SADDLE FOR THE TOP ROLLS OF SPINNING-MACHINES.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 355,981, dated January 11, 1887.
Application filed April 9, 1885. Serial No. 161,735. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Onnsrnn AMMIDO'WN DREssER, of Southbridge, IVorcester county, Massachusetts, have invented a new and use ful Improvement in Saddles for the Top Rolls of Spinning-Machines, of which the following is such a full, clear, and exact description aswill enable others skilled in the art to practice the same.
My invention'relat-es to that class of sad dles used on the upper rolls of cotton-drawing machines, which enables the making of the weight on the middle top roll adjustable from nothing to any desired proportion of the entire weight which is not sustained by the front roll, whereby one and the same machine is adapted for working material having staples of any lengths. 4
My invention consists in forming the saddle of a yoke which bears at its heel upon the front roll, a shoe which bears upon the middle and rear rolls, and a toe secured adjustably to the under side of the yoke, so as to be movable thereon toward and from the point from which the weight is suspended, substantially as hereinafter set forth.
In order that the invention may be better understood, I will proceed to describe it with reference to the accompanying drawings, in which- FigureI is a transverse section of the rolls of a cotton-drawing machine and an elevation of the saddle in position thereon, to-
gether with the weight. Fig. II is a plan view of the parts of the saddle separated. Fig. III is an elevation of the saddle under a slight modification. Fig. IV is a plan view showing the parts of the saddle of modified form separated. Fig. Vis a perspective view of the adjustable toe of modified construction.
F represents the yoke of the saddle, which bears at its heel upon the .upper one of the front rolls, and from which is suspended a weight, H, through the medium of a rod, 6.
F* is the shoe, which bears upon the top rolls of the middle and rear pairs, and F is the toe, which is secured adj ustably to the under side of the yoke F. This may be accomplished in any desired manner, one simple means he- 50 ing a screw, F threaded into the toe and working in a longitudinal slot cut through the yoke. By this means the toe may be adjusted toward or from the point from which the Weight is suspended, and by so doing all of that portion of the weight not sustained bythe front roll may be distributed in any desired proportions between the middle and rear rolls.
It will be seen that when the toe is moved nearer the vertical plane of the axes of the middle rolls, the amount of weight sustained by said middle rolls will be increased in the same proportion as the amount of weight on the rear rolls is decreased, and vice versa. This enables theshifti'ng of all of that portion of 6 5 the weight not sustained by the front rolls onto the middle rolls or all onto the rear rolls, or the distribution of it between them in any desired proportions.
The toe and shoe are held against lateral 7o. displacement relatively to each other by overlapping. This may be accomplished by forming a mortise in the top side of the shoe within which the toe fits, as shown in Figs. I and II, or by forming downward projectionston the sides of the toe which embrace the shoe on its respective opposite sides, as shown in Figs. III, IV, and V.
Having thus described my invention, the following is what I claim as new therein and desire to secure by LettersPatent:
1. The combination, with the rolls, of a yoke resting at its heel upon the top roll of one of the outer pairs, a shoe resting upon the top rolls of the middle and the other outer pair, an adjustable toeiiiterposed between said yoke and shoe and the weight suspended from said yoke, substantially as and for the purposes set forth. l
2. The combination, with the rolls, ofa yoke resting at its heel upon the top front roll, a shoe resting upon the respective top rolls of the middle and rear pairs, a toe secured adjustably to the under side of said yoke, said toe and shoe beingprovided with overlapping 9 5 portions, substantially as described, and the weight suspendedfrom the yoke, substantially 3 as set forth.
3. The combination, withthe rolls, of ayoke resting at its heel upon the top roll of the front pair and having a longitudinal slot there- The foregoing specification of myinvention through a shoe resting upon the respective signed by me this 31st day of March, A. D. top rolls of the middle and rear pairs, a toe 1885. interposed between said yokeand shoe, ascrew I CHESTER AMMIDOWN DRESSER.
5 passed through said slot and engaging said 'W'itnesses:
toe, and the weight suspended from the yoke, WINFIELD S. KILToN, substantially as and for the purpose set forth. HENRY B. DREssER.
