"llii's, invention'ielates to Urenades ro` jected' from small` arms, and itsobject isto utilize the safety device, which is provided on such a grenade forretaining thepereussive plunger, for Vthe further purpose .of
initiating the operation of a timeviis, pro-V vided on the grenade. i lt has been foiind', that small arm grenades,
whichliitherto have. been fitted Withpercus. sion `i'iises onli do not always operate etiectively or-even fail entirely especially When` the grenades strike upon soft or marsliy ground, and in order to insure tliemeperetion of the grenades.- in all circumstances, or even 'to 'cause an 'explosion thereof 'in the air ebovethe object, the grenades according to the present invention 'are tt'e'd .with time lures, whicli'are set in act-ion at themoinent of discharge-ofthe' grenade. v
iin-'accordance -Withtheinvention, a device is employed'foiistar'ting the 'time fuse,"
which Yhas already "been provided on gre naties for preventing the permissive 'plunger accidentally or prematurely moving fornerd eigainst'tlie-` priming of the grenade, :md this safety .device isiso combined-With toe igniting-'device of the. time fuse, that on pi ejection of the grenade the safety device for the percussion plunger thereof, positively sets this igniting device in action.
v A constructiona'l 'formof the sub3ect of theinvention is illustrate-d' on the accom-'- pzi'nying drawing, in vwhich Figure l.' is a longitudinal section, and a, side elevation, in which a strip` is used Aas a safety" device .foif' the .percussive plunger, which strip .on projection of the grenade "remains hanging on the barrel of the small arm and thereby releases the perciissive plunger forV causing ignition on im- 'ac-t,
p ln this drawing, @indicates the body of. the grenade, i5 the bursting charge thereof, c the detonator and d a percussion cap', by means ofwhicli the ignition of the bursting-charge is initiated on impact off the gremide; e is the Y pereussive plunger of the gre- .n'sde and f the safety device for the latter which iii the illustrated example consists a dat, strip, which; with its ii'i'clos i hoollied .eind g engages over the permissive plunger, 'end *v'vitli its forked rear end formed :is1inwardly. directed lioolrs fi, engagesV around' `the base of the foresight o ofthe small arm and there-by lretains the percussive plunger .e until progeetionot the grenade. The guide-rod of the grenade is denoted'by. by means of which it is inserted in thebarrel of the small arm, and is a protective casing, ttor protecting the safety.' device of the percussive plunger against accidental or unintentional actus-- tion.'
The base of thcgrenade in accordance with theinventiom-is fitted with a time fuse, 'which in the known manner consistsof tivo mutually lrota'seble priming rings m,=whieh .in accordance 'with their-relative positions pro vide :i longer or shorter priming channel. The priming rings surround the per vided With :i friction igniter n for the ignition of the priming ofthe time fuse. In the simplest forni of econstruetion, illustrated, this igniter consists of a friction 'wire n, Which is embedded in a'sniall tube filled with-'friction priming and coupled to the safety strip fot the permissive plunger. In the illustrated example, this coupling is effected by the strip'f engaging by means of a notch the thickened and bent end of the friction Wire n. On projection of the gre nade, the friction Wire n is retained by and as well as the strip f, which reina-ins on the barrel, and the Wire' as aresult is drawn out of 'the' priming tube 'and ignites the priming. The ignition vtravels along the priming channel inthe priming rings mto a propelling charge p located in the body of the grenade, in which a plunger Z' is embedded. On the propelling charge being fired, it propelsthe plunger l into the detonator-c embedded in the burstingcharge b, and thereby ignites and explodes the latter. In order to insure the tiring .of the charge ivhen the `percussive fuse becomes operative, the' percussive plunger e is not arranged to strike the detonatoi c, but strikes against the percussion cap d, embedded inthe pio,
pelling charge p whereby the formerignites the latter, which then propels the plunger Z and a friction Wire for saidtime, fuse en- 2Q against the detonator 11n this manner a gaged by a notch o',said-stripy,I,iA properly timed explosion of the grenade is 3. In a grenade proected'fr'ornfa small insured under all circumstances. The two arm, a percussion fuse, a plunger for 'said priming rings m, which are graduated on percussion fuse, a strip, a hook on .the inner the outside, enable in the usual manner the4 end of said strip engaged with said plunger, 25
time fuse to be adjusted with precision. inwardly directed hooks on the forked outerprojection of said grenade.
I claim: end of said strip,.a time fuse and a fricl. In a grenade projected :from a small. tion Wire for said time fuse engaged bya arm, a percussion fuse, a plungenfor said Vnotch of said strip. percussion fuse, a time fuse, -an ignitenior Signed at Vienna, in tlie Province ofv 30 said time-fuse and combined means for re- Lower-Austria and Empiregfo Austria-4 taining said plunger until projection of the Hungary, this Iith dayof December,qA..D. grenade and for actuating said Aigniter on 1912. i
Q. In a grenade projected from a small FRANZ arm, a percussion fuse, a plunger for said v Witnesses: percussion fuse, a strip engaged with said WILHELM BERGER,
plunger and with the small arm,.a time fuse AUGUST FUGGER. i
