To all whom it may concern: v
Be it known that I, EDWARD H. P aorrrrr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Radford, in the county of Montgomery and State of Vir inia, have invented a new and useful Coreiar, of which the following is a specification. l l
The invention relatcs'to improvements 1n eore'bars. l
The object of the present'inventioniis to improve I the construction of tubular core hars and to eliminate expensive hay rope in the making of thefirst coat and pi )es and other hollowbodics, and to .provire a' simple, eflicient andl com inexpensive core bar, equi )pcd withI means for holding a first coato terial, such as saw dustand capable of enabliiw such coatto be rapidlypand uniformijy applied to the core bar when', the latter is in either a cold .orheated-,conditiom With these and other objects in view," the invention consists in the constructionand novel combination of parts hereinafter'fully described, illustrated inthe accompanying drawing, and pointed out in the claims here-, to ap iended; 1t being understood that varif.
ous c anges 1n the form, proportion," siae and minor details oficonstructiomwithm the scope of the claims, may be resorted to without departing from the spirit orsacrificing any of the advantagesof the inven-4 tion.
In the drawing-Figuro 1 is a plan view,
of a core bar, constructed in accordance with this invention, and an apparatus for .applys ing the first coat to thecore bar. Fig-,2 is
an enlarged transverse .sectional viewof the.
eure bar, showing the ifirst'coat applied to the same.
tions presenting flat inwardly converging ground leaves, such as molasses and water,
for casting aratively combustible -rnacoperate with Fig. 3 is a detail sectional view v of one of the bearings of the apparatus.-
'pipeand provided at' -side, faces 3 and forming intervening dovetailed grooves or spaces 4, into winch the combustible material 5 constituting the first coat lis compressed. The first coat, which may consist of any suitable comminuted combustible material, such as saw dust, etc., and a suitable binder, is designed to take the place of expensive hay rope. lVhile the fiat side facesmof the inner portions of l,the ribs are arranged at a slight angle to 4each other to dovetail the material between lthe ribs, the latter may, however, have parallel side faces at their inner portions, or constructed 1n any other suitable manner .so as to retain the material on the core bar. -Thel outer 'are tapere ortions of the longitudinal ribs to' a sharp longitudinal outer edge 6 to facilitate the ullmg of the core bars, the sharp outere ges being adapted Ito cuttheir vway through the core bar material-when the core, bars are ulled.
' The corel bar .1 `is provi ed at intervals in the vbottom of the grooves or spaces between the ribs lwith combined vent and ancher/openings 7. .These openings, which 4"mayfbe either round, square, or any other preferred lform, are, adapted to receive portions ofthe first` coat, the material thereof beingpressed into the openings 7 when the first coat is applicdto the core bar by the means hereinafter described. The openings i the ribsinholdingthe material ofthe first coat to the core bars. The ribs'. are embedded in the first-coat, which is preferably lof a thickness inexc'ess of the heightof the ribsy so as to e'xtend slightly beyondlthe same, as clearly illustrated in Fia. 2 ofthe drawing.
.The corebarisfprovided with smooth terminal' portions 8 and 9 to4 fit adjustable bearings'lO slidablymounted in a supporting frame 11 and adaptedto be adjusted transverselyv thereof to move the .core bar towardA and from apressure roller 12 to vary the thickness ofthe first coat. The slidable bearings, which may be guided in any. suitable manner. are adjusted by screws 13a-'provided at their outer portions with crank" handles 14 and connected at their iiiner ends Ato the adjustable bearings, lock xruts;.15 "j,beingpreferably mounted on the? outrportions'of the adjusting screws to se'- cut t e bearings in their adjustment` The core bar and the pressure roller extend .longitudinally of the fiale-.in.\elose source, is fed to the corebar and is'pressed against the same and forced into the grooves and openings thereof by the pressure roller.'
The core bar and-the pressure roller are .siinultaneoi'isly rotated'.l by the means` liere-4 mafter described, 'which cause theadjacent,l
portions to move downwardly.
The end 8 of the core bar is provided with` a tubular extensioii'l, which is adapted to be secured by-'a pin'l?, or otlier'fsuitable fi\steiiiiig"device,' to a slidablejcoupling sleeve 18,-inonnted on. an operating shaftI 1f).
and slidably int-erlocked with the same by a feather or spline 20. The o eratingshaft 19, which' is'joiirnaled in a suitable bearinf1r 21 of the lframe at one end thereof, exten s longitudinally ofthe sam'e, and the sleeve is slidable along the shaft19 to carry it into and out of the tubuliili; extension 16 of the core bar. TheI in 17 pierces the tubular extension and tie sleeveand engages a' transverse lsocket 22 in the inner portiony of Ithe operating shaft 19. l
The operating shaft, which extends beyond one end of the supporting-frame equipped witha crank liandle`2, or otl suitable o ieratin ed with the sha t 24 of the pressure roller by gearing consisting of a pinion 25v andv gear wheel'QG.' The pinion 25 is .mounted on the'outer portion of the operating shaft4 and` the'gear 26 is suitably fixed to the adjacent end of the shafty24 of the pressure` In practice the teeth of thelgears will'be of sufiicient length to permita lim'- ited adjustment of the core bar without earg roller.
rvingthe gears out of'mesli.A When the handle 23 of the operating shaft isturnedf the core bar and the pressure roller'will bel simultaneously rotated,r` thel adjacent 'portions r'noving in they same direction Abut at different speeds due to the diii'erencelin' the diameter of the ears.
The combustib e material'may-be a plied to the'core bar when the latter is eit er in a heated or cold condition, and the retain-y ier device, and itl is connect-j iirstfvcoat,l whereby "a mixture containing coiiiminuted combustible material may be applied to the core bar in a cold or heated .,condition, said ribs having sharp loiigitudinal outer edges adapted to cut their way throu h the core material when the core bai' is pul ed.
2. A tubular core bar provided with exteriorlongitudinal ribs spaced apart and having fiat side faces and forming intervening grooves for holding a coat of comminuted combustible material in which the 'ribs are embedded to retain the same on the ,core bar.
3. A core bar provided with longitudinal ribs spaced apart to form interveningr lgrooves arranged to receive a mixture of tcombustible material for holding the saine on the core bar, said ribs being provided with ta )ered outer portions forming sharp edges a apted to cut a way through the core ibar material when the core bars are iulled. j 4. A tubular core bar provided with exterior longitudinal ribs forminff intervening Ifgrooves arranged to reeive and hold a mix- `itui'e of combustible material to retain the same on the core bar, the latter being also provided at the spaces between the ribs lwith combined vent and anchor openings communicating with the interior of the tnllbular core bar and adapted to also receive portions ofthe said material to assist in lding the same.
5. A tubular core bar provided with an annular series of exterior longitudinal ribs of uniform size spaced apart and presenting inwardly'diver ing side faces to forni dovetailed ooves Ier vretaining a mixture of combusti le material on the core bar.
6. A core bar having spaced'exterioi longitudinal ribs provided at their inner portions with fiatside faces and having their outer portions tapered to a sharp edge, said core bar being also provided between the ribs ,with openings. 7. A tubular core bar provided on its outer periphery with longitudinal ribs which are disposed radially with relation to the center of the bar, said ribs being se arated by spaces which spaces are wider at t ie hase. of t e ribs than at an intermediate point thereof.
In testimony, that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto atiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
