VETERINARY OBSTETRICAL INSTRUMENT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 22, 1913.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, IsAAc Foors, citizen of the United States residin at Superior, in the county of Nuckolls an State of Nebraska, have invented certain new and usefulImprovements in a Veterinary Obstetrical Instrument, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to veterinary surgery and has special reference to an obstetrical instrument for pigs.
The principal object of the invention is to improve and simplify obstetrical forceps for pigs. v
Another object of'tlie invention is'to provide such forceps with coacting jaws arranged to cause the fetus to lie centrally between tlie -'aws of the forceps, thus preventing acci entalfslipping'froin betweensaid 'aws.
With the above and other objects in view,
as will'be' hereinafter apparent, the invention consists in general incertain novel details of construction andloombinations of parts hereinafter fully: described, llustrated in the accompanying drawing and specifically claimed.
In the accompanyingdrawing like characters of reference indicatelike parts in the several views, and z-Fi re 1 is a side elevation of the device. F1 2 is an enlarged detail side elevation of t e 'aws of the-device. Fig. 8 is an enlarged etail end elevation of said jaws.
This invention consists of a pair of handles 10 terminating in jaws 11. The handles 10 are flattened at 12 and pivotally united by a rivet or the like as at 13. One of the handles 10 is provided with a flattened curved end 14 to prevent the hand of. the operator from slipping when drawing upon the instrument. The jaws 11 are turned toward each other at the ends as shown at 15 and between these ends and the fulcrum 13 are lugs 16 so arranged that a portion ofthe fetus may be grasped between the ends of the jaws and these lugs in such manner that the portion grasped cannot readily slip from between the jaws. Furthermore, the coacting ends and lugs are not only inclined but are provided with a tongue and groove arrangement 19 to prevent one jaw from slipping latcrally of the other during insertion.
In the operation of the device the jaws are closed and inserted into the vagina. Then in position they are opened and moved gently about until the leg of a'fetus is grasped between them, as may be told by the resistance toclosing. They are then gently closed and traction carefully exerted, thus drawing the fetus out.
There has thus been provided a simple and ,efiicient device of the kind described and for the urpose specified.
aving thusdescribed the invention, what is claimed as new, is':-- t In a veterinary obstetrical instrument, forceps having: fulcrumed elongated jaws provided with inturned coactlng ends, and coacting ln s on said aws between said ends and thefu crum, said ends and lugs having their co'acting faces inclined, the faces of the ends being inclined opposite thevfaces of the lugs, said coacting faces being tongued and ooved to prevent lateral movement of the aws during insertion.
In testimony whereof I hereunto afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ISAAC I OOTE.
