Description

HINGIL.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 22, 1912.
Patented May 13, 1913.
J. T. LAPAGEK.
UNTT @TATES PATENT OFFICE.
' JOSEPH T. LAPACEK, OF SCHUYLER, NEBRASKA.
HINGE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J osnrn T. LAPACEK, a citizen of the United States, residing at Schuyler, in the county of Colfax, State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hinges; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to hinges.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of a hinge which is so constructed and arranged that a door supported thereby may be adjusted vertically with respect to the door frame and swung in different horizontal planes so as to enable the door to clear any permanent or temporary obstructions that may be disposed in the path of travel of the lower portion of the door during the swinging of the latter to open or closed position.
With the above and other objects in View, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully described and particularly pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters of reference denote cor-responding parts in the several views, and in which Figure 1 is a front elevation of adoor frame having a door hung therein through the medium of the improved hinge, said door being shown in its lowermost position with respect to the frame, Fig. 2, a fragment of what is shown in Fig. 1 with the door adjusted upwardly with respect to the frame and partially open, Fig. 3, a section on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1, Fig. 4, a section on the line 4:4: of Fig. 2, Fig. 5, a detail perspective View of the hinge, and Fig. 6, a detail perspective view of the link which connects the door to the movable element of the hinge.
Referring to the drawings A indicates a door frame of any desired construction, and B a door mounted therein through the me- Specification of Letters Patent.

dium of the improved hinges C. Each of the hinges C is shown as comprising the usual cooperating leaves 10 and 11, the former of which is adapted to be secured fast to the frame A while the latter is connected to the door B through the medium of a link plate D one end of which latter is pivotally connected to the free end of the leaf 11 while the other end thereof is pivotally connected to the door B. The edge of the link D corresponding with the upper edge of the leaf 11 when the door is in the position shown in Fig. 1 is bent U-shaped as at 12. This U- shaped portion of the link D is adapted to receive the upper edge of the leaf 11 when the door B is in its lowermost position, the engagement of the upper edge of the leaf 1.1 with the bight of the U-shaped portion 12 serving to limit the downward movement of the door. It will also be noted that the pivotal connection between the leaf 11 and the link D is a short distance inward of the adjacent end of said leaf and link so that the upward movement of the door B relative to the frame A will bring the outer end of the leaf 11 into engagement with the bight of the U-shaped portion 12 of the link and limit the upward movement of the door.
From the foregoing it will be apparent that the door B can be adjusted vertically within predetermined limits and swung to open position at any of said adjustments.
\Vhat is claimed is:
1. A hinge comprising a pair of cooperating leaves one of which is provided with means for rigidly securing same to a door frame, and a link having one end pivotally connected to the free end of the other leaf and its other end provided with means for pivotal connection to a door, whereby the latter may be adjusted in a plane at right angles to the plane of movement of said last named leaf.
2. A hinge comprising a pair of cooperating leaves, one of which is provided with means for rigidly securing same to door frame. a link pivotally secured to the free end of the other leaf, and means for limiting the pivotal movement of said link in either direction.
3. A hinge comprising an attaching leaf, a In testimony whereof, I affix my signature, second leaf pivoted to the first leaf fancl a in presence of two Witnesses. third leaf W1ich is an attaching lea pivotecl to the second leaf and movable With JOSEPH LAPACEK' 5 respect thereto in a plane at an angle to the YVitnesses:
