Description
UNITED STATES Pagans. OFFICE.
LESTER 8. RILEY, O! BOSTON, MASSACHUSETTS, ASSIGNORTO PROGRESS MANUFAC- TUBING OOMPANY, A' CORPORATION OF MASSACHUSETTS.
nmvnasari ootmrna.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented May 6, 1913.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Lns'ran S. RILEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Boston, Roxbury district, Massachusetts, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Universal Counters, of which the following is a specification.
My present invention relates to improvements in counters or male dies for use in conjunction with the intaglio steel or like dies adapted for embossing note paper and the like.
One object of the invention is to rovide a counter which will act as a male is for a lar r number of intaglio dies.
further object is to provide a counter which will give, in conjunction with such intaglio dies, a clear and sharp impression without requiring excessively heavy pressure, thus enabling the embossing to be done by a light portab e machine.
My invention is illustrated by the aid of the accompanying drawings in which- Figure 1 is a sectional elevation. Fig. 2 is a similar view at ri ht angles to Fi 1. Fig. 3 is a plan view 0 the counter. Fig. 4 is a bottom plan view of the same.
Referring by reference characters to this drawing the numeral 1 designates a metal carrying plate which is provided with a lurality of (preferably two) pins adapte to fit into recesses 2" of the base of the ress, which is indicated conventionally at 5, for the purpose of removably holding it in position.
8 indicates a to or holder which is constructed preferab y of sheet metal having overturned edges or flan es on three sides which enables it to be 5 id onto and into engagement with the carrier, the overturned edges overlapping the edges of the carrier plate as shown. This holder is provided with a central opening 4 of a size somewhat in excess of the ntag 1o portions of the dies used in conjunction therewith and beneath the plate and extending across the openin is arranged first a layer of kid or thin leat er 5 and then and next below a layer of cloth 6.
The 0 enin for convenience is shown as round at 0 course may be of any suitable or desired shape.
Beneath the cloth and in line with the o ening is located a disk of rubber 7 of a size and shape corresponding to the opening and beneath this is a disk of paper or other fiber of similar size and shape indicated at 8. As these disks are of approximately the diameter of the opening they cause the kid to be projected through the opening as shown, forming a raised cushion for the die 9 to act against.
In order to prevent the paper being embossed from catching on the projecting cushion, I provide a spring tongue or deflector 10, preferably integral, as shown.
Having thus described my invention what I claim is 1. In combination a carrier plate, a holding plate having a detachable edge connection with the carrier plate and having a central opening, a layer of flexible material between said olding plate and carrier and extending across the openin and a member of elastic material beneath the layer of flexible material, said member corresponding in size and shape to said opening and being located in line with said opening.
2. In combination with a base, a carrier plate detachably connected thereto, a holding plate having its edges detachably connected to the carrier plate and having a central opening, a layer of flexible material between said lates and extending across the opening, a cue ion member beneath said layer and in line with the opening.
3. In combination a carrying plate, a holdingplate detachably connected thereto and having a central opening, a layer of kid between said plates and extendin across the o ening, a la er of fabric exten ing beneath t e layer of id, 0. rubber member or square beneath the fabric and in line with the open- 1n and a fiber member forming a support to said rubber member or square, substantially as described. a
4. In combination a holding plate having a central opening, a layer of kid extending beneath the 1101 ing plate and across the opening, a cushion member beneath said layer and in line with theopening for caus- 5 ing the kid to project, throughthe o ening and a deflecting ton ue carried by sai holding plate, snbstant-ia 1y as described.
Copies of thin patent may be ebulned for LESTER S. RILEY.
