Be it knowh that l', (Z ARLES M. BARTLETT,

a citizen of the United States, residing at Lynchbur'g, in the county of Campbell and State of Virginia, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Buckles, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to new and useful improvements'in buckles and has for its object to construct an exceedingly simple and effective device of this character for use with harness or other straps, it being especially adapted for use with package tics, permitting the strap to be readily and quickly loosened or tightened to any degree without havingto look, feel for or make holes in said strap, and when said strap is tightened it will remain so until released.

A further object of the invention is to produce a buckle which will be simple in construction, strong and durable and inexensive in the cost of manufacture, and one in which a strap co-acti-ng therewith will not require holes, which holes are often in the wrong place and also weaken the strap at the points where they are made.

A further object of the invention is to rovide a buckle with which the strap may e brought into engagement at any point along said strap which is adjacent the buckle without the necessity of placing or threading the end of said strap through a portion of the buckle.

With these ends in view, this invention consists in the details of -construction. and combination of elements hereinafter set forth and then specifically designated by the claim.

in order thzit those skilled in the art to which this invention appertains may understand how to make and use the same, I will describe its construction in detail, referring by letter to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, in which- Figure 1 is a face View of the blank from which the frame of the buckle is made. 6. li ith the free ends of the end bars are formed the ears 7, and when formed from sheetmetal as here shown, the slot 8 is out between said cars and the end bars and these ears are then turned up on the dotted line 9 forming bearings for the different shafts, each (if-said ears having a hole 10 produced therein for the reception of said shafts.

With the side bar 5 is formed the flange 11 which is bent upon the dotted line 12 and this flange carries two holes 13 which are in elinement with the holes 10 and receive the opposite ends of the shafts as will be hereinafter described. In Figs. 2 and 3 this flange and the ears are plainly shown when in their turned up positions and in the hole in one of the ears and one of the holes in the flange is mounted the shaft 14. carrying the tongue 15 which is formed of a single piece of metal bent at 16 to form a contact member or portion 17 and parallel arms 18. With the contact member is formed the lip 19 which acts as a fin erlift and which is flat when in the blank, but in'fomning is bent forward and with the contact member 17, the outer face of whichis angular, forms a stop to prevent the passage of the tongue past the roughened roller 20, which roller is mounted upon a shaft 21in the other holes 10 and 13.

It will be understood. that this buckle may be fastened upon one strap and have another strap to coact therewith, but in order to facilitate the description I will describe the buckle as beingfastened to a single str. 2.2, one end of said strap being looped u out one of the end bars 4 as shown at 23. The opposite end of the strap would then pass ver the roller and the tongue will force the strap against said roller, securely holding it in place. This form of my buckle is espe- I cially adapted for use as a package tie since encd or tightened to any degree. The package being ready for tying, the strap is passed about the same and inserted through the passageavay 6 in the frame and bri'mght into engagement with the roller. The tongue is then dropped into position and the backward strain upon the strap will draw said tongue tight against one face of the strap, holding the some tight between the tongue and roller. Because of the roller :1 package may be gradually made smaller and the trap adjusted without dragging it across a rough surface which would wear such the strap may be readily and quickly loosstrap out. To remove the strap, the finger is inserted beneath the lip 19 andthe tongue drawn away from the strap, permitting the same to be removed.

Of course I do not wish to be limited to the exact details of construction as here shown,.'as these may be varied within the limits of the appended claim without departing from the spirit of my invention,

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, is

A buckle comprising a substantially U shaped frame stamped from sheet metal to provide a base port-ion and spaced'arms a wall on said base portion provided wlth spaced openings and adapted to reinforce t e frame, the free terminals of the arms ex tending inwardly and backwardly to lie within the frame, said free terminals of the arms also being bent out of the plane of the" frame to prov de ears having openings to registerqwith those in said wall, shafts 'journaled in the openings in said ears and wall and spaced from the spaced arms aforesaid, and strap gripping means on said shafts.
