The'feed rolls are c i t' off from the platen by depressing a finger-piece 39 spivotec at 40 to one end of the platen frame, to swing an arm 40 connected by a link-41, with the cranked endtfl of a roll- .eontrollingcam shaft-12. Said cam shaft b'y-its engagement with arms 43 connected 0 to the. :feed .roll hangers 6", 7", operates to cast the feed rollsfrom the platen (Figs. 3 and 5) in which position they remain until the .cam shaft is rotated tmepable the feed-y rolls to be restored to the platen (Fig. 4). '10 5 -A paper-adjusting tablet or plate 12 extends across the platen frame, above the. platen, and is supported on the platen frame en 5 3.-
Patented May 13, 1,913.
Sheet-positioning or alining' pins 14 1 1 (whose outer fe'hdsfnormally lie flush with or below the face of the, tablet 12), are pros I jected above the tablet through apertures therein, the perforated'work sheets f being set orhung on said pinstodetermine'the -l04 cationof the first line of printing. To. protrude the pins, a finger iece on a hollow shaft 16 (turningon r0 4) 'is depressed'to rock the shaft and cause the engagement of cams-18 (Fig. 9) on said'. shaft with the pins 14 to thrust the pins outwardly, into opera.- tiveposition', said pins being held in ."such positions by dwell= portions 24 on the cams,
which dwells -may rest against the ends of the-pins (see Figs; 1, 3 and 9) when the 'finger-piec'e15 has reached one end-of its swing, whereby to mechanically hold the pins projected and therefore permit the use,
of both hands of the operator in positioning the sheets. Thepins are returned by springs 21' (which operate as soon as the cams have been returned suflicienily to remove the dwell portions 24 from engagement with the pins),
' the outer ends of thesprings bearing against rests 22, and their inner ends against shoulders 23 on the pins. 3
. The pins 14 slide back and .forth int-ubug lar bearings; .13 registering with the apertures in the tablet 12, and having extensions 17, (Figs. 1 and 2) supported by the rock I shaft 16, upon which said extensions'loosely fit.- These bearingmby connecting the tablet 12', intermediate its ends, with the rock shait I 16 and tie rod 4, prevent springing of the'tablet. --Said extensions :17 are cut a-wa as in Figs. 1 and 2, to clear the cams 18 securedon the shaft 16 by set screws 19), which work slits-2O in the bearings 13, to engage and push'forward the alining pins 14.
Feed rolls2d, running, upon the front ofthe platen above the printing line, 'are carshaft; and may be held where adjusted by friction springs The rolls 25 are preferably offset from the "arms 26 toward each other so as to lie upon the side edges ofwork sheets confined between'the arms 26, andare pressed against the-platen by aspring 34 coiled about the rock shaft 28, and having one end secured to the shaft as at 34*}, (Fig:
, plate 12.
1,) the opposite end 34". resting against The rolls areireleased by the 18,
. which, in tl1e ?1ct/o f protruding the alining pins '14, engage rings" 35 "looselysliding on the bosses 13, and formed on. the ends oflinks 36 pivotedat 37 'to cranks 38 *fast on the rock shaft 28. The cams-- 18 force the links to'ro'ck the shaft28 and -"swing the :zrms-26'and the rolls, away fromth'e' platen Fig. 3).
The dwell portions 24of the camshold the pins protruded and the'front rolls released; .Spring 34' returns, the rolls and slides to normal positions.
The bottom rolls, 6 and? (running 'on the side of, the platen where the main work sheets are introduced) may be"independently;-
. 'duced into the machine; and to enable .the
cast ofl? When. a pileof'sheetsisbelng'intros alining mechanism to return'the bottom feed? rolls to normal" position in case the operator should forgettodo so, as well as to-red'uce' the number of operations necessary to return the parts to operative position, Ipr'ovide the rock shaft 16 with a. cam' 46 (Fig. 10), to engage a tappet- 47 on an-arm 49- extending.
rearwardly .from the link 41 of the bottom feed roll mechanism. The link 41 is drawn upwardly by the finger piece 39, to cast eii the bottom feed rolls from'thefplaten; and the ar'm49 is moved to such positionthat the tappet 47 will be engaged and'depressed by the cam-46 when the rock shaft-16 is returned to normalposition. .Thecam (Fig: 3), causes the tappet and; the arm 49 to return the cam shaft '42 to normal position I (Fig. 4),,to restore the bottom feed-rolls to the platen, the finger-piece 39' also returning to normal position. The tappet 47: is pivot ed, at-'48 on the arm 49, so as to yield to the cam'49 in case thebottom feed rolls'are' cast off prior to protruding the alining pins, as in Fig-10; a spring 50-operating to return the tappet to normal position. A stop 52 is engaged by a tail 51 von the tappet.
Variations may be resorted to within the scope of the invention, and portions of the improvements may be used without others.
