Carothers, Hayward, Calif. Application February 10, 1950, Serial No. 143,571 Claims. (Cl. 155-131) The present invention relates to seat attachments for barber chairs and more particularly to a seat attachment of this character for children which can be readily attached to and removed from a standard barber chair and which places the child in an advantageous position both for work by the barber and for attention from his parent or other companion.

The above and other objects of the invention are at tained in certain preferred embodiments of the invention as disclosed herein and as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:

Figure 1 is a perspective view of the childs barber chair in position on the standard chair.

Figure 2 is a side elevational view of the chair attachment in place.

Figure 3 is an elevational View of a modified form of chair.

Figure 4 is a perspective view of the form of chair shown in Figure 3.

In the cutting of childrens hair, one of the principal difficulties encountered is placing the child in a readily accessible position and at the same time in a position in which he can be kept interested and quiet by his accompanying parent or companion. In accordance with the instant invention, there is shown a childs barber seat attachment including a seat 11 supported by a bracket structure including two similar straps 12 each of which is formed with a horizontal U-shaped upper portion 12a at its point of attachment to the seat 11 to provide a resilient support. Each strap then extends forwardly to a saddle portion which engages the top of the adjacent side arm rest 13 of the standard barber chair 14. The straps 12 are bent downwardly at 12b to engage the inner surface of the arm rest and complete the saddle portion. The lower ends of the straps 12 are bent outwardly at 12c to extend through the space between the arm rest 13 and the seat 16 of the chair and overlap the outer side of the side frame portion 17 of the standard barber chair. The chair 11 is positioned with its front edge substantially vertically aligned with the inner surface of the arm rest so that the childs legs and feet are placed at one side of the seat 16. It will be noted that this mounting of the chair 10 holds it in an elevated position and in outboard position at one side of the standard barber chair, so that the barber can stand closely adjacent to either side or in back of the child while cutting the childs hair. At the same time the regular seat 16 of the standard chair is substantially unobstructed so that it can be occupied by the person accompanying the child to keep his attention occupied and to thereby assist in the haircutting operation.

The form of the invention shown in Figure 3 is to adapt the invention for use with another type of standard barber chair 21 in which there is no opening beneath the arm rests 13. In this form of the invention, the supporting brackets or straps for the chair are provided with an L-shaped extension 22 which engages inside of the arm 13 and a downwardly extending bracing section 23 which engages outside of the frame portion 17 to maintain the chair securely in place.

From the above description of the invention, it will be apparent that the chair provides a readily attachable and detachable accessory to the standard barberchair for facilitating the haircutting operations by placing the child in an elevated accessible location at one side of the standard chair and by using a mounting in which the regular seat 16 of the standard barber chair is free for occupancy by the person accompanying the child.

While I have shown and described certain preferred embodiments of the invention, it will be apparent that the invention is capable of both variation and modification from the form shown so that the scope thereof should be limited only by the scope of the claims appended hereto.

I claim:

1. A childs seat attachment for mounting in outboard position upon a standard barber chair, comprising a seat and a supporting bracket structure secured thereto, said bracket structure including a substantially U-shaped resilient seat engaging portion, an angle-shaped saddle portion with one leg of the angle forming a continuation of said U-shaped portion and the other leg extending verti- Cally downward from a location adjacent the front of said seat, and a bracing portion connected to and extending downwardly and rearwardly from said vertical leg.

A childs seat attachment for a standard barber chair, said attachment comprising a seat and a supporting bracket structure secured thereto, said bracket structure comprising a U-shaped resilient seat-engaging portion, a saddle portion connected to said seat-engaging portion and disposed beneath the front portion of the attachment seat with the childs seat supported in outboard position with respect to the standard barber chair, and a bracing portion connected to and extending downwardly from said saddle portion.

In a childs seat attachment for mounting in outboard position upon a standard barber chair, comprising a seat and a supporting bracket structure secured thereto, said bracket structure including a substantially U-shaped resilient seat-engaging portion having the closed end of the U adjacent the rear of the seat, an angle-shaped saddle portion with one leg of the angle forming a continuation of the lower branch of said U-shaped portion and the other leg extending vertically downward from a location adjacent the front of said seat, and a rearwardly curved bracing portionformed as an extension of said other leg.

Equipment facilitating the cutting of childrens hair and comprising a barber chair provided with a seat for an adult person and arm rests on opposite sides of the adults seat, a childs seat having a seat portion, childs arm rests and a back, and gripping parts secured to the seat portion of the childs seat remova'bly holding the childs seat on one arm rest only of the barber chair with the seat portion of the childs seat extending across the top of said one arm rest and the childs seat facing toward the side of the adults seat, whereby a child occupying the childs seat will be immediately adjacent and facing one side of the adults seat so as to face toward a person sitting in the adults seat.
