LIrn-irnEsEavEaa To all whom it may concern I Be it known that I, ALEXANDER t CSiiEKLi subject of King, of I-Iu1'1gary,= residing, at
Cleveland, Ohio,;have invented new and use-1 'which the following is a specification; I
ful Improvements in Life Preserv'ers, of
The object of my present invention is the provision of a: life preserver, which will have suflicient buoyancy .to. maintain a person afloat for a verylong time, and which will protect the user from the Water, and also will preferably be provided withipockets for holding food, drink,1etc., or any other suitable articles, and which will be light and inexpensiveto make, and take up :but little room onshipboard, when not in use. These. objects I accomplish in the device forming; the subject of my invention.
The accompanying; drawings show one form of device.
In said drawings Figure .1 shows a vertical. section, taken from front to rear, F ig. 2 shows a verticala section :takenatright angles to Fig. 1, Fig. ,3 shows a top plan, the vest or corset part and the cover both beingremoved and Fig. I, illustrates, on a somewhat larger scale, the hinge joint between the. oval frame and the bent seat support.
Referring to the drawings more specifically, I first provide a .frame10 of light. strong material, such as aluminum or steel pipe, oval in shape and to the front and rear ends of this I attach, by hinge joints, 1a bent support 12, of similarmaterial, to whichis attached a seat post :18, which may be: of the shape illustrated or straight, and whichi carries a seat 14. j r
I provide a pair of pantalo0ns,115,made 0 material impervious .towater, such .for :in: stance as fabric impregnated or coated with1 rubber, or other Waterproofing; materiahi which are attached to the frame :10 as described later. These are enlarged at the top; as shown.
I 1 further provide a. pair 1 of long and rather narrow air chambers 16, which give buoyancy to the entire device, which can be filled with air or rany suitable gasby means of the tubes 17,1,provided withvalves. It will be noted that these pair chambers are a long and narrow and are heldin place by the frame lOat the outer edges and are also held in place by strips of fabric 18, whichpass under the support 112.. At the front and rear, these bagsare somewhat wider than at. the middle portion, in order to give more air Specification ofLetters Patent.

space, and consequently more buoyancy to the device. .Ontopof these air chambers 1s a cover 19,also preferably made of wateras maybe necessaryfor the person using the i carrying food, drink. and such other articles device. This cover is provided with a hole for the persons body to enter,
The i an chambers, DflIlttlOOIlSy and cover are all attached to the frame .10 by means of a strip :ofjwaterproofed fabric 21, or
otherwise.
Attachedto'the cover 19 at the opening, therein, is a vest or corset 22, provided withi shoulder straps 23 and a belt 24, which will.
encircle the persons body just below the arms, leavingthe latter free. This vest jor corset i will be provided with buttons 1 or clasps for closing the same practically watert1ght,and the open front is sewn up to near the middle;
The pockets 20 will be provided with suit-. able. flaps to keep out spray etc, for properly preservingthe food etc, therein.
It Willbe seen, that by this device,a pei'- son can keephimself afloat. for a very long time, and by providing a proper amount of food and ;drink, avoid the dangers and discomforts attendant upon the use of the ordi. nary life prcservers.
In my oopending application filed Nov. 8, 1912, Serial No. 730,136, .I have shownz a. frameworln; and seat support similar to those showirin the present application, but in combination: with a different form of flotation means.
1.; A life zpreserver comprising the COIIlbl-r. DZLlZlOIliOf a rigid frame carrying a plurality of impervious air chambers, a rigidseat sup- 7 port hinged to said frame,carry1ng; a seat,
impervious pantaloons attached to said frame, and an impervious cover attached to nation: of a rigid frame carrying a plurality of impervious air chambers, a seat and seat support hinged lto said frame, impervious 1 pantaloons attached to said frame, and ina closing said air; chambers and an impervious 7 cover attached to said frame, capable of preventing the Water from entering said pantaloons, said :cover being provided with v dry pockets. I
3.. A life preserver comprising, the combi-i nation of a ,rlgld oval frame carrylng a pIurahty of lmpervlous alr chambers; a curved videdWith suitable; supporting and fastening means attached tosaid cover.
4. A life preserver comprising thecombination ofa rigid frame carrying a plu-e rality of imperviousair chambers, a rigidlfl seat support carriedbysaid frame, said support carrying a seat and being capable, of
being folded upwardly against said rigid frame, impervious pantaloons attached to said frame, and an impervious cover 'at- 'tached to said frame, capable of preventing water from entering said pantaloons.
In'testimony whereof I have signed my- .name'in the presence of tWo subscribing gwitnesses,*this 11th day of October, 1912..
