to enable the brush, when not inuse, to be supported from one side of a paint can so as to prevent the iminersing of the brush in the paint and also adapted 'for use as a finger piece to facilitate the gripping ot' the brush by the hand when using the brush, the ob- Iiect of my'invention being to provide an improved vdevice of this character which is exceedingly cheap and simple, is very efficient in operation and which may be readily attached tothe handle of an ordi nary paint or other brush.
The invention consists in the construction,
lcombination and arrangement of devices hereinafter described and claimed. v
'in the Aaccoinpanying draWings: -I4`igure l is a vertical sectional view of a paint brush provided with an improved hook con structed in accordance with my invention, showing the hook employed for hanging the brush from one side ofthe paint can, another position et the hook being indicated in dotted lines. Fig. 2 is a transverse sectional view of the saine on the plane indicated by the line o--c of Fig. '1. Fig. 3 1s a vertical Sectional vievv of a. modifiedA form'- of my invention, showing the hook ernployed for hanging the b rush from one side of the paint can. liig. is is a detallsectlonal view on the plane indicated by the line b-b of Fig. Fig. 5 is a detail perspective View of the hook. i i
For the purposes of this specication, show a paint brush. l -ot ordinary form7V which is provided vvith a handle 2. The' handle is provided lin accordance with my invention, With a transverse opening 3 and also with a vertical recess l which is in one side of the handle and which communicates 'with the opening 3. An opening 5 which intersects the opening 3 also extends through the brush handle.
My improved hook is made from a singie piece of Wire or other like materlal or Specification of Letters atent.

' suitable' gage Which is bent to form a bill 7 and a U-shaped arm 8 which extends from the upper end ort the bill and. at right angles thereto, the said U-shaped arm comprising the member 9 which forms a continuation of the bill andthe terminal, member l0, the
latter being parallel Withthe member 9 and terminating short of the bil f The U-shaped arm 8 of the hook extends through and is yslidably arranged in ,the opening 3. When the hook is moved to one posltlon, 'the ar1n`8 projects from one side of the brush handle and the bill 7 o1" the hook isl received'in the' recess 4. The arm 8, when the hook is thus' arranged, forms a linger-piece which materially facilitates the grasping and using of the brush. By pushing in the arm 8, the bill of the hook may be rprojected from one side of the brush handle land used to engage one side 'of a palint'can as at Z1 and hang the brush from said side of the can so as to keep the brush from being submerged in the paint When the brush' is not 1n use. To prevent the hook from becoming casually detached from the brush handle, l provide a pin l1 which is passed through the openingr and between the members 9`-l0 of the Ushaped arm of the hook. n
In Figs. 3 and 4f, show a modified form ,of my lnventio-n which is especially adapted foruse in connection with van oval or round brush l2. In this forni of the invention, the U-shaped arm 13 or' the hook lelpasses through and is movable in an 'opening 15 inthe handle of the brush, at a point. iznrne diately above the brush head and the shorter member '16 of the U-shaped arin is on the upper side of the longer member thereofand terminates short of the bill 17, the bill extending down at one side of the brush head and being movable toward and from'. the side of the brush head by adjusting the U-sha'ped arm in the opening in the handle.
To retainthe hook on the'head of the brush, I
I preferably employ astaple 18 which is arranged astride the longer lower member oi" the Ufshaped arm and "is driven into the head or upper end ot' the brush. The upper portion of this staple is arranged in the path of the upper member 16 of the 1-shaped arm-and., hence, coacts with the end of said member toforni a stop to limit the outward movement of the hook, the bill ot the hook` by.'hearing against the slide of theihrush head Serving to 'limit the inward or opposite movement of the hook.
When the bill of the hook is arranged direetly against one side of the brush heed,
.the U-sheped arm of the hook forms a linger piece to facilitate the grasping and manipulation ofthe brush. By pushing in the U- shaped arm the hill of the Ahook may he projected from one side of the brush head and arranged parallel with and spaced therefrom and employed to engage one side efe bent ezm'and hang the brush from the Side of the con to keep the brush from being` f suhmergedin the paint when thebrush is not in use.
