Description

' l llluitedgratte' @tutti .-Qtllte.
` To all persons to whom these preseats'mavy come:
MIGAJA'H c.` BURLE'IGH, or soMEnsWoR'TH, NEW HAMPSHIRE.
Letters Patent No. 106,116, dated August 9, 1879.
'IMPROVEMENT `IN MJEICHANISM FOR ACTU'ATING- THE PICKER-STAFF IN LOOMS.
lThe `Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making pari:v of the same.
Be it known that I, vlt/IICAJAH C.`BURL`EGH, of Somerswortlniu the county of' Straiord and State of New `Hampshire,yh'aye made a new and useful in` vention, having reference to Mechanism for Actuat- `ing the lickerQStaft' of a Loom; and 'dohereby-de- `clare the same to be fully `described in the following specification and represented in `the accompanying `drawing', of whioh` Figure 1 denotesa top view;
`llignre 2,712. sideelevation; and Figure 3, a longitudinal section of such mechanism with my improvement.
' Figure 4 is a top view offthe supporting-.arm to be hereinafter described.
Figure 5 `is an under-side'view of picker-stad rock- `er-foot.
My improvement or invention consists in 'a peculiar i arrangement of theoperative spring and its pin of the `picker-statt' rocker-foot with the supporting-arm ofthe said foot, and with ayoke extended down from the foot, as,hereinafterexplained;
In such drawing- .p A l A. denotes the supporting-arm, as usually fixed to the lay of the I oom, itsupper surface, or that in which the rocker-foot Brests, being aplain surface.
Two teeth or projections, a a., extend 4up from opposite sidesovf thesaid surface, and with an interval or space, b,bet\veen them, theybeing arranged near f the middle of the arm.`
These teeth also project beyond vthe opposite vsides of. the arm,1so as toconstitute abntments or shouldersfor a yoke, O, torest against. 1
The said yoke projects 'downward from the rockerfoot B, and embracesthe arm A on its opposite edges,
l andhas a hole, c, made `through its transver'seconneetion r, to receivesV pin, D, which extends through it in manner asreprcsented, and is encompassed by a helical spring, E. i
The pin and spring stand obliquelyl to the arm A, the pin; at its upper end `being pivoted to the arm, and
there being provided Ywith a -head or shoulder, e,for one end of the spring'to rest against. i
The rocker-foot B is formed with two niches or recesses, ff, to receive the teeth a a in manner as represented, the tread or'bearing-surface of the foot being extended between such niches f f in manner as represented. Y Y v From the above it will be seen that there is not one tooth or projection carried entirely across the supporting-arm, and, to operate with a niched recess, carried entirely acrossV the roker-foot,l for when f such is the case, there is not a continuous bearing of' the rockerfoot., such as there is whenthe twoprojections and niches are employed, and arranged' with the rockerfoot'and arm as hereinbefore explained.
Without the continuous bearing the operative parts are not so well supported, and are more liable to be noisy when in use.`
The picker-staff, by means of a clamp, is'to be xed to a Socketed projection, h,raised on the rocker-foot, or making part thereof.
With my arrangement of the several parts, the spring is so disposed as to operate to excellent advantage, and is not liableto easily become broken under the suddenaction 9F theepicker-sta.
I vwouldobserve that I make no claim to a Arockerfo'otand a snpporting-arm-- combined with a pickel-f staff and the lay of a loom, and having a spring for retraeting the foot after each throw of the picker-stad', .the object of the rocker-'arm being to cause the shuttie-nose bearing pai-tof the arm, or the picker thereof, to tlavel in a horizontal line.
I claim- The spring E, its vsupportfpin D, the yoke O, the arm A, and the rocker-toot- B, the whole constructed, combined, and arranged substantially as described.
MIoAJAH o. BURLEIGH.
