STERLING vtr. SMITH AND ALBERT w. SMITH, or BERKELEY, oaLIroanni,v
MOUNTING IoIrWALL-BEDS AND THE LIKE.
. To all whom it may concern:
Be it'known that we, STERLING W. SMITH and ALBERT .V. SMrrI-i, both citizens of the:
United States, residing at Berkeley, in the county of Alameda and State ot California,
have invented vnew and usefull improvements in idountiirgs for ATall-Beds and the Like,
` of which the following is a specitication. i
AOur invention relates to a means for mounting furniture and the like so that its position may be changed from point to l point; and it is especially designed for use `in connection-with wall beds which when folded to stand. verticallymay occupy'one position, and when they are to be unfolded and placedv in a horizontal position for use,
.. may occupy. another position.' ,Y
It comprises ai means for mounting such. structures and. details of construction whrch will be more fully explained by reference to the accompanying drawings, in' which-f'y Figurel is a plan view of our inventionshowingfabed structure'in one position.
Fig. 2 shoWs it advanced to a second position, and`fintermediate position lowered for use.
In the present construction we have shownp our inventionas applied v to what is termed 1- a f wallbed, in ywhich ,the hed ,may occupy y p, horizontal position' for use, and stand vervtically"when not inl use.
beds' are adapted'to be placed in' .af recess whenjnot in use and to he advanced from said recess into the -ro'oin when they are to l with sockets 3,
be let downtor'occupancy, but' it willv he '.-understood'-that thefhed may he mountedv `and movable as hereinafter"described, with-y out special' reference te a' recess.
i ,As shown in the drawings, A is a hase upon which the hed vtrame. 2 is supported,
'This hase rmay be if-anysuitable description and may be permanently attached to -the head portionafot' the bed. It provided which aieA located.toward the ends'oitthe base so that-there willbe a considerable space lbetween the said sockets.
'are tui-.liable in the sockets 3. .The -lower 4 are crank arms, the upper ends ot which ends .have downwardly project-ing crank pins as 5, which are turnab'le in fixed sockets.
6. 'When the lbed stands on endv or in its vertical' position, it will befseen 'that it is supported upon the .crank arms, and that by ,v Specicaton off Letters Patent J Preferably, liuch- Patented May so, 191s.

reason of these arms being freely turnable, the hed may he moved within certain limits,
by manipulating it about these crank arms.
lVhen such va bed is to be concealed in a recess when not in use, su'ch recess may he represented as at 7 in Figs. 1 and 2, and it is provided with a door opening 8,' of less width than the width of the bed structure. As at present illustrated, thewall 9 of 'the recess extends to a point. which leaves the proper opening 8, and a slidable door l0 may be employed to close this opening when the hed is within the recess. Therelative position of the crank arm sockets 3 in the base,
is Well shown inlligs. l and 2.
Wheny it is desired to remove the bed from the recess, the door 10 having been opened, it is only necessary to take hold of theedge of the structureand pull it forward. The action of the crank arms is well shownin Figs. l and 2, inwhich the movement'otl -the arm l swinging in a circlea`nd'the s imultaneous movement of the arm 4a which supports the other end of the hase, allows lthe left endfof 'the struct-ure to move forward in an are of a circle'.4 The rst portion of this movementcauses the opposite or right end of the structure to move backward slightly, then the lettend commences to' advance through the opening, While the crank-f1a carries the right end backward in the position shown at B, Fig. 2; the crank a meantime having advanced the structure so Jthat it is entirely clear of the left edge of the door opening, and the two cranks then` operating together, will advance thestructure edgewise, until it is clear of the dooropening.` The continued movementoi the crank varms' then carries the right edge;
of the struct-urenearer. to the wall, while,
ingr` and the structure may stand substan-v tially parallel with itsformer position ,witlif inthe recess. It Willi. also be seen that it is susceptible of standingat an angle with the recess, if found desirable.Y The movement 'theleft'eclge swings outclear of the open.
"of theA hed or struct-ure" thus takes `placer without any turning or yreversal movement;
it being advanced to either positionivithoutv change of front. T I
Iii order to more firmly support the head les end of thestructurcwhen "it, is lowered for use, wehave shown lugsor feet' projecting` from :the bed frame near tothe base vwhich carriesit, and these feet are so constructed that when the-bed is lowered into position they may rest upon the floor and form a direct support for the edge of the base, so that any weight laced upon the bed will have a support independent of that afforded by the crank arms, thus `making the structure exceedingly solid.
`Having thus described our invention, what we claim anddesire to secure by Letters Patent is l. In a structure such as described, a supporting base movable in a horizontal plane,
and hor1zontally-movable crank arms on which the base 1s mounted journaled on fixed axes spaced apart, and each movable from an angular position on one side to an angular position on the other, ofa straight :line intersecting both said fixed axes,
whereby the base may 4be moved endwise Athrough a narrow opening and positioned parallel with the said opening on either side of the same. y A
2. In a structure combination with a able in a horizontal plane, of crankl arms on the free ends of whlch the base is mountsuch as described, the
supporting base moved, said crank arms being journaled on fixed axes spaced apart and each movable in an arc intersecting a straight line between. the said fixed axes, whereby the base may be moved endwise through a narrow opening and positioned parallel with the fixed axes on opposite sides of the same.
3. A mounting for furniture embodying a horizontally movable base, horizontally movable swinging arms journaled on vertical axes spaced apart and each at its outer end having pivotal connection with the base for guiding the movements of the base, said arms being both movable inV arcs each eX- tending on both sides of a straight line intersecting the axes of the arms.
In testimony whereof we have hereunto set our hands in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
