The sleeve 19 is provided with diametri- `cally opposed longitudinal` clutch ribs 25 formed with cam' faces 26 and square abutting surfaces 27, the latter having spaced recesses 28, while the rod or shaft 20 is pro` vided with similar clutch ribs 29 having cam faces 30 and square abutting surfaces 31 formed with recesses 32, the square abutting faces of the ribsof the sleeve and rodforming series 'of spaced interlocking lugs arranged opposite each other. By this construction a clutch connection between the sleeve and rod is 'provided whereby when 'the ribs 29 are spaced from and arranged out of contact with the ribs 25 the rod may slide .freely in either direction, for the quick adjustment of the movable jaw by hand manipulation to approximately clamping position and the retraction of the jaw by the spring 14. j After the movable jaw has been adjusted to approximately clamping position by turning the rod or shaft 20 to the right the lugs 27 -and 31 will be brought into interlocking engagement and couple the sleeve to the rod, allowing the rod to be turned up on the threads ofthe bushing and the movable jaw to be adjusted to firmly clamp the Work, in which position said jaw will be locked. It will thus be understood that a partial rotation of the rod to the left, to return it to normal position, will free the rod and unlock the movable jaw, there-` by releasing the Work, and then -by turning ythe rod farther 5to the left the cam surfaces of the ribs will be brought into engagement, whereupon the sleeve may be turned back to normal position, in which operation the sleeve while rotating slides back on the rod in an obvious manner. By disposing the pin 15 in one or the other ofthe openings 16 the range of opening movement of the A jaw'9 may be varied according tothe size of the work being operated upon.

If desired, the fastening parts above described may be dispensed vwith and the base- Aplate provided wlth a depending bracketv -arm45, as shown in Figs.- 8 and 9. This bracket arm is formed withan inturned lower end 46 projecting under the top of the work-bench or table, said end 46 being formed with a guide .opening 47. A stem 48 is slidably'litted at its lower endin saidopening 47 and is provided with a clamping head 48 and an enlargement 49 formed with l rack-teeth 50. Meshing with/:these teeth is a toothed' segment 51 mounted on av pivot pin 52 in a slot 53 in the arm and having an operating handlel 54. By adjusting this handle downward or upward the head may be moved into and out of clampling position, this construction permitting t e vise to be readily attached to and detached from any of bench or table.
Our improved vise'l is especially adapted for automobile repa-'r work, but will be found generally usefu for all kinds of work and of great convenienceand advantage. for rapid work and in operating upon large or small, objects where quickness and eftlclency ofaction are desirable qualities.
