ADVERTISING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 13, 1913.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, COLONEL N. FALK, a citizen of the United States, residing at San Jose, in the county of Santa Clara, State of California, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Advertising Devices; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this application.
This invention relates to improvements in advertising' devices, the object of the invention being to produce an advertising device by means of which a person desiring to obtain descriptive literature of any character may do so by signing his name and address upon a slip, whereupon, by the operation of a handle the machine will automatically cut olf such name and address and deposit the same in a receptacle and thereupon the machine will automatically deliver to the person so writing his name and address the descriptive literature desired. In this way, the person, lirm or corporation which might be doing the advertising will have at all times a list of the persons who are interested in the matter advertised, and at the same time, only such persons as are interested will take the trouble of obtaining the literature which will save a large amount of waste and loss which would be occasioned by the indiscriminate distribution of the advertising literature.
A further object of the invention is to produce a simple and inexpensive device and yet one which will be exceedingly effective for the purposes for which it is designed.
These objects, I accomplish by means of such structure and relative arrangement of parts as will fully appear by a perusal of the following' specification and claims.
In the drawings similar characters of reference indicate corresponding parts in the several views.
Figure 1 is a front elevation of the complete device. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a. sectional View taken on a line X-X of Fig. 2. Fig. 4.- is a sectional view taken on a line Y-Y of Fig. 1.
Referring now more particularly to the characters of reference on the drawings, the numeral 1 designates a vertical case communicating with a horizontal case 2, such 4case being supplied with any desired kind of ornamental decoration such as plate glass, mirrors or any other decorative matter which will be found attractive or desirable, and with any suitable doors or openings. Projecting into the case 2 is a drawer' 3 adapted to be suitably locked in position and being' provided with handles 4.V
The top of the case 2 is provided with two slots 5 and 6 disposed underneath which are blocks or plates 7 and 8 respectively mounted on rods 9 and 10 respectively, journaled at 11 and 12 respectively on the sides of the casing 2, which journaled construction permits the members 7 and 8 to have a downward movement when any pressure is brought to bear against them such as a person writing a name and address in a manner as will hereinafter appear. Each of the members 9 and 10 will be provided with a suitable spring member 13 and 14 respectively in order to hold the members 7 and 8 normally in position against the slots 5 and 6. Disposed to the rear of the case 2 and in the case l is a suitable paper roll 15 carrying paper 16 which projects over the members 7 and 8 and around a roller 17 .mounted on a shaft 18 journaled in the end `of said casing 2.
Interposed within the casing 2 between 'the members 7 and 8 is a sliding bar 19 Islldable in guides 20 and 21 and having a pulling spring 22 connected at one end thereof. The member 19 is held completely within the member 21 under normal conditions by means of a dog 23 on the member 7 which engages a notch 2-/1 in the side of `said member 19. Now when a person signs his name on the paper 16 stretched over the member 7 it moves said member 7 downwardly which projects the dog 23 into a slot 25 along the edge of the member 19 and then the spring 22 pulls said member 19 along until it is brought to a stop by means `of a dog 2G on the member 8 engaging the notch 27 on the member 19 which then holds the member 19 stationary until the person `writes his address on the paper over the member 8 which will then move said memiber 8 downwardly moving the dog 26 into Ja slot 28 on the other side of the member 19 4opposite the slot 25 and then the spring 22 will pull the member 19 completely into the member 20.
' Vhen the member 19 is in the member 21, then a lug 29 on said member 19 will act as a stop for a dog 30 on a rod 31 which will prevent such rod 31 from being operated; but when the member 19 is pulled completely into the member 20 it will move the lug 29 out of the path of the dog 30 and then the following operation may take place to-wit: A handle member 32 is secured to the member 31 and projects above the casing 2 as shown in Figs. l, 2 and 3. Such member 31 is secured as a part of a chain 33 which projects around a sprocket wheel 34 on the shaft 18 and thence under two idlers 35 and 36, thence around a sprocket wheel 37 on a shaft 38 journaled within the case 1. On the member 31 is a sloping cam 39 and when t-he handle 32 is operated to move the member 31 downwardly this cam 39 engages' a roller 40 on t-he member 19 which pulls such member 19 back into the member 21 and then the springs 13 and 14 press their respective members 7 and 8 back into their upper position causing the dogs 23 and '26 to engage the notches 24 and 27 respectively which then hold the member 19 in its position in the member 21. The downward movement of the member 31 also causes the chain 33 to operate the gear 34 which turns the shaft 18 and the roller 17 which turns the paper 16 around said roller and off from the roll 15 and such paper is then cut by means ofsthe following structure and operation to-wit: Then the member 19 is moved into the member 20 it causes a lever 41 to move on its fulcrumed point 42 and such lever 41 is connected by a link 43 with a movable blade 44 hinged at 45 and causes such blade to move down across a fixed blade 46 which will cut the paper projecting between such blades. Then, when the member 19 is moved back into the member 21 this operation is reversed and the blade 44 is opened away from the blade 46 and hence when the paper 16 is moved by the operatio-n described it will be pressed between said blades 44 and 46 ready to be again cut off with the next operation. Vith this signing and cutting operation is also combined a literature delivery mechanism. conn structed and operated substantially as follows: Disposed within the case 1 are one or more pairs of shafts 47 and 48 carrying pulleys 49 mounted on which are belts 50 across which may be piled the descriptive litera* ture the same being held in vertical position by a back stop 51, and the end of the pile of such literature being at all times held in frictional contact against vertical walls 52 by means of tension springs 53 disposed on one of the shafts 47. The shaft 38 is provided with a gear 54 engaging a gear rack on a frame 55 adapted to move vertically between the members 52 and provided with projecting arms 56 adapted to move between the belts 50 and just without the sides of the members 52 to engage the descriptive literature and to raise and lower the same in the following manner namely, when the member 32 is operated as described and moves the chain 33 this will move the sprocket 37 which will turn the shaft 38 and the gear 54 and move the frame 55 upwardly which will cause the arms 56 to engage one member of the descriptive literature and move it upward to a position opposite a slot 57 in the front of the case 1. The same will then be dischargedl through such slot in the eration of the same as follows to-wit: A belt 58 is driven by the shaft 38 and drives a shaft 59 which drives a belt 60 driving another shaft- 61 which drives another belt 62 moving its other end over a shaft 63. On the under side of the belt 62 is a lug 64 which before the machine is operated normally projects at t-he rear of the case 1 but with the operation of the machine, the lug travels forward and engages the literature and forces it out through t-he slot 57.
The handle member 32 must always be pulled down until the member 31 strikes and rings a bell 31a, which indicates the operation of the machine. Y
hen the above operations have taken place, the handle 32 is released; then a ten sion spring 65 operating against the shaft 38 reverses all the above described movements which returns all the parts to their normal position and leaves the machine ready for operation again. The tension of such spring 65 is of course made when the parts are moved by the operation of the member 32. The tension of the springs 53 s also maintained by moving the backstops 51 backwardly for the purpose of inserting the advertising literature between the same and the members 52. On the shaft 18 within the gear 44 is a ratchet wheel 66 having a suitable dog 67 to prevent such shaft 18 and its coperating parts from moving in the wrong direction when the parts are reversed which would loosen the.
From the foregoing description it will'be readily seen that I have produced such a device as substantially fulfils the object of the invention as set forth herein.
vWhile this specification sets forth in detail the present and preferred construction of the device, still in practice such deviations from such detail may be resorted to as do not form a departure from the spirit of the invention,
Having thus described my invention what I claim as new and useful and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
l. A device ofthe character described com- ,following manner by the structure and opprising a case, a spring pulled member disposed in said case, such member being adapted to move longitudinally in said case, a vertically moving member held normally in engagement with said longitudinally movable member', means for disengaging said vertically movable member from said longitudinally movable member', a paper strip adapted to project over said vertically movable member and means connected with said longitudinally movable member and adapted to cut said paper strip when said longitudinally movable member moves, as described.
2. A device of the character described com prising the combination with a case having slots, of members movable vertically beneath said slots, another .member movable longitudinally between said vertically moving members, means for holding said longitudinally moving member stationary When said vertical members are stationary, means for moving said longitudinal member when said vertically moving members are moved, a paper disposed over said vertical moving members and means operatively connected with said longitudinally moving member whereby with the movement of said last named member said paper will be moved and cut, as described.
3. A device of the character described comprising a case, a spring pressed carrier movable Within said case, a stationary member in said ease at the end of said carrier, a vertically moving member in said case adapted to move along said stationary member, a transversely moving member in said case movable across said case just above the path of said vertically moving members, said case being provided with a slot disposed in alinement with the path of said transversely moving member, as described.
Ll. A device of the character described comprising the combination with a vertically movable and a longitudinally movable member controlled thereby, of a merehandise delivering mechanism and means opera tively connected between said longitudinally movable member and said merchandise delivering mechanism whereby when said longitudinally movable member moves said merchandise delivering mechanism may be operated and when said longitudinally Inovable member is in normal position said merchandise delivering mechanism is locked against operation, as described.
In testimony whereofl I allix my signature in presence ot' two witnesses.
