TINTTEE %TATE@ PATENT @FFTQE FREDERICK I1- MGCULLOCH AND WATSON E. DORCI-IESTER, OF TAMPA, FLORIDA.
DEVICE FOR OPERATING BLINIDS OF WINDOW-SHUTTERS.
To all 107mm may concern.
Be it known that we, FREDERICK L. MC- OULLoon: and YVVATSON E. DORCI-IESTER, citi- Zens of the United States, residing at Tampa, in the county of Hillsboro and State of Florida, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Devices for Operating Blinds of Window-Shutters; and we do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
The present invention relates to window shutters, and has for its purpose to provide a device whereby the blinds of the "shutter may be operated while the windows are closed; and wherein either set of blinds of the shutter may be operated independently of the other.
The invention has for its further to provide a device of the character tion which will be inexpensive to install; one which is of simple design and may be easily operated; and which will be inconspicuous when in position.
VVit-h these and other objects in view the invent-ion consists in the novel details of construction and combinations of parts more fully hereinafter disclosed and particularly pointed out in the claims.
Referring to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification in which like numerals designate like parts in all the views :Figure 1 is a detail perspective view of the blind operating members carried by the shutter; Fig. 2 is a front elevational view showing the application of the device as in use; Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through the window frame, showing in elevation the lever actuating device; and Fig. 4 is a top plan view of the device as in use.
Referring to the construction in detail, 1 designates a section of the window frame, and 2 the cross piece of the shutter 3, which shutter is hinged to the window frame in the usual manner and indicated herein by the reference character 4.. The shutter 33 has an upper and a lower set of blinds 5 and 6 respectively, each having the usual operating strip 7 loosely connected to the individual blinds as in the ordinary manner, and which in the present instance are utilized with the purpose in ques- Specifieation of Letters Patent.

device for operating the blind from within the room and while the windows are closed.
A pair of similarly shaped levers 8 and 9 are pivotally mounted on a common pivot consisting of a screw 10, and a nut 11 is mounted on said screw intermediate the levers and provides a spacing device for keeping said levers the proper distance apart. The longer ends of said levers ha ve engagement with the adjacent ends 12 of theshutter strips 7 by passing through suitable eye members 13 secured to said strips as shown in Fig. 2. The shorter ends 14 and 15 respectively of the levers and 9 are disposed adjacent a cut-away portion 16 formed in the windowframe 1, as shown in Figs. 3 and 4, and said lever portions (14 and 15) are adapted to be individually actuated by a suitable device for shifting the blind strips 7 through the medium of the longer lever portions 8 and 9 that engage therewith.
The lever actuating device consists of a bar 17 that passes through and is jourualed within the window frame 1, and which has its outer end bent to provide a projection 18 that acts as a lever for engaging with and actuating the lever portions 1 and 15 when said shaft 17 is manipulated by the handle 19. Said handle 19 is secured to the inner end of the shaft 17 through the medium of a nut 20, as shown in Fig. 3. The shaft 17 is adapted to be moved endwise within the opening through the frame 1, whereby the end 18 of said shaft may engage with either of the lever ends 14 and 15 accordingly as it is desired to regulate the upper or lower sets of blinds. The two positions of the shaft 17 are shown by full and dotted lines respectively in Fig. 3. In cases where there are three sets of blinds on one shutter, the two top sets would be fastened together by any suitable means. and in this manner both sets could be operated at the same time.
The rod actuating handle 19 and the rod end 18 are adapted to be disposed in parallel relation, to the end that their combined weight will cause the same to hang downwardly at all times whether the window shutters are opened or closed, and from which position the blinds of the shuttermay be regulated as desired.
It is obvious that those skilled in the art may vary the details of construction and ar rangement of parts Without departing from the spirit of our invention, and therefore we do not Wish to be limited to such features except as may be required by the claims.
What we claim is 1. The combination with a shutter having independent sets of blinds, and a shutter support, of means for operating each set of said blinds comprising a lever pivotally mounted on the shutter; and 'a common actuating device for said levers mounted on said support and shittable thereon to engage with either of said levers, substantially as described.
2. The combination with a shutter having independent sets of blinds, and a shutter support, of means for operating each set of said blinds comprising a lever pivotally mounted on the shutter; and a shittable shaft journaled on said support and having one end thereof constructed to engage with either of said levers; and a handle for actuating said shaft, substantially as described.
In testimony whereof, we afliX our signatures, in presence of two witnesses.
