1 To all whom it may i v 7 Be it known that LCnarms "M; Leaner,
:a citizen of the United States, residing at Monroe City, in the county of Monroe and State of Missouri, have invented certain new and usefullmprovements 1n Ironing-Tables,
of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to new and useful imp'rovementsin ironing board structures and particularly to an ironing board structure having a novel extensible brace or leg.
In the accompanying drawings forming a part ofthis application and in whichlike numerals are employed'to designate like parts throughout the same, Figure 1 is a side view of the ironing board structure complete, Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional nection between thetray or clothes support and the ironingboard leg or brace and the 'means tohold the "tray or clothes support in its horizontal position.
- In the drawings wherein for the purpose of illustration, I have shown a preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 5 designates an ironing boardof the usual construction, the same being provided at its larger end with an open ngfi, for re-' ceiving .therethrough the'upper end of an ironing board leg or brace 7,= as shown, Attached to the lower surface ofthe ron ng board 5 are transverse strips 8, carrying spaced longitudinally extending strips-or pieces 9, as shown. Theleg or brace 7 0perates between these longitudinal '-strips 9,. and is pivotallyconnected therewithby a transverse bolt 10, as shown. At-its upper end't-he leg or brace 7 is provided with a jaw 11, whichclamps the top of the table 12 orthe like into engagement with the end of the ironing .board 5. It is obvious that when the ironing board: structure is not in use, the same may be readily disconnected from the table 12, subsequently to which the leg or brace 7 may be swung toward the, ironing board 5, to lie approximately flat or parallel with relation'to the same.
The numeral. 13 designates a flat tray or clothes support, as a whole, which is arranged a suitable distance below the ironing board 5 and is much'wid'er than the same to extend laterally u on both-sides beyond the ironing board. e tra or clothes sup 011; 1315 formedot a plurality oflongitudinally extending sections 14: and 15,- the sections. 14
being hin ed to the section'15 The main inner section 15 comprises acentral or Ina-in longitudinal strip 16, provided with ;trans-' verse grooves 17* for receiving transverse strips 17, as shown. These transverse strips 17 are provided near and spaced from their ends with transverse grooves 18,- itorreceiving longitudinal .strips. 19, as shown. "Frieouter sections 14 comprise transverse strips 20, pivotally connected with the transverse verse strips 20 included in the outer-sections are provided with transverse grooves 22, re ceiving longitudinalstrips 23,' 'a-sshown-. It is" thus seen that the outer sections 14: may bev swung upwardly and downwardlyto be folded upon the upper surface of the main or inner section 15, but'cannot'be swung outwardly "and downwardly below the horizontal, so that the outer sections 14 lie inthe same horizontal plane with the inner sec- ..tion 15.
' The numeral'2a designates a hinge, serving toconnect one endof the main longitudh nal strip 1-6 with the leg or. brace 7 ,so that thetray or. clothes support 13 may be swung strips 17 bymeans of hinges 21. The'trans-v in a vertical plane with relation to theleg or brace; "7' 'NVhen 'the tray or clothes sup-- port 13- is in its operative position,.t-he'same is horizontal, as shown in Fig. 1.
f The numeral 25 designates 'a U-shaped bracket or support, having lower ends straddling the legor brace 7 and pivotallyconnected therewith, as shown at 26. The
upper or transverse portion of thisU-shaped bracket or support is mounted to' operate within a longitudinal slot 27 formed through the main longitudinal strip 16 of the manu inner section 15, as shown. At its outer end the longitudinal slot or opening 27 isprovided with anupper enlargement 28, to receive the transverse'portion of the bracket or support 25, when the latter 1s moved to its operative position, as clearly shown in- Fig. 4. It. is thus seen that pressure upon the tray or clothes support 13- will hold the bracket or support 25 within the enlarged opening 28, thus preventing accidental displacement. of the bracket or support. It is obvious that by swinging. the bracket or support 25 toward the hinge 24, the tray or clothes support 13; may be swung towar the .log or brace 7, to lie flat u on the same.
.VVhen the tray o'r-clothes sup trt 13 is thus upon. the rods 32, with relation to the leg.
or brace. vv
collapsed, it is obvious that the inner end thereof will clear the adjacent ends of the strips 9, when the leg or brace 7 is in turn swung towardthe ironing board 5. The outer sections 14 of the tray or clothes support 13 are swung inwardly upo-nfthe inner section 15, beforethe leg or brace 7 is swung toward the ironing board 5. Fig. 3 shows how the device will look when all of the'elements thereof are folded or collapsed.
The leg or brace 7 is extensible by providling thesa meat its lower end witha foot or extension which is a'da ted to be 'moved longitudinally toward an away from the legor brace proper. The foot 30 has longitudinal openings 31, to receive guide rods 32, which are attached to the leg 7 and-preferably have screw-threaded engagement therewith. Means are provided'to hold the foot 30 in adjustment at difierent positions Such means comprisesuitably resilient spring strips 33, which are preferably attached to the foot or extension 30, as
shown. The spring strips 33 carry inwardly extending ratchet teeth 34,'t engage with ratchet teeth 35, formed upon the lower end of the leg or brace 7, as sho n. The teeth 34: and 35' are so faced thatthey positively The free ends obvious th revent the foot 30 from moving toward the eg 7, when the teeth are in engagement. I f the spring strips 33'are freely detachabiy connected with the leg 7, by-means of,bscrews 36 or'the like. It is aty removing the screws 36, the foot -30 may be moved ,toward and away from the leg 7 whereby said leg is longitudt nally extensible in effect.
In the use of the device, the difierent elements or parts thereof are arranged in their operative position, as. more clearly illus-' incense trated in Figs. 1 and 2. The tray or clothes support 13 is hor' ontally arranged, as shown. The trayor clothes support 13 is the form of an open or skeleton frame,
the-same is ordinari y covered with cloth'or other suitable mate ial (notshown).
The ironing board 5 is also covered with cloth, asis customary.
When the device 1s not in use the same may be readil disconnected from the table 12 and the di erent parts thereof folded olr joined' claim.
Having fully described my invention, I claim In an ironi g board strllcture, an ironing board, a leg. ivot-ally connected therewith,
guide rods carried by'the lower end of the v a foot having longitudinal openings formed therethrough to receive, 'the guide rods, spring strips connected with the oppoleg,
site longitudinal edges-of thefoot and provided near their. free ends with inwardly extending longitudinal edges of the .leg to be engaged by the first named teeth, and means to de-. tachably connect the free ends of the spring, strips with the leg.
In testimony whereof I affix my signaturein presence of two w tnesses.
