APPLIGATION FILED MAY 2B, 1912.
Patented May 20, 1913 2 SHEETS-SHEET 24 WILLIAM R. GREENFIELD, OF VERONA, NEW JERSEY, SSIGNOR TO VAN ORDEN 00E- SET COMPANY, 0F NEWARK, NEW JERSEY, A CORPORATION OF NEV JERSEY.
CORSET.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 28, 1912. Serial No. 700,270.
T0 all whom t may concern.:
Be it known that I, WILLIAM R. Griman-` the following is a specification, like characters in the drawing and specification designating like parts.
This invention relates to garments, and
-hasfor its primary object tlc provision of a corset capable of performing the functions of an abdominal rbelt or surgical band,
and at thesaine time presenting outwardly an appearance essentially equal to the highest grade of dress corset, my novel corset being particularlY adaptable to reduction of the iigures o persons tending temporarily or permanently to vcorpulence, although I contemplate the use of. my iinprovemcnts in any field for which they are adapted by their nature.
Accordingly, among other important objects of my invention', is the combination with an outer corset member proper of an abdominal member within the corset and secured thereto at the rear in an upright region of attachment extending from a point -well below the waist line to a point above the waist line, the belt encompassing the hips and extending forward around the abdomen, the upper margin of the belt sweeping upward .in a gentle curve to the upper point of attachment at the back above the waist line' so that reciprocal support is afforded by theback and abdomen to each other, the back being braced Iat the point `where forward pressure is most effective to encourage au erect figure, while the abdomen receives an uplift that is positive and derived fiom 'the region best able to support it, instead of from Lthe waist line, where a forward drag usually occurs and is the source of undue fatigue, the waist being the region least qualiied to resist such a drag.
By causing the abdominal vmember to encompass the hips completely, the abdominal belt is anchored at its lower margin, and the resultant `of this circumferential force in cooperation with the diagonal. rearward and upward draft toward the back, is -an inward and upward support uplifting the medial portion of the abdomen, which can not sag beneath the lower margin of the belt' as the latter is constrained by the hips and held down in the manner already described.
Thevarious features of my invention will be illustrated and described fully in the aecompa'nying drawings and specification and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawings, Figure l is an insideielevatioi'i of a corset in the construction of which my invention has been embodied, part of one side being broken away to permit illustration on a larger scale. Figs. 2 and 3 are respectively views in perspective of the corset of Fig. 1 applied to the figure of a wearer, F ig. 2 showing the corset partly in place while Fig. 3 shows the. corset as it appears in ordinary wear.
In the embodiment of my invention selected for illustration and description to enable ready and' complete understanding of my improvements, the partlesignated by the reference numeral l is the corset proper,
which may be of any suitable material and contour, being shown in the instance illustrated as of well-known shape, comprising the usual wings laced at the back, as designated by the reference numeral if, and having suitable reinforcements or stays as at 3.
In accordance with my invention, anabdominal belt 4l is provided, of any suitable shape and material, and which extends at the rear from a point 5, well above the waist-line, to a point 6, below the waist line, and preferably near the lower margin of the corset proper, the lower portion of the belt preferably encompassing the hips, as at 7, on cach side, so that the belt is drawn snugly across beneath the abdomen at its front retouren tray so, reis.
lower region and .is thus prevented from below, and the back above, the waist line, y
as already set fort-h. Thus, the weight of the abdomen is' utilized to draw forward the back below the shoulders and this tends to throw the chest forward and encourages 'and assists the wearer to maintain an erect poise, with the shoulders back, all of which aids breatl'iing and a healthful relative position of the organs.
Having illustrated and described my invent-ion thus fully, and suitable means by which it may be put into practice, I wish it understood that I do not limit myself to the specific construction and materials selected for illustration and description by way of example, nor in' general do I limit myself otherwise than as set forth in' the claim read in connection with this specification. y
What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
A corset comprising an outer corset member and an inner abdominal belt member consisting solely of two opposed sections each secured rigidly inside the rear of said corset member by stitching extending from a region near the lower margin upward abpve the waist line to a point substantially adjacent the top of the corset, said'belt members embracing the hips and extending down under the lower front extremity of the abdomen,` being smaller in circumference than the corset member at the top of belt line and graduating or growing still smaller comparatively relatively to said corset member, from this point to bottom of belt, thereby giving uplift support to abdomen and tending to throw the chest of the wearer for ward by pressure above the waist line at the rear. v i
