ATTACHMENT FOR BARBERs CHAIRS.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed July 10, 1911.
Patented May 13, 1 913. Serial No. 637,803.
To all whom it may concern Be it knoWn that I, BILLY Heal) SMITH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Marshfield, in the county of Coos and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Attachments for Barbers Chairs; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to an for barbers chairs and the like, but more i particularly to an auxiliary seat to be used I attachment in connectiop with a barbers chair of usual constructionfor the purpose of facilitating the cutting of childrens hair or the hair of l persons of short stature. l
The usual construction of barbers chairs 1 is such that in operating upon the head of a child great difliculty is experienced by the l barber owing to the fact that the head of the l to the top of the chair l and consequently the work of cutting the hair is attended with great ditliculty and results are far from satisfactory.
It is for the purpose of obviating these di'tliculties that I have constructed this attachment to be used in connection with barbers chairs of usual construction; and the invention consists in the arrangement of an I child does not reach auxiliary seat to be applied to a barbers chair to accommodate a child or person of small stature in such manner that the harbor will have free access all around the childs head so that the operation of cutting the hair can be quickly accomplished and with satisfactory results.
The invention also consists in certain novel details of construction and in combinations of parts, all of which will be first fully described and afterward specifically, pointed out in the appended claim.
Referring to the accompanying drawing: Figure l is a perspective View of a barbers chair illustrating the auxiliary seat in opera- 1 tive position thereon, the base of the chair j being broken away as the same forms no part of this invention. Fig. 2 is a bottom I plan View of the auxiliary seat, and Fig. 3 I is a longitudinal vertical sectional view 1 through the seat on line 33 of Fig. 2.
Like numerals of reference indicate the same parts throughout the several figures in which;
1 indicates a barbers chair or the like of any approved construction, the base 2 being shown broken away, the chair 1 being mounted on the base 2 and being adjustable vertically as is the usual practice with barbers chairs and the like in such manner as to raise or lower the occupant of the chair to a height convenient to the harbor, the chair 1 being provided with arms 3 and 4 as shown in Fig. 1.
5 indicates the auxiliary scat which ma be of any suitable material but preferably light in weight so as to be easily operated, the auxiliary seat 5 preferably comprising a Hat horizontal support 6 widened at 7 to provide a longer supporting surface on the arm 4; of the chair 1, the extreme end S of the [lat support (5 being preferably provided with two clips 9 which pass under the arm 3 of the chair 1 and engage the same at 10 as clearly shown in Fig. 1, the end portion of the Hat support (3 holding the clips 9 being widened at 11 as shown in the drawing. The opposite end of the flat support 6 is widened at 12 and supports the seat 13, the support 6 being provided with a longitudinal slot 1 1 through which the bolt 1?, carrying the seat 13, passes, this construction allowing for a longitudinal adjustment of the seat 13 on the flat support 6 in such manner as to arrange the occupant of the seat nearer or closer to the chair proper.
As the chair 1 is adjustable vertically the auxiliary seat 5 is vertically adjustable with the chair in such manner as to maintain the occupant of the seat at a height convenient to the barber while this construction allows the harbor to have free access to the head of the occupant of the seat in such manner that tie work can be quickly, easily and satisfactorily accomplished. A further advantage of this construction is that the hair cut from the head of the occupant of the seat falls on the floor and not on the chair as is usual, thus providing an extremely clean and sanitary arrangement which embodies extreme simplicity in operation and is cheap and easy of construction.
Having thus described the invention it is at once apparent that the same is capable of a number of modifications, and I consider myself clearly entitled to any changes in construction which fall within the scope of the appended claim, and I therefore claim to afford a stable support for theseat, the
as my invention and desire to secure by etchair-arm attaching end of said supporting 15 ters Patent of the United States; M LY member being also laterally extende and A device of the type described, including having applied thereto angular clips adapta flat supporting member adapted to be aped to engage the chair-arm to which said plied transversely to the arms of a barbers' supporting member is thereby attached.
