Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 22, 1913.
Application filed May 21, 1912. Serial No. 698,732.
To all whamz't may concern Be it known that I, JACOB BnLvInLn BEANS, a citizen of the United States, residing in the city and county of Philadelphia, State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Sign, of which the following is a specification.
My invention consists. of an inexpensive and suggestive sign composed of leaves hinged together and adapted to simulate an article'such asa box of cigars in open condition, one leaf comprising the body of the box, and theother leaf comprising the lid thereof, and means adapted to sustain the sign in said condition of theloex for the best effects of display of the same, said leaves and means being adapted to be folded ing, storage, and transportation.
forming a flatbundle convenient for pack- The inventionis satisfactorily illustrated in' the 'accompanying drawing, .but the important instrumentalities thereof may bev varied, and so it is to be understood that the invention is not limited to ,the specific arrangement and organization shown and described.
Figures 1 and 2 represent perspective views of opposite faces of a sign embodying my invention. Fig.3 represents a'rear view of the sign and its support, the latter in foldedcondition. Fig. 4 represents a central section of the sign in folded condition.
Similar numerals, of reference indicate corresponding parts in the figures.
eferring' to the drawings, 1 designates the'body of the sign, the same being composed of two sheets or leaves of pliable material, such as card or pasteboard, the same being connected by the strip 4 offlexible material whereby said leaves may be opened out as in Figs. 1, 2 and 3, or folded on each other, as in Fig. 4. On the back of the leaf 2 is the le 5 which is secured to said leaf by the flexibfi strip 6 which adapts said leg to be opened out as shown in Fig. 2, forming a prop for sustaining the leaf 2 in co1nparatively upright position as an easel. On the upper end of the leg 5 is the arm 7, which is connected with the former by the flexible strip 8 which adapts said arm to be I raised and placed in comparatively upright posltion, as in Fig. 2, or folded on the leg 5.
and adjacent portion of the back' of the-leaf 2 as in Fig. 3, or between theileaves as in Fig. 4.
On the back of the leaf 3 at a place opposite to the raised arm 7 is the keeper 9 which is composed of members 10 andll of flexible or pliable material creased along the line 12, forming a .hinge, the member 10 being se-,
cured to theleaf 3 while the member 11 may be opened out angularly therefrom as shown in'Fig. 2, or folded flat against said leaf as in Figs. '3 and 4.
In the member 11 is the slit or incision 13 which is adapted to receive the adjacent portion of the arm 7, it being seen that the edge ofsaid arm is inserted in said slit whereby the arm is held in its elevated and comparativelyupright position by said keeper 9, thus retaining the leaf 3 in its operative condition as in Figs. 1 and 2.
It will be seen that the leaf 2 hasprinted thereon, on what may be termed its front face, the simulation of a box of cigars, and the leaf 3 has printed thereon on the corresponding face the simulation of the lid of said box, and when the parts are in the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2, there is presented the appearance of an open box of cigars forming an inexpensive and'suggestive sign which is admirably adapted for advertising purposes.
It is evident that the arm 7 may be withdrawn from the keeper 9 and folded down on the leaf 2 and adjacent portion of the leg 5. The member 11 of the keeper may be folded down on the leaf 3, all as shown in Fig. 3, and the leaves may be folded on each other on the line of the hinge strip 4, with the arm, leg and keeper on the exterior thereof, thus producing the fiat and compact bundle as shown in Fig. 4, which is convenient for carrying, handling, packing, storage, transportation, etc.-, it being noticed that the printed faces of the leaves are within, whereby they are removed from contact with the hands and protected from being scratched or otherwise injured.
Having thus described my invention what emma 1 claim as new and desire to secure bv Let= rop to be turned upward to form a suppert ferLskPfatent, is i d 1 $01' the upper leaf.
