JOHNI T; STORY',` OF.NEW`YORK1N. Y.
SEALING DEVICE; FORl BAGS.
To all whom t may concern Be it known thatI,` JOHNl T. STORY, `a citizen of the UnitedStates,1and a resident of New York, county `and State of 1New fYork, have invented a certain new and` useful Improvement in Sealingg Devices 1 for Bags, of which theifollovvingfis aifull. clear, and exact specifi'ation.` i
This invention relates to a class of devices adapted to be used in closing `and securing bags in a closed form and for protecting the bag when the same is to be` opened My inventionzhas for lits `object `primarily to provide a sealingdevice for bagsconsisting` mainly of a plate adapted to be secured upon a bag, and whichis of aiform toipermit the use of a cord in conjunction there` with in ia manner to tightly close the bag for transporting valuables as well as lserving to permitthe seal tobe brokenwithoutdarnag-` ing the bag. j
A further object of the` invention zis to provide means wherebythe bag may beprotected from injury `when a iknife or other edged instrument is employed in opening` the bag. r
A further object iis to provide aidevice for sealing andprotecting bags,` `of a coinpact, efficient and `inexpensive form, which may be made in `various sizes and in differ-` ent shapes `and Which maybe `used in conjunction with bags;` lof various `kindsu Apractical embodiment of the invention is represented in theaccompanying; `draw-` ing forming' a part 'of `this specification in which similar `characters `of lreference indi` cate correspondingparts in all theiviews, the said invention ibeingmoreyfully` de`` scribed hereinafter and thenpointedout in the appended claims.;
In the drawing, Figure `1 is a front viewi of one form of my sealinggdevice,` as ap` plied upon a bag, and "Fig, `2 lis ia vertical; section through theplate land tongue of the device.
The sealing device 110 lhas abody plate 11 and an integrally formed extension plate or tongue 12 both of 'which are adapted to be fastened in any suitable manner,; for :in-1
stance by bolts `or `pins `13 and 14, tot the i Specification of `Letters Patent. Application ledFebruary 12,11912. `Serial No.\67`6,`991.
PatentedAplxZZ,1913;;
12 isapproximately pear-shaped` or roundi so as to provide `laterallyextending shoulders `16 and 17 upon said body plate at its juncture with the tongue.`
In the tonguejl2 `are twoispaeed.parallel1 601` slits 18 andlt) which extend for 1a portion1 of its vertical length `soas to provide three@ strips 20, 21,122." The `strips 20l and 22 are disposed on `a different` relative plane fromi rection, as shown in Fig. 2, Wherebya transverse openlng 23 1s provldedifor the passage therethrough of a flexible element, or cord, l `or piece `of twine, as 24,l and also providing` `a vertically disposed groove `or guide 25 in` the exposed face `of ithe tongue 12 and be` tween `said strips 20and 22.`
When money or valuable articles are placed ini the bagl for safe `transportation the cord 24 iis `passed through the opening 28 and aroundthe upper partof the bag as many times` as desired, andthe cord is `then repeatedly directed around the bag and over 1 the tongue 12adjacent to the shoulderslf` and 17 ofthe body plate 11. The end` or-` tions of the cord is subsequently tied tig tly together, andia tag, or other means of lden-` titication may `be fastened thereto. When the sealed bag has been delivered to the person authorized to open: it,.by directingthe knife blade `or other sharp instrument` along; the guide 25 `of the tongue 12 the cord used for closing the bag may be readilysevered and the bag opened for removal of its contents. Heretofore it :has been the custom to sever the cord` used; for closing bags con` i taining `valuable `artieles at` any convenient i part thereof with the result of having :the bag frequently ripped or damaged so asto be Worthless for future `use.
It Will beobvious that by means of my device, thebag` may be secured in a closed form and; readily opened by means ofia` knife or `other sharpledged instrument.`
In the `foregoing description I haveiemf` bodied the preferred formof my invention, but I do not wish toibe understood as limiti ing myself thereto,as I am aware that modil-` i fications may i be `made therein Without; dei parting from the principle orl sacricingjany of` the` advantages ofi thisinvention, therei fore I reserve tol myself the ri ht` to make i suchchanges as fairly fall 'withln the scope thereof.`
Having thus deseribedlmyinvention,1,I l
`the strip 21 by being curved inopposite idif 65` olaimasj new and desire to secure by Letters Patent l. The combination With abag, of` plate kof the bag,4 substantially as shownand described. y 4
2. The combination Wit-ha bag,of a plate,
Ineansi'or securing theplate to the bag, said plate having threeintegrally formed strips,. l
pieslf this paiieilt` inay'b obtained for Lfive-cents` each, by addressing the fricommissoner of :Patenta-` Washington, I). C.
a central strip bentl inwardly, and .tWoside strips bent outwardly from the bag, Wherebynapassage. is formedfor a cord, anda cord seated in the passagel and adapted tov bev passed around the bagand secured above the plate sothat a knife,` may be passed beneath the said cord to open the.bagfvvithout` injury to the bag, `substantially as shown and. described.
i This speoication signed and` witnessed`
