Description
ani-aerei t lLetters .Patent N. :106,156, dated August 9, 1870.
IMPROVEMENT IN FARM-GATES.
\ The Schedule referredto in these Letters Patent and making part of tho same.
. To alli/whom it may concern;
Y Be itknown that I, AMAsA HATHAWAY, of Prarie du sae, inthe county of Sauk and State ot' Wisconsin,
have invented a newr and useful Improvement in l Farm-Gates; and `I do herebydeclare thatthe following is a full, clear, andvexact description thereof,
which will enable others skilled in the art to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of' this specification.
My invention relates tothat'class of gates for farm and .othernse which are suspended from hinged or pivoted` bea-ms, zthcjjatter;.bcing'so arranged as to be tilted to operate tliel` gate; and 4 lMy improvement `consists" in "the construction and arrangement of "parts`,` as hereinafter set f'orth.v
In the accompanying drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation;
Figure 2 is a top view;i"and Figure is an end v`iew.` I Similar lettersof `reference indicate corresponding parts. i Y. I
A and represent the gate-posts, each of which consist of two'uprightstied together in any suitable t manner, and supported in `any suitable manner in or on `the ground.
O is a beam, which'is pivoted to the post B 'at the point D.Y v y E represents the gate, which `is suspended fromthe bar O by means of the rods E F, which are attached to the carriage G, the truckwbeels of which reston and traverse the top of the beam C onra suitable track.
When the bea-m G is 4inclined'sufficiently, the gate f will, by its own` gravity, more back and rnn down on the inclined vplane formed by the position of the beam, thus opening the gate. Itis closed by 'incline -ing the beam in the opposite'dircction.
The beam is operated byl means ofthe bar H, which is pivoted to the post A at lright angles with the beam and gate, as seeninlg. 3;
l The tbrward end of theheam extends through between the uprights, forming the post A, and to it is attached` the .rod I, which hangs down and is allowed' to.play` np and downfreelythrough the guide J.
K is a rod which is pivoted to the rod 'I at Land to the har H at M; l Y The bar H being pivoted` at the point N to the post A, it will beseen that when the ends of this bar are raised and lowered, the forward end of the beam C will, by means of the rods I and K, be raised and f lowered also, and in this manner the beam O is made toform an inclined plane for opening and closing the gate.
0 0` represent hanging rods at the ends of the bar H, to take hold of' in riding through for operating .the
, bar.
, P l Arepresent brace-rods for supporting the beam from 'the stud R.
S S are brace-rods extending from the top of the `post BV to the barH. f
T is the casing or box resting on the ground, into which the bottom part of the-gate passes when it is opened, and which acts as a guide and protection t0 it'. r
r.It will thus be seen that by simply operating the bar H,.by means of the hangingrods O O, the gate is opened and closed. y
When4 closed it vis self-fastened by means ofthe hook U, which catches over a cross-piece, V, in the post A. Thefact of opening necessarily unfastens it.
X X are'two'guide-'wbeels supported on vstands at the foot ofthe postB, for keeping the bottom ofthe gate in place and preventing friction against the post and casing T.
The rollers of the carriage G are groove'd and run' on the edge ofa plate, Y, which is 'attached to the side of the beam'C. v
These gates, and the parts connected therewitlr,-7
may be made lof either wood or iron, or partly of wood and partly of iron', as may he deemed mostadvisahle.
I am aware that two hinged horizontal beams for supporting a gate, andan arrangement of separate `levers for opening and closing.'the-latter, are in use;
bnt my invention docsnot pertain to these. A Having thus described my invention,
I claim as new and desire to secnre byV Letters Pat- In combination with the gate E F G and the beam Witnesses:
