.ADJUSTABLE GARMENT-FORM.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 29, 1913.
Application filed August 8, 1912. Serial No. 713,971.
To all fr/wm 25 may concern.'
Be it known that I, IsAAo LEVIN, a citizen j illustrated and described in a patent issued to me on the 23rd day of August, 1910, and bearing the Patent Number 968,169. My improved skirt portion can, however, be used in connection with the ordinary bust form.
To carry out the object of my invention,`
I form the skirt portion out of flat, and preferably spring metal, strips which will twist as the skirt portion is folded. To render the skirt portion adjustable, that is to say capable of being increased or decreased in diameter, I make up the said skirt portion out of a plurality of sections which can be slid one upon the other, in order that the diameter of the skirt portion can be changed. By virtue of the manner which I employ to slidably connect the sections, the said skirt portion can be adjusted at the top or bottom thereof independently of each other. Y
I will now proceed to describe my inven tion in detail, the novel features of which I will finally point out in the claims, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, forming part hereof, wherein:
Figure 1 is a front elevation of a bust form having applied thereto my improved skirt portion; Fig. 2 isa top plan view of the skirt portion alone; Fig. 3 is an enlarged detail view, broken away, showing one of the sections which go to make up the skirt portion; Fig. 4 is an enlarged sectional plan view, the section being taken on a line 4 4 in Fig. 1; Fig. 5 is a detail view illustrating the skirt portion as adjusted to increase the diameter at the bottom thereof; Fig. 6 is an enlarged verticalsectional view, the section being taken on a line 6-6 in Fig. 2, illustrating the manner of slidably securing thev `sections together, ya plate for securing the skirt portion to the bust portion being also,
shown; Fig. 7 is a detail view illustrating the skirt portion as folded; and Fig. 8 illustrates a modified form of plate for supporting the skirt portion.
Referringv to Fig. 1, the numeral 1 indicates an adjustable bust portion, which is set forth in the above-referred to patent, comprising the sections 2, 3, and 4, which sections are adjustably connected by a toggle joint 5. The object of the adjustable bust form is to provide such.a device which is capable of having its bust, hip, or waist dimensions changed. In said Fig. 1 my improved skirt portion is indicated by the numeral 6 and consists of the band members 7 8, 9 and 10, which in turn have pivotally connected thereto vertical strips 11, which are made out of flat resilient metal as are the band members referred to. The strips 11 are pivotally secured to said band members by eyelets or rivets 12. As can be seen in Fig. 2, the skirt portion 6 is made up of a plurality of sections 18, 14, 15 and 16 secured together at 17, and as can be seen in Fig. 3, each band member 7 8, 9 and 10 is provided adjacent each end thereof with a slot 18. To complete the form `I join, by a slidable connection, the sections 13, 14, l5 and 16 as shown. The means which I employ to join the said sections consists of auxiliary strips 11EL similar to the strips 11. To j o-in the sections the slotted ends of the band members are placed together, as shown in Fig. 4. I then pass a rivet or eyelet 12fL through the strips 11a and slots 18 in the band members, employing washers 19 (Fig. 2) for certain of said rivets or eyelets, and slotted plates v2O for the remaining rivets or eyelets in the to-p band. The rivets or eyelets 12a in the remaining band members are backed by washers only. The rivets 12 and 12a`are not upset enough to bind the band members and strips tightly but just enough to produce a firm pivotal connection. The slotted plates movably secure the skirt portion to the bust form as shown in Fig. 1. As each plate 20 is slidably held to the form 1 by rivets or screws 21 which pass through the slots 22, and as each of the said plates is pivotally secured to its band member, it is quite apparent that the skirt portion 6 can be moved upwardly on the form, to the eX- tent of the slots 20, in order that the skirt portion, when folded, as shown in Fig. 7 can be slid or moved over the lower end of to slightly flatten the bands at the joints 17 ,j
as indicated by dotted lines 23 (Fig. 2), in order to remove the binding effect produced at this point by the pressure of the resiliency of the bands. After the joint 17 has been flattened, the sections can be drawn apart or moved together. Each joint 17 is treated iny this manner. After having adjusted the sections, one upon the ot-her, the joints are allowed to assume their curved position.
The sections will remain in an adjusted position by reason of the pressure of the sections, one upon the other, at the joints 17. The
resiliency of the material supplies the pres-- sure. rlhe bottom of the skirtportion can be adjusted, independently of the top thereof, in the above described manner (see Fig. 5).
It will be apparent from the foregoing description that my skirt form comprises sections which are slidably connected and that each section is made up of yieldable elements pivotally secured together.
To render the skirt portion easily dis; mountable I provide the plates 20` with openings 24 which are larger in diameter than the heads of the screws or rivets 21, the said openings 24 being in communication with the slots in the plate. To remove the skirt portion from the bust portion, I simply move the skirt portion upwardly until the heads of the-'rivets aline with the openings 24, at which .time the plates may be moved outwardly and over the said heads.
To brace the lower end of the skirt portion, I preferably employ braces 25, which consist of the slidably connected members 27 and 28 (see Fig. 2). 'Ihe inner end of each of the braces is pivotally connected to a rotatable plate 29, which in turn is car` ried by the block 30 carried by the supporting post 31. The outer end of each of the braces is carried by the lower band member of the skirt port-ion. Should the bust form be tilted forward on its support, the braces 25 may be adjusted to hold the skirt portion in the proper position relative to the inclined bust portion. The braces preferably extend from the front of the skirt portion to the plate 29.
In Fig. 8, which illustrates another form of supporting plate for the skirt portion, I employ a pivotal guard 32, which, when moved to the dotted line position, prevents the removal of the skirt portion, but when moved to the full line position permits the skirt portion to be moved .upY untillthe heads of the rivets 21 reach the openings 24, at
which time the skirt portion can be removed from the bust form.
By referring to Fig. 2 it will be seen that I have provided between the slidable brace members 27 and 28 a small slidable plate 33, which, when moved toward either of the points of securement of the brace members, will tend to force said members apart, thus binding them against the points of securement and constituting a lock to hold the braces in adj-usted positions.
Having now described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letter-s Patent is: l
1. A skirt portion comprising a plurality of sections, each section comprising a plurality of resilient band members adapted to lap one over the other, provided at the ends thereof with slots, a plurality of vertically disposed resilient strips pivotally connected to said band members, intermediate the said slots, a plurality of vertically disposed auxiliary strips located at the overlapping slotted ends of said band members, and securing means connecting said last named strips to said band members, said securing means passing through said slots.
2. A skirt portion comprising a plurality of sections, each section comprising a plurality of resilient band members adapted to lap one over the other and provided with slots at the ends thereof, a plurality of vertically disposed resilient strips, pivotally secured to said resilient band members, intermediate the said slots, slotted plates pivotally secured to upper band member intermediate the slotted ends thereof, a plurality of vertically disposed auxiliary resilient strip members, located at the overlapping slotted ends of said resilient band members, securing means connecting said last named resilient strips to .said resilient band members, said securing means passing through said slots and a slotted plate located at each joint of said resilient band members, said plate being secured by the securing means of one of said auxiliary resilient strip members.
