Beit known that we, ANTONIO Sovana-inn and ANGELO GOVERNALE, respectively, citizens of the United States and Italy, and residing at Brooklyn, in the'county of Kings stead Constructions, of which the following is a specilication. such as will enable thosel skilled in the art to which it appertains to l tion and open at the bottom` as shown at c?,
make and use the same.
This invention relates to bedstcads, andV particularly to the corner construction thereof,4 and the object thereof is toprovide .a
strong, simple 'and effective inea ns for securing the side and end rails of a hedstead together and to the corner posts, and by means ofwhich said parts may be easily connected and disconnected whenever desired. I
The invention isvfully disclosed iii the following'` specification otA which the accompanying dra-wings" forni a part, in which the separate parts of our invention. are designated by suitable retiiience characters iiil each of the views, and in wliich`zT- Figure l is a perspective viewJ o toiieof f the cornerv posts of a bedstead and lsliowing paris of one of the side -rails and one end rail, and nica-ns for conneting said rails and connecting the said rails with the corner posts; Fig. 2 a bottom -plan' vie-w of the coristriiction shown in Fig. l; Fig. 3 a section on' the Eine 3 of Fig. 4: Fig. 4 a section i on the line 4 4 of Fig. 3i Fig. 5 a partial section on the line 5 5 of Fig. l; F ig. 6 a

coup -device dwhich is placed in-and is longer -t an'themain coupling b, and which" Ais provided with V-shaped ends d2 and d3,
1g theit of which extends ito the body of the suppementa-l coupling 1c, and the latter of whic in the -a.' The link-shaped coupling device.. ils-formed from' the blank d? shown in 10, and which comprises an oblong body pprtion d provided at one end withA a` The body dis also provided at one side edgeY thereof with a longitudinal notch o zii/1 -and widened j end Aparts d and jd, the widened end part d being that' in which thel slot d formed and being longer than the otherwidened end part d, and the'end part d is provided approximately .centrally thereof with a projecting lug d while the end part Z1? is provided with a projecting lug d.
The blank d* is folded, asshown'in Fig. 3,
to form` the coupling link member d, and iii this operation the neck d. of the blank forms the. -shaped end d of. said coupling link member which extends into the post a, while the narrower part of the body portion d5 forms the V-shaped endmeinber Z2 which extends into the coupling c and the lugs d and d pass through the-apertures b in the top of the main coupling b andare riveted therein. The blank d* is also provided in the. side edge thereof opposite the longitudinal notch d1 with a similar, but shorter longitudinal notch d, atthe ends of which are' tongues d adapted toV to be folded out- -wardly and to form corresponding lock hooks which, on the assembling of the parts as hereinafter described, enter the notches or recesses c in the sides of the coupling member c and aid in binding the parts together.
We also rovide a tie plate e, 'shown de tached in i 7, and in use in Figs. to .5 inclusive, angl one end portion of this tie plate is provided with -a projecting-tongue e. The tie plate e is oblong and rectangular. inform vand theopposite end portions thereof are providedwith holes ea and .e2 and said tie plate is provided centrally with folding lines e and is adapted to be folded into rjghtangled form, and in assembling passes through a transverse slot a."
the various parts, the end portion e thereof fits on the flange as of the end rail zf, while the end portion ethereof llits 'on the top -lange of said end rail and the rtongue e2 is passed outwardly throu h the apertures b and bn -the inner an outer sides of the main coupling b .and through the 'apertures d8 and d in'thelink' coupling' d and is lriv- Tat-ed as shown at es on thel outer side of the lsaid coupling d, and the partsv e and d of the tie plate e are secured to the parts of the end rail a3 by bplts or screws passed through the holes e* sind es in the tie plate and through t-he corresponding parts of the end rail, as shown at e and 61 in Fig. 5.
We also provide a coupling pin f used in connection with the link-shaped device d for securing the supplemental coupling c to thein the top of the supplemental coupling c and riveted therein (xr-thereto, this constructionbeing lclearly shown in Figs. 1 andA 4.
claimed,it will be seen-that the supplemental coupling c is rigidly secured to the side rail c2, and said 'supplemental 'coupling may be quickly, easily and rigidly secured to the main couplin b by pressing the pin f down hrlgu h the -shaped end d2 of the coupling quickly, easily and -rividly secured to the post a by passing the' -shaped end-'ds of the link coupling d into said post, as shown in Figs. 2, 3 and 4, and then dropping a wedge; shaped key pin g down through the V-shaped end d3 of the link-shaped coupling, as shown in said figures.
In connecting the supplemental coupling c With the main coupling b as above described, -the lock hooks formed by the tongues ZW on the link-shaped coupling member d enter notches or recesses c in the sides of the supplemental coupling c and aid in binding said coupling to and in connection with the main coupling b.
With the construction described. and
, and the main coupling b may be It will be understood that the construcl tion at each corner of the bedstead frame is the same, and the side rails a2 with the coupling c may be easily detached from the main corner coupling b whenever desired by simply lifting said rails or supplemental coupling out of position, and while the end rails aP are secured in place only by the bolts or screws c and 61, they may be detached from the main coupling b by removing said bolts or screws, and the main coupling b may be detached from the post-@by removing the wedge-shaped keys g.. In practice, however, after the main couplings are con posts being tubular in forni: said means con- `with leey' pins which are passed therelhrough and the end rails ot' the bedstead4 nected with the posts o they are usually left in sa-id connection, and the side and end rails may be connected with the said main couplings and detached therefrom whenever desired.
Having fully described our invention what we claim as new and desire to secure by liet.- ters Patent is:-
1. The herein described means for conneet-ing the side and end rails of a bedstead with the corner posts thereof` said corner sisting of main corner couplings and supplemental couplings detachably connected therewith, and lto which the side rails are secured` said main corner couplings beingy provided with linksshaped couplingr devices which are secured therein and provided with end projections, the end projections at one end of said link-shaped coupling devices being passed into the posts and the end r0- jectons at the opposite ends ofrsaid linkshaped couplinpy devices being passed into the supplemental couplings, said supplemental i'ouplings beingr provided with cou-A pliner pins which pass lownwardly through the ends of the link-shaped coupling devices which extend"thcreinio, and the ends of said link-shaped couplii'ig devices which are passed into .the posts being also provided beinzcr dctachably .connected witlrthe main corner couplings.
L. The hei-cin described means for conncctingr thc side and end. rails of a beds-tend with the corneijposts;thereof, said corner posts being tubular in forni said means consisting of main corner couplings and supplemental couplings detachably connected therewith and to which the side railc are secured, said main corner couplings being provided with link-shaped coupling devices which are secured therein and provided with end projections, the projections at one end ot' said link-shaped coupling devices being,r passed into the posts` and the projections at. the opposite ends of said link-shaped coupling devices being passed into thc supplemental couplings, said supplemental couplings being provided with coupling pins which pass downwardly through the end projections of the link-shaped coupling devices which extcnd thereinto. and said linkshaped coupling devices being provided at their sides with outwardly directed lock tongues adapted to enter corresponding recesses in the bottoms of the sides of the supplemental couplings, and tbe end projections of said link-shaped coupling devices which are'passed into the posts being also provided with key pins which are passed therethrough, and the end rails of the bedstea-d being secured to the main corner couplinfvs.
In testimony that we claim the foregoing as our invention we have Signed our names in presence of' the subscribing witnesfses` this'lt-h day of January 1913.
