F DES MOINES, IOWA.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 698,702, dated April 29, 1902.
Application filed October 5,1900.
To all whom it may concern: I 7
Be it known that I, ANNA 0.1 GUERNSEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Des Moines, in the county of Polk and State of. Iowa, have invented a new and useful Automatic Advertising and Selling Machine, of which the following-is a specification.
My object is to providea coin-controlledmachine adapted for discharging and dealing out to customers pieces, packages, or parcels of merchandise in succession from a chamber within as the price of the article in the form of a coin is dropped in a slot and pressed by a pin in such a manner that the same pressure upon the coin will at the same time by means of a compound lever actuate mechanism for displaying an advertisement of the merchandise immediately in front of the eyes of the operator.
My invention consists in the construction, arrangement, and combination of parts, as hereinafter set forth, pointed out in my claims, and illustrated in'the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure l is a vertical centralsectional view showing the forms and relative positions of the different operative parts. "Fig. 2 is a rear view of the machine from which the back is removed from the case to disclose'the mechanism. Fig. 3'is an enlarged detail view of the card-holder and carrier that is located in the top portion of the case to cooperate with the discharges articles of merchandise. Fig. at is a side view of a coin-carrying frame provided with coinciding slots in its top and an open space for receiving a coin when the frame'is' ated pin is mounted and the pin in position for engaging a coin.) r
The letters A and A designate the side walls of a wooden case that may vary in dimensions to suit the sizes of articles of merchandise that are to be inclosed therein to be successively discharged therefrom.
A is a back hinged to one of the parallel sides. The sides .are extended laterally at theirlower end portions, and A is a fixed front on the edges of the parallel extensions, and A a fixed top on the same extensions.
13 is a fixed front that extends from the Serial No. 82,102- (No model.
Ifixed top A to the top of the parallel sides A and A B is a windowin the top portion of the front, vthrough whiclradvertisements on a card-carrier'will be visible.
B is a rotatable card-carrier journaled to the parallel sides of the case to be simultaneously operated with the mechanism for automatically delivering merchandise from a chamber in the case by pressure upon a coin dropped through a slot in the case.
0 is the wall of, a pocket or chamber, preferably made of sheet metal, fixed to the inside of the fixed front 13 and adapted in size to the pieces or packages of merchandise that are to be placed therein and upon each other, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. l.
O is a movable'section of thef'front B, by means of which access is gained to the chamber as required for piling up articles in the chamber.
O is a window in the lower portion of the movable section 0 A sliding bottom at for the chamber is fitted in bearings d, fixed to the wall 0 of the chamber,'and upon the top of a block (1, that is fixed to the parallel side walls A and A 01 is a lever pivotally connected with the bottom of the case and connecte'datits top with the sliding bottom 61 by means of links 61. A frame f,'having coinciding slot-s f in the parallel sides of its top to admit a coin, is also pivotally connected with the bottom of the case, and an escutcheon f is fixed in an opening in the top A to coincide with the slot f at the top of the frame and has an integral downward extension that is provided with aslot that coincides with the open slots in, the tops of the parallel sides of'theframe f when it is in its normal position, as shown in Fig. 1, and in such a manner that when acoin corresponding in diameter with the width of the slot is dropped through the escutcheon it will enter the slot in the frame to be supported and carried by the frame. The frame f is connected with the lever d by links g, that have branches g, adapted to engage the parallel sides of the pivoted frame f in such a manner that when the frame is pressed inward the branches will aid in transmitting power from the frame to the lever 01" as required to thereby actuate the sliding bottom d. Contractile coiled springs 9 return the lever d and the framefto their normal positions when force applied to the framefis relaxed.
h is a spring-actuated pin mounted in the front A in such a manner that its inner end can engage a coin in the slot and by pressure against the coin force the frame f and the lever 01" rearward and at the same time store power in the springs g, that will return the frame and lever to their former positions when pressure upon the pin is removed.
72, is a pawl pivotally connected with the under side of the top A in such amanner that it will extend down between the parallel sides f of the frame and swing inward to allow a coin to pass to the rear of it; but in the re-l verse motion of the frame it will engage the coin and prevent the coin from remaining in the top of the frame when the frame resumes its normal position.
J is a lever pivoted to one of the parallel sides of the case and connected at its lower end with the lever 61 by means of alink J The levers J, d, and f are thus combined with the slidable bottom (Z, the spring-actuated pin it, and the card-carrier B in such a manner as to produce a compound lever for simultaneously operating the slidable bottom and the rotatable card-carrier advantageously by pressing the pin upon a coin supported in the top of the lever f. It is therefore obvious that a force suificient for actuating the slidable bottom will also be sufficient for operating the card-carrier at the same instant the slidable bottom is actuated.
K is a ratchet-wheel on the axle of the ro tatable card-carrier B and m is a pawl connected with the lever J to engage the ratchetwheel in such a manner that when the lever is vibrated by pressure upon a coin in the opening in the top of the pivoted framefit will impart motion to the ratchet-wheel as required to rotate the card carrier a fraction of a revolution. A detent in the form of aspring r, carrying a roller 8 at its top, is fixed to the inside of the case to press the roller against the ratchet-Wheel K as required to retain the 'card-carrier normally stationary.
Catch devices on the ends of the card-carrier are adapted to retain cards on the faces of the roller, as indicated by dotted lines in Fig. 1, in such a manner that a card or any vother form of advertisement on the carrier will be brought into parallel position with the window B every time the pin it is pressed to engage a coin in the frame fas required to discharge an article of merchandise from the opening in its front that is traversed by the sliding bottom (2 under the cover 3, fixed to the front B and over said opening. By thus combining automatic mechanism for delivering merchandise and a rotatable card-carrier for advertising the merchandise and jointly operating all the movable parts simultaneously by pressure of a pin upon a coin dropped through a slot into the machine the machine performs a double service for the owner and the customers who patronize the owner by operating the, machine. J Y
