DRIVING-REIN GUARD.
Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed April 27, 1912.
1,058,476. Patented Apr. 8, 1913.
Serial No. 693,525.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, ALEXANDER B. SIBLEY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Willis, in the county of Montgomery and State of Texas, have invented new and use ful Improvements in Driving-Rein Guards, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to improvements in rein holders for vehicle shafts.
In carrying out my invention it is my purpose to provide a simple and effective rein holder of \this class which is provided with means whereby the holder may be either longitudinally or vertically adjusted upon the shafts of a vehicle.
Another object of theinvention is to provide a device of this character which may be easily and quickly attached to'the thills or shafts Without necessitating the employment of additional securing elements other than those employed in retaining the thill retaining bolts for the thill irons are adapted to pass through the elongated openings 5 to sustain the member 3 upon the shafts, and, in some instances when it is desirable to adjust the said member 3 longitudinally of the shafts, straps 7 provided with suitployed as illustrated in ing. These straps 7 pass between the notched ends 6 of the sleeve 4, and, if desired, only the said straps may be employed as retaining elements. The members of the device are each formed with vertically extending arms 8, the same being arranged upon the outer edges of the said members, and each of these arms is provided with a plurality of spaced openings 9. Each of the arms Sis further provided with an enlarged head 10, and this head is formed with a rectangular opening 11 and an annular opening 12. I
The numeral 13 designates the upper member of the rein support. This member comprises a pair of sections designated by the numerals 1 1 and 15 respectively, and each of the members 14: and 15 are substantially L shaped, the vertical arms 16 of which having their lower portions inturned as at 17. These inturned portions are threaded and adapted to project through any of the series of openings 9 provided in the vertical arm 8 of the member 3.
The numerals 18 designate securing elements for the said threaded inturned portions 17 of the members 14 and 15. The members comprising the elements 13 are each preferably formed of a solid rod and the said members adjacent their vertical arm 16 are bent upon themselves to provide upwardly extending stops 19, which are adapted to limit the movement of the reins when the said reins are positioned upon the horizontal portions of the rods. The rods 14 and 15 have their free longitudinal ends threaded at opposite pitches to receive a sleeve 20 which provides means, not only for securing the members together but also for providin for the longitudinal adjustment of the said members.
The numerals 27 designate U-shaped bolts which are adapted to pass through the openings 11 and 12 of the heads 10 of the vertical arms 9 of the members 3, and to embrace the vertical arms 16 of the member 13. The bolts 27 preferably have one of their arms A still further object of the invention is the provision of a device of this character which shall be of a simple onstruction, comparatively cheap to manufacture and which may be easily and quickly secured upon the thills of a vehicle.
With the foregoing objects in view, the invention resides in the construction, combination and operative arrangement of parts set forth in the following description and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improvement in applied position. Fig. 2 is an elevation, partly in section, of the improvement. Fig; 3 is a perspective view of one of the lower side arms of the device. Fig. 4 is a detail longitudinal sectional view taken through the upper portion of a slightly modified form of the device.
Referring now to the drawing in detail, the numeral 1 designates the shafts of an ordinary vehicle and 2 the thill irons for the shafts or thills.
The numeral 3 designates the lower member of my improvement. One of these memhers is employed upon the adjacent shafts and each of the said members comprise a lower longitudinally extending rounded portion or sleeve 4. The sleeve is provided with elongated slots 5 and the said sleeve adjacent its ends is further provided with oppositely disposed pairs of notches 6. The
thus materially adding to the life of the reins and of course the scroll 21 will prevent the reins from slipping off the device.
hat I claim is 2- In a rein support a rounded sleeve provided with longitudinally extending slots and having its longitudinal edges recesse beyond the terminal of the slots, securing elements arranged within the slots and passing through the depressions, said sleeve being formed with a vertically extending arm having spaced openings, an L-shapedmcmber having an offset end engaging within one of the openings, a U-shaped securing member for the arched member en aging with the vertical member of the sleeve, the said L-shaped member being provided with a longitudinally adjustable extension.
In testimony whereof I aflix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ALEXANDER B. SIBLEY.
headed to snugly engage within the opening 11 and to contact with the walls thereof, the said walls being preferably inclined. The opposite arm of each of the U-shaped bolts 27 is threaded, and the said threaded portion passing through the openings 12 is adapted to be engaged by a nut 28.
In Fig. 4 I have illustrated a slightly modified form 01: one of the ends of the upper members of the support. In this figure I have shown the corners of the vertical arms 16 curved and provided with a scroll 21. The inner and vertical arm of this scroll is formed with an opening 22 through which extends a rod 23, the ends of which are threaded and the numeral 24 designates abolt for attaching the arms to the scroll.
The numeral 25 designates a sleeve which is loosely mounted for rotation upon the rod 23, and the said sleeve is provided with enlargements 26 which are arranged adjacent the vertical portions of the scrolls 21, and it will be noted that the reins 29 resting upon lVitnesses: any portion of the sleeve will permit of the S. A. CRAWFORD, free rotation of the sleeve upon the rod 23, B. A. TRICE.
