JOSEPH H. GAY, OF NEWARK, NEW JERSEY.
HIDE-SPLIT'IING MACHINE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 25, 1912.
Patented Apr. 15, 1913.
Serial N 0. 699,788.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH H. GAY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Hide-Splitting Machines, of which the following is a specification.
In another application for Letters Patent, Serial No. 671,021, filed by me January 13, 1912, I have described a hide-splitting machine, wherein the spring roll is eliminated and a plurality of presser blocks substituted therefor, disposed in line side by side across the machine, each block having a rounded lower edge which may be struck on an arc of much shorter radius than that of the ordinary spring roll. A web of canvas or other strong fabric, preferably endless and suitably driven, travels under the lower edges of the block, and the hide is drawn in to the knife by means of said web coacting with a traveling support for the hide. By reason of the short radius of edge curvature of the blocks, the clearance space between belt and support may be made of such a predetermined width as will permit the knife edge to be brought so close to the maximum line of compression of the hide that the intervening distance between said line and said knife will be practically nothing. Hence there is no chance for the hide to buckle between compression line and knife, and straight and uniform splits are produced.
My present device 1s an improvement in the construction of the presser blocks aforesaid, and has for its object to diminish the friction between the web and the block, by the provision of an edge roll, having an elastic support or cushion disposed within the body of the block.
In the accompanying drawingsFigure 1 is a vertical section of one of the presser blocks and associated parts, showing-my device. Fig. 2 is a front elevation of the same.
Similar numbers of reference indicate like parts, and parts corresponding to like parts 1n my aforesaid Letters Patent are here slmilarly numbered. 4
At 1, 1 are shown the end frames of the machine, between which are supported the truss frame 2 and the usual gage roll 3 which supports the hide during its movement to the knife 9. The truss frame 2 carries a number of presser blocks 21, vertically adjustable by the rods 23, as described in my said patent. On the lower side of each block is a recess 37. Said recesses are in line, and receive an elastic cushion here in the form of a rubber roll 38.
The lower edges of blocks 21 may be beveled inwardly, and to said edges are bolted arms 40, having concavities in their ends to receive between them a metal edge roll 41, of suit-ably small diameter so as to aflord clearance for the knife, in the same way as provided by the actual edge of the said presser block set forth in my aforesaid patent. The endless belt or web 33 passes under roll 41, which roll in turn bears against the elastic cushion roll 38. The hide is drawn in to the knife by thecoaction of said web andthe gage roll 3.
The edge roll 41 may be of resilient wire which will yield upwardly to inequalities in the hide and be permitted to do so by the elastic cushion 38. Because said roll 1 extends continuously across the joints between the blocks 21, any marking of the hide by said joint-s is prevented. In case of injury or wear, the roll 11 can be easily removed and a new roll substituted.
I claim:
1. A hide-splitting machine of the type set forth, comprising a transverse support recessed on its under side, an elastic cushion in said recess, a roll disposed below said cushion, means on said support for preventing lateral displacement of said roll, and a traveling web passing under said roll.
2. A hide-splitting machine of the type set forth, comprising a plurality of presser blocks disposed in line, each of said blocks having a recess in its under side, an elastic roll seated 1n sald recesses, an edge roll disposed below said elastic roll' and bearing thereon, means on said blocks for preventing lateral displacement of said edge roll, and a traveling web passing under said edge roll. In testimony whereof I have aflixed my signature in presence of two witnesses.
JOSEPH H. GAY.
