Description

G. T. YOUNG.
COMBINED RULER ANDBLOTTBR.
APPLICATION FILED AUG. 21, 191.2

A TTURNEY To all whom t 'may concern:
CHARLES T. YOUNG, OF HILLSBORO, OREGON.
COMBINED RULER AND BLOTTER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 8, 1913.
Application filed August 21,` 1912. Serial No. 716,310.
Be it known that I, CHARLES T. YOUNG, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Hillsboro, county of Washington, and State of Oregon, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Combined Rulers and Blotters, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to combined rulers and blotters.
My main object is to provide a device which will be of convenience to clerks or anyone engaged in work requiring the drawing of straight lines in ink.
Another principal feature of my invention is the providing of a ruler adapted for having a blotter readily attached to it, and at the same time leaving the ruler perfectly flexible.
I attain my object and incidental features by the device illustrated in the drawing, in which- Figure l is a perspective view of my device; Fig. 2 is a plan view of the flexible strip which serves as a binder between the blotter and the ruler; Fig. 3 is an end eleva tion, on a larger scale, without the blotter and binding strap previously Ireferred to; Fig. 4 is a perspective view of a portion of the blo-tter showing the form to which the latter is to be folded before it can be attached to the ruler; and Fig. 5 is a vertical, transverse section of the device taken approximately on the line 5 5 of Fig. l, and looking in the direction indicated by the arrow.
In the drawings, the ruler consists of two parallel straight-edge members a and a, each having its outside edge graduated so that such edges may be used in the same manner as the edges of an ordinary ruler. The straight-edge members a and a are connected by a plurality of bow shaped arms o, b', and b2, which rigidly hold said straight-edge members slightly spaced apart from each other, as more clearly shown in Fig. 3J The blotter LZ is folded to the form shown in Fig. 4, after which the portions d, d2 are inserted in the space between the two straight-edge members a, a, the portions d3, Z4 will lie under the connecting arms b, b', b2, and the portion Z5 will cover the bottom surfaces of the ruler, which features are more clearly shown in Fig. 5.
The flexible strip, c, made with narrower ends c and c5, and a wider section c2 having a length equal to the distance between the arms o and b2, is inserted under the bow arms. This latter is done in the following manner: The end c of the strip is slipped under the arm b and the arms Z), till the shoulders 03 of said strip abut against the sides of the arm b. The enlarged section c2 is then bent up till the end c5 can be inserted under the arm b2. The resiliency of the strip will then force the shoulders o* against the sides of the arm b2. y
The elastic qualities of the material composing the ruler and the strip c are such that the` device may b e bent readily in either direction so as to conform withthe curved surface of a book, without displacing any of the parts which go to make up the device. In the bending of the ruler over a curved surface ,of a book the `ruler and blotter, as apparent, would have some relative independent movement which permits the use of my device over a curved surface; and the parts will of course resume theiry normal relative positions when'used upon a straight surface.
I claim:
l. A combined ruler and blotter, comprising two parallel straighteedge members, longitudinally flexible; a longitudinally folded blotter sheet means for securing the blotter on the ruler, said means adapted to permit the blotter to have relative longitudinal movement on the straight-edge members, so as to accommodate the longitudinal bending of the latter.
2. A combined ruler and blotter, comp-rising two parallel straight-edge members, longitudinally flexible; bow-arms connecting said members spaced apart; a longitudinally folded blotter sheet having portions inserted under said bow-arms; a strip of resilient material removably inserted under the bowarms over the blotter portions lying under the bow-arms' and` means for p-re- .venting the longitudinal displacement of said strip.
3. A combined ruler and blotter, comprising two parallel straight-edge members, longitudinally flexible; bow-a-rms connecting said members spaced apart; a longitudinally folded blotter sheet having portions inserted under said bow-arms; astrip of resilient material removably inserted under the bow-arms over the blotter portions lying under the bow-arms; said strip formed with shoulders adapted for engagement with said bow-arms, thereby preventing the longitudinal displacement of said strip.
4. A combined ruler and blotter, comprising tWo vparallel straight-edge members, longitudinally flexible; bow-arms connecting said members spaced apart; a longitudinally folded blotter sheet having portions inserted under said bow-arms; a strip of resilient material removably inserted under the bow-arms over the blotter portions lying under the bow-arms.
5. A combined ruler and blotter, comprising two parallel straight-edge members, longitudinally flexible; bow-arms connecting said members spaced apart; a longitudi- 15 nally folded blotter sheet inserted between said straight-edge members, having portions lying under said bow-arms, and a portion covering the bottom Jface of the ruler; a strip of resilient material removably inserted under the boiv-arms over the blotter portions lying` under the bow-arms; whereby said blotter sheet is removably secured in,
