ATTACHMENT FOR PLANERS.

To all whom it may concern:
l stationary bed plate lEL has grooves 1d to cole it known that I, HENRY HUGH Mon'- I operate with the tracks le on the sliding bed GAN, residing at Tvloodlawn, in the county of J eiierson and State of Alabama, haveY invented certain new and usefull Improvements in Attachments for Planers, ot which the fcllowing is a specification.
My invention relates to `certain new and useful improvements in attachments forV planing machines and the lilre andA it primarily seeks to provide an attachmentwhich will enable the ordinary planing machine to plane circular arcs and more especially enable such machine to plane and cut out links for locomotives and the like.
My improved planer includes a bed plate adapted to be attached to the bed plate of the planer, a tace plate carried by the bed plate to which the article operated upon is adapted to be secured, a supporting arm attached to the planer which carries a guide that has a slideway to cooperate with a corresponding member on an arm attached to the face plate so that as the bed plate of the planer is reciprocated the face plate of the attachment will be turned on its center so that the stationary cutting tool can operate upon the work to cut a surface of a circular arc form. i
My invention also embodies certain detailed. features of construction, all of which will be first described in detail and then be speciiically pointed out in the appended claims reference being had to the accompanying drawings, in which Figure l, is a perspective view of planer embodying my invention. Fig. 2, is a top plan view thereof. Fig. 3, is a central, vertical, longitudinal section on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2. Fig. 4, is a detail perspective view of the bed plate of the attachment. Fig. 5, is a similar view of the face plate and its arm. Fig. 6, is a detail perspective view of the guide arm or support. Fig. 7, is an enlarged detail view showing the manner of graduating the slotted guide.
Referring now to the accompanying` drawy ings in whichlike letters and numerals of reference indicate like parts in all the figures, 1 designates the planer which may beof the ordinary construction and embodies the sta-V tionary bed plate la and the vertical supports 1b that are connected by the tool carrying slideway 1C in the ordinary manner. The
plate if which is adapted to reciprocate along the stationary bed plate 'ifhe tool carriage 2, which may be of any approved construction, is mounted on the slideway lC and is adjustablelthereon in the usual manner, the tobi Zabeing feedable by a screw 2b.
3 designates a part of my attachment which is the guide arm that may be secured to any stationary part of the planer, but is preferably secured to the tool receiving bar i@ by the clamp 3a and set screw 3b, as indi,n cated, the arm 3 terminating in an apertured eye portion 3C, through which a bolt 4+ passes, a washer 41a being interposed between the bolt head and the eye 3C for the usual pur poses.
`5 designates the guide bar which has a slideway 5a, on its under tace and a graduated dial portion 5b to cooperate with the eye portion 3c oi' the arm 3, a suitable indicating mark 3x being provided thereon for that purpose. The eye portion 3C is also provided with a pair of slots 3y to receive the set screws 5y on the guide 5 to lock the guide in its various adjusted positions.
G'designates the bed plate oi' my attachment, which bed plate is securable to the movable bed plate 1f of the planer and in its preferred iormthe attachment bed plate 6 is of circular shape and provided with an annular groove @a into which the clamping plates 6b project, the clamping plates 6b being secured to the bed plate 1f of the planer by bolts and nuts 5C, as indicated.
6d designates a circular dove-tailed portion formed in .the upper surface of the attachment bed plate 6 to receive the correspondingly'formed ulcrum member 7a of the `tace plate 7 which forms a part of my at- `tachment, and in order to get the pivot portion 7 a of such face plate into the dove-tailed circular portion 6d oi the bed plate 6 of my attachment, l provide a removable portion '6e on said bed plate which is normally held through Which the bolt 12 passes, the bolt l2 its free end is formed with an eye portion l l,
vat one end carrying a swiveled bridge member 12ad to which a pair et spaced friction rollers l2b are secured and the bolt 12 is held in place on the face plate arm ll by the mits 12C, as indicated. The friction rollers l2b project into the slotted portion 51t of the guide bar 5 and cooperate therewith.
ln the practical arrangement of my invention, the pivot center' of the guide 5 and that of the tace plate 7 lie in the central vertical plane of the movable bed plate lf oi the planer so that When the guide 5 lies in alinement with such central plane and the movable bed plate if is reciprocated in the usual manner, no rotary movement is imparted to the face plate 7 et my attachment, but when the guide 5 set at an angle to such central plane et the planer, then a corresponding rotary or oscillating motion is imparted to the tace plate 7 as the movable bed plate lf of the planer is reciprocated and the degree of such oscillation will vary in proportion to the angle to which the guide 5 is adjusted.
In the practical application of my invention, the bed plate o el' my attachment is bolted down securely to the movable bed plate if ot' the planer, and the arm 3 secured in place, after which the guide 5 and the arm l l are cooperatively connected and the guide set the proper angle. rThe Work l() to be operated upon is then clamped to the face plate 7 of the attachment and the power applied to reciprocate the bed plate l", it being understood that the tool 2 is adjusted as may be desired to operate upon the Work l0. As the bed plate l" is reciprocated the proper motion is imparted to the face plate oi my attacl'mient with the result that as the Work comes into operative relation with the tool, the cut desired will be made, as will be readily understood from the dran/ings.
From the foregoing description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawings, it is thought the complete constructioi'i, operation and numerous advantages of my invention Will be readily understood by those l skilled in the art to which the invention appertains.
lVhat I claim is:
l. An attachment for Jlaners comprising a bed plate securable to t 1e reciprocating bed of the planer, an adjustable guide having a slideivay, a tace plate pivotally connected with the bed plate and cooperatively connected with the guide, said cooperative connection with the guide including` an arm secured to the face plate, a bridge member pivotally connected with the arm and eoi'ipcratively connected with said guide.
2. An attachment tor planers comprising a bed plate securable to the recipiocating` bed of the planer, an adjustable guide having a slideway, a face plate pivotally connected with the bed plate and cooperatively connected with the guide, said cooperative connection with the guide including an arm secured to the face plate, a bridge member pivotally connected with the arm and cooperatively connected with said guide, a lixed frame for supporting said guide, and means for pivotally connecting said guide to said iixed frame.
3. An attachment tor planers comprising a bed plate securable to the reciprocating bed of the planer, an adjustable guide having a slideway, a face plate pivotally connected with the bed plate and cooperatively connected With the guide, said cooperative connection with the guide including an arm secured to the tace plate, a bridge member pivotally connected with the arm and coopera tively connected with said guide, a iixed frame for supporting said guide, means for pivotally and adjustably connecting said guide to said lixed trame, said connection including a portion having a graduation to cooperate with graduations on said guide to indicate the position of the guide with relation to said connecting means.
