CROSS-RAIL-SECURING DEICE FOR MACHINE-TOOLS.
Specification of'Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 15, 1913.
' Application tiled January 3, 1911.` Serial No. 609,618.
'To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD P. BULLARD,.
Jr.. citizen ofthe United States, and resident of Bridgeport', in the county of Fairfield -and State of Connecticut, Ahave in-.
vented certain new and usefull Improve.- ments in Cross-Rail-Securing Devices for Machine-Tools, of which the following is a.
specification.
This invention relates to metal working machinery of the machine tooltype, and
particularly to improvements in that class of machinesknown as boring mills, maxian adjustable cross rail for sup-porting the il l) tool head above the tables. Heretofore in this sort of machines ithas been common to support. a pair of columns on the 4two opposite side portions of the lbase and to the rear ofthe center of the work carrying table, and
to provide a way in the vertically finished faces of these two columns for adjustably supporting the cross rail in position. These tivoI simports adjoining the end portionsv of the rail. so far as l know., have heretofore constituted the sole support for the rail. and as the head carried bythe rail is usually positioned intermediate of these points when in operation it does not stand perfectly rigid but will vibrate more or less according to lthe work being performed and the yieldability of the rail. I therefore find it particularly desirable, in the present require--V ments of a machine of this class, where high grade steel is to be operated' upon and where' rapid `production is an essential feature,
that both the head and its rail be rigidly po.
sit-ioned, which l have accomplished by providing an improved form of column made of4 a single piece, constituting the upper 'frame work of the machine and including two vertical faced ways for the attachment.
of the rail and by providing a third. con-I nection for the rail with the intermediate portion of this column. and which like the side connections is made adjustableto permit the rail to be raised and lowered as desired.
On the accompanying drawings forming av part of this specification similar characters of reference Will be found to designate like eral figures and of which- 'Figure'L showsan incomplete side View of the main parts of a boring mill and including my improved form of column cross rail and intermediate support therefor. Fig; 2, is a rear view* of the construction or corresponding parts throughout the sevthe machine shown in Figs. 1 and 2. Fig. 4l; is a plan view of Fig. ,3. Fig. 5. shows an enlarged detail cross sectional view of the in- 'termediate connection of rail .and column heretofore referred 'to'. I
l Referring in detail to the 'characters of reference marked upon the drawings 10 indicates the base of the machine and upon the forward portion of which is operatively and which features ma)v obviouslvbe of any preferred or well known tvpe and adapted to be fitted with an \v preferred form of driving connections, notshown; Upon'the rear and raisedportion of thel base is mounted my improved form of column l2 and which as will be noted includes side portions 13 central portion lof the-rail and extends into the concave face portion Aof the colmnm and upon -the central portion of this enlargement I. provide an extended 'post 21 that projects rearward and against` the face of the web of the colunmadjoining the slot 18 before mentioned. The threaded end of the T bolt exi tends'through a portion of this post and is provided with a nut which may be gotten at through the side opening and beltightcned or loosened for the purpose of clamping' or releasing the post and rail from the column as occasion requires. The column is furtherformed with a central rear space Q4 intermediate of the side portions and having vertically disposed faces 1'l lwith ment i2() is formed on the rear side of the' shown in Fig. 1. Fig. 3, is a front view of mounted the rotary work carrying table 11.
l web to receive motor or other driving medium for oper ting the machine. I also l torni pockets 25 in each of the side portions of the column to receive Weights, not shown, which are used to counterbalance `the head :26, a nd which may be of any preferred con#- ,515 structio s. rI`his feature ofa single piece |column hen employed in connection with a rail having an intermediate third connection with the 'colunnn'produces exceptionally stitf and rigid rail ywhen clamped in position, thus insuring rigidity to the head an accuracy of operation of its tools fupon the Work carried by the tablel Therefore, the invent-ion is considered to he highly important anld'essential for the production of a first c'la'ss machine of this kind.
' Having 'thus described my invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent isi 1. In a mae ine tool of the: class described,
3 0 tlie combitialon with -a base, of a column mounted thereon and including integral side members lia-ving vertical ways andan integ'ral non-movable Web portion with a vertical slot therein connecting the sides, a
3 5 clross rail adjustaibly mounted upon the Ways lof the side membersA and adjustably connected to the slot in the web of the column.
2. In a machine tool of the class described, the combinationv with a, base, of a' column A40 mouited vthereon andI formed of a single piece and including side portions( and a nonmov'able Web-connecting the same and hav ing a vertically disposed guide slot therein, /a rail ad-jiis'tably secured to the face of the 5 side portions-land having a t-hir'd connection intermediate of said rail and slot of the'web whereby .the central portion of the rail is rigidly secured tothe said web.
. 3. In a machine tool of the class described,
Which obviously is not only cheaper to make,
the combination 'with' a bade, of a column mounted thereinand including-'side standards and a movable cross portion' with a vertical slot arranged in said cross portion, a vertically adjustable rail secured to the face of the side portilons and having an in termediat'e rearwardly extended part to engage theslot. in the fixed cross portion of the column. and au adjust'able connection intermediate of the said rearwardly extend ed part ot' the rail aud the slot of the cross portion ot' the column which permits the rail to be securely clamped to dilterent portions ot' the said cross portion.
l. In a machine' tool of the class described` the combinatioi with a base, of a column comprising side portions having vertically arranged ways on their faces and a concave cross portion h'aving a vertically and een trally lirianged slot therein, a cross r'ail ad. justably secured to the ways of the side por tions of the column and having au enlargementon its rear side intermediate ot the faces of the side columns, a bolt carried! iu an extension of the enlargement and adapted to engage the slot ot the cross portion and designed to be clamped in ditierent positions with the vertical adjustment ot the Fall. i
lu a machine tool ot' the class described, the combination with a base. ot' a column mounted thereon and including .side standards and a nou-movable intermediate criiss po-rtioii having a vertical slot therein. a vertically adjustable cross raillsecured to thc face ot' the 'standards and to the .slot iu the intermediateA non-movable, cross portion. means for clamping said intermediate portion ot the crosstrail to the said slotted cross` portion, and a horizontally adjnstabletool ca'rr 'ing saddle mounted upon the said rail.
Signed at Bridgeport iu the cminty of Fairfield and Stateof Connecticut this .)Si'h day, ot llecember A. 11,1910.
