Description

J. A. FULLER.
CIGAR END CUTTER.
APPLIOATION mum JAN. 19. 1912.
1,061,236. Patented May 6, 1913.
UNITED, STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JAMES A. FULLER, OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIGNOR TO HAMILTON AND HAMILTON, JR., OF PROVIDENCE, RHODE ISLAND.
CIGAR-END CUTTER.
To all whom it may concern Be it known, that I, J AMES A. FULLER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Cigar-End Cutters, of which the following is a specification.
This invention pertains to certain new and useful improvements in cigar end cutters, and the object of the invention is to provide a cutter of this type which is compact, simple and economical in its construction, and which can be made in the form of a charm, to be worn attached to a watch chain or the like.
In the drawings which illustrate an embodiment of the invention Figure 1 is a perspective view. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the outer casing removed and the interior parts exposed. Fig. 3 is a similar view of the cutter proper. Fig. 4 is a like view of the cigar end centering device, and Fig. 5 is a longitudinal sectional View taken through Fig. 1.
The centering device consists of a housing having side plates 1 1 that are spaced apart and are formed with registering apertures 2 in which the cigar end is placed or introduced and held by the walls formed by said apertures. The side plates are connected by an end wall 3 and side walls 4, whereby a hollow housing is provided. The side plates at their free ends are contracted as indicated at 5 and are formed with a perforation 6. One of the contracted portions 5 of the side plates is formed with an offset spring tongue 7 that has an aperture 8 formed therein which aperture 8 registers with perforation 6.
The cutter member is composed of a plate 9 having a substantially V-shaped notch at one end, the walls of which are beveled to form sharp cutting edges 10. The opposite sides of the plate 9 adjacent the cutting end thereof are formed with parallel longitudinal slots 11 which form side bars 12 over which coil springs 13 are placed, as depicted in Fig. 2 of the drawings. The opposite end of the plate 9 is formed with an aperture 1 1 for the purpose of having a chain attached thereto. The plate 9 is also formed with an integral central spring tongue 15 which is provided with an elongated central slot 16.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed January 18, 1912.
Serial No. 671,837.
As shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings the cutter end of the plate 9 is received in the housing formed by the side plates 1 1 so as to slide therein, the inner ends of the coil springs 13 abutting the inner ends of said housing, whereby when the plate 9 is moved inwardly, the knife edges 10 thereof will be projected across the apertures 2 and the coil springs will be compressed.
A pin 17 extends through the member 19 of the casing and is secured in the aperture 8 formed in the spring 7 of the housing. The pin then extends through the slot 16 of the spring tongue 15 of the plate 9 and into the perforation (3 of the housing. hen the plate 9 is released the coiled springs will slightly expand, but as the top of spring tongue 15 will have moved under the plate 5 of the housing 1, the cutter plate 9 will be held in closed or locked position. To release the cutter plate 9, slight pressure on the pin 17 will force the spring tongue 7 in contact with the spring tongue 15, forcing the top of the same from under the plate 5 of the housing, thus releasing the cutter blade, whereupon the coiled springs 13 will act to move the cutter plate 9 up and into operative position.
All of the parts above described are inclosed in an ornamental outer casing composed of the members 18 and 19. The outer casing may be formed of any desired shape and may be given the effect of a charm, permitting the device to be worn as such and attached to a watch chain or the like. The outer casing has registering openings 20 that aline with the apertures of the housing.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent 1. In a cigar cutter, a housing having apertures to receive the cigar tip and formed with contracted free end portions, one of said end portions having a spring tongue struck out therefrom and formed with a perforation, a plate having elongated slots at opposite sides thereof to form bars, coiled springs mounted over said bars, said plate having knife edges at one end, and also having a slotted spring tongue struck out therefrom, said plate being slidably mounted in the housing and having the inner ends of its coiled springs abutting the inner end of the housing on opposite sides of said contracted Patented May 6, 1913.
parts thereof, the spring tongue of the plate engaging the housing, an outer casing inclosing the housing and the plate, and a pin that extends through the perforation inthe spring tongue of the housing, through the slot of the spring tongue of the plate and through the side of the housing opposite to that having the spring tongue for operating said spring tongue of the housing to cause same to disengage the spring tongue of the plate from the casing.
, 2. In a cigar cutter, a housing having cigar tip receiving apertures and also having contracted portions, a cutter member sliding in the housing, said cutter member having bars formed on its opposite sides, and coiled springs surrounding the bars and located on opposite sides of the contracted portions of the housing and engaging the latter at points at the juncture between the housing and the contracted portions thereof.
3. In a cigar cutter, a housing, a spring pressed cutter sliding in the housing and having a spring tongue that engages the housing to lock the cutter against movement relative to the housing, and a member car-' ried by the housing to engage said tongue to move same out of engagement With the housing, said tongue having movement independent of said member When the cutter is moved housing.
t. In a cigar cutter, a housing, a spring pressed cutter member sliding in the housing, a spring member integral With the cutter member for engagement With the housing to hold the cutter member against movement, a spring tongue integral With the housing to engage one face of said spring member to move thelatter out of engagement With the housing, and a pin connected to the tongue and extending Without the housing to enable operation of the tongue.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing Witnesses.
, JAMES A. FULLER. l/Vitnesses ADA E. HAGERTY, I J. A. MILLER.
