Description

T 0 all whom, it may concern I v HENRY J. GAISM'AN, or NEW YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOB. ToAuro s'mor COMPANY, or
- NEW YORK, N. Y., A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK RAZOR-STROP scunrnn AND sU'RrAoER.
Be it known that I, HENRY J. GAIsMAN,
a citizen of'the, United States, and resident. of New York city, borough of Manhattan,
in the county .of New York and State'of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Razor- Strop Scrapers and Surfacers, of which the following is a specification. v
The object of my invention-is to provide a simple,- cheap and eflicientdevice adapted A to scrape the surface of razor strops and the like, and to smooth and re-surface thestrop, and particularly the scraped portion thereof, whereby accumulation offsurface dressing, grit, or the like upon the strop may be i 1 readily removed and the surface readily re- My inventioncomprises a rod or the like provided with a soft metal strop'finishing body, and a scraping edge of harder mate rial projecting beyond the-surface of such soft metal, adapted, when manipulated, to scrape the surface of the leather, upon which surface the soft "metal is then rubbed to smooth suchsurface and apply a dressing strop dressing device in position for use Fig, 2 is a'section on the line 2, 2, in Fig. 1;
' Fig. 3 is a sect-ion on the line 3, 3, in Fig. 1;
F 1g, 4 is a section on the line 4, 4, in Fig. l The numeral 1 indicates a rod or bar of suitable material, such as brass or steel, upon which is secured a body or covering 2 of soft metal, such as lead, and at 8 is a scraper which may be of suitable relativelyphard;
metal, such as brass or steel, and whichis secured to rod 1. In the example illus trated, the rod 1 is provided with a'longitudinal recess 1 in one side, in which scraper strip 3 is secured, as by forcing strip 3 into such' recess, and'the soft metal body 2 is shown in the form of a tube that receives rod 1, and is provided-with a longitudinal slot 2 in line with the recess '1, and through which the strip 3is passed,fwhereby the body or tube 2 is kept from rotating on rod 1.
- lhe scraper strip 3 projects beyond the-surface of body or tube 2 in position to engage the surface of a piece of leather for scraping the latter, leaving the surface of body or 7 Specification of Letterslatent. Application'filed August 17,1912.- Serial No. 715,5 2.

tube 2 free to be rubbed upon the strop or ter." To protect the parts 2, 3, when not in concealed, except that the outer end of rod 1 is left exposed to permit pulling the same To retain the parts 1, 2, 3, in operating position whenpulled outwardly, as in Fig. 2, I have shown theendj 4 of tubular handle 4 as tapered outwardly,
and the scraper device is provided with a head or enlargement 5 at its inner end, the
surface of which is outwardly tapered to correspond with and lit snugly within the tapered end 4? of the handle, whereby, when the parts 1, 2, 3, are pulled outwardly and the enlargement 5 is caused to fit snugly in the tapered end 43 of the handle, the scraper strip 3 and finishing body 2 can be securely held projecting from the handle, and may be readily pushed inwardly.
At the end of handle 41 provide means to closely engage the surface of body or tube 2 and scraper strip 3, as the latter are pushed in and pulled out ofthehandle, for the pur-- pose of clearing the former from anyaecumulations of scrapings from the strop. To this end I have .shown the end of "handle 4 as bent inwardly at 4", in the form of a flange or washer, to closely engage the for the passage of scraper strip 3, the part 1 .thus serving to .scrape or dislodge from body or tube2 and strip ,3 any accumulations thereon when they are pushed into the A hole 4 at the lower end of-the.
5.5 leather for smoothing and' dressingdhe lathandle permits air to flow in and out of the handle when the scraper device is reciprocated therein.
By means of my improvements the finishing body or tube 2 and tlle scraper strip 3 may be concealed within'the handle 4 when not in use, providing a convenient device to be carried in a shaving set, hand bag or the like, and whendt is desired to scrape and. re+ surface the strop the partsil, 2, 3, are pulled out from the handle, as shown in Fig. 2,
the scraper strip 3 is then drawn along the surface' of the stropto-"scrape accumulations therefrom, and then the device is partly ro 'tated, the soft metalfinishing. body or tube 2 is drawn or rubbed along the surface of the strop to smooth the latter and apply 85" body or tube 2, and provided with a' slot 4 rubbed uponthe strop tiveiy -hardfscraping strip entefin'g said tilbe" comprising a rod, a soft rheta1 tube,s urside, and a scraping passing through tube and secu're'd/in said rod; a portion of said scraping,strip projiecting beyond the Having nowvdesc'ribed' iny invention-jwhat j I 'c 1aim1is:#
