WITNESSES:
. A'TTORNEV unimnn STATES PATENT OFFICE;
GEORGE F. RICH, OF EKANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR 0F ONE-HALF TO WALLA LEVISTON,} OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
SAFETY-BAZOB- Specification of Letters Patent.
Batented Apr. 22,1913.
Application filed December 9, 191,1. Serial No. 684,796.
State of Missouri, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Safety-Razors; and I do declare the following to be a full,
clear, and exact descri tion of the invention,
such as will enable ot ers skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters and figures of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
' My invention relates to safety razors and has for its objectto provide a device of that type which can be adjusted to different an gles, and further in the novel arrangement of parts whereby the blade is held rigidly withm a frame and adapted to produce a diagonal stroke with a straight down pull of the razor handle.
It is a further object of in invention to provide other im roved deta' s of structure hereinafter described and illustrated in the accompanying drawings, wherein: I
Figure I is a perspective view of a safety razor constructe according to my invention,
showing the razor disposed at an angle to the handle. Fig. II is a perspective vlew of the base member, showingthe spring members and lock bolt arranged on sand base member. Fig. III is a perspective view of the guard member showin a plurality of tooth-shaped guards and. t e lug member. Fig. IV is a perspective view of the'base member with the blade inserted in position. Fi V is a central vertical section of my sa et razor with the different parts in assemb ed position, and showing the means for holdingthe razor proper'at any desired an le tothe handle. Y
eferring more in detail to; the parts: 1 designates a basemember which is preferably stamped out of sheet metal and formed with upwardly turned flanges 2, a rearwardly e'xtendedlip 3, and a beveled under facell. Shoulders 4 are disposedbetween the lip member 3 and the endflanges 2 and are adapted to receive the spring members 5, which are secured to the under face of the said base member 1, and bent over and outwardly away from said lip member. The said flanges 2 adjacent the r rear portions are of greater altitude than at their front portions. The flanges, neartheir-front portions, are provided with upward and rearwardl extending lugs 6, formingU-shaped shoul ers 7. The lip memberi3, of the base, is provided with a recess 8, adapted to pivotally seat the bolt 9, which is screw thread ed and adapted for a thumb screw 10. a
The guard member 11 comprises an integral iece of sheet metal provided'on:its lower ont edgewith a plurality of tooth shaped lugs 12 and on its lower side edges with oppositely disposed lugs 13. The guard member 11 is concaved as at 14. adjacent the lowerfront edge, and extends laterally and is convexed as at 15, at which pointit is cut away to form the shoulders 16 and GK". tends rearwardly to form the Ii 17, having a slot 18 at its free edge the s ape of the said curved portions of the guard member conforming to the shape of a razor blade. Rising from the upper edge of the guard member 14 is a stud 19 having an annular groove 22 near its upper end which forms a head 21.
Therhandle 23 has a collar 24 projecting from one end thereof and has a screw threaded shank 25 projecting throu h a. part of? the collar and from an open en thereof, the free end of the shank being referablyreduced indiameter to form a ocking in as will presently be described. The hand e also comprises a sleeve 26 which is adapted for telescoping within the collar 24 and has a head 27 provided with an opening which is 1 adapted for receiving the head of stud ,19 when ap lied thereto, the sleeve being provided with a base 28 which communicates with the opening and is interiorly screw threaded to carry the screw threaded handle shank 25 so that when the parts are assembled, and the handle is turned to the right,
the shank threads will turn in the collar.
the upper portion of the springs pressln down upon the u per face of the blade an seating same firm y within the base member. The
ard member is then placed on the base a mem r, the lugs 13 seating in the U-shaped 1101 tion of the stud 19 and the handle turned to any desired angle, after which the handle is turned to advance the shank into the stud groove and into binding engagement with the stud.
It is apparent that with a razor of this construction the handle ma be set at any angle to a central cross-section of the blade to secure a desirable cutting angle, and that the adjustment may be quickly andeasily made without removing the handle or disconnecting the blade holders.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by Letters-Patent, is':'-'
1. The combination with blade holding parts comprising-a stud having an annular groove therein, ofla handle comprlslng a sleeve having a head at one end into which said stud is projected, and a movable member having'a shank projected into the groove in said stud and adapted for locking the handle thereon, for the urposeset :forth.
