WILLIAM H. DECKER, or YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO, ASSIGNOR or ONE-THIRD '10 EMME'I s. DECKER, or YOUNGSTOWN, OHIO.
PAPER-HANGING APPLIANCE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed August 27,1912. 'Serial No. 717,299.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILLIAM H. Dnonnn, citizen of the United States, residing at Youngstown, in the county of Mahoning and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper- Hanging Appliances, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the subject of paper hanging appliances, and has special reference to an improved device of this character particularly adapted for applying paper to the ceiling of a room.
The invention has for its main object the provision of a paper hanging device of extreme simplicity in construction, while at the same time embodying means which en-' ables the paper hanger to apply a strip of paper to the ceiling with facility and accuracy, and without the use of a step ladder or scafiolding of any character. Also, the improved appliance is so constructed as to facilitate the perfect register or matching of the paper, and may be used by the paper hanger not only for the regular ceiling work, but also in connection with the modern drop ceiling where the ceiling paper is dropped onto the walls.
With these and other objects in view, which will readily appear to those familiar with the subject, the invention consists in the novel construction, combination, and arrangement of parts hereinafter more fully described, illustrated, and claimed.
In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a paper hanging device for ceiling work embodying the present invention. Fig. 2 is a plan view of the device illustrating by dotted lines the arrangement of the strip of paper thereon, whereby the operation of matching is facilitated.
The improved appliance or device, constructed according to the present invention, embodies in its organization a supporting and holding frame designated in the drawings by the numeral 1. This frame may be constructed of any suitable material, such as a smooth light metal strip bent into substantially rectangular form so as to provide a wide and substantial support upon which may be held the strip of paper to be applied to the ceiling of the room.
The open frame 1, when bent, or otherwise made, into the form shown in the drawings includes a pair of opposite parallel frame members 2 and a single frame member 3 which connects the frame members 2 at one end thereof, thereby leaving the other ends of the frame members 2 unconnected, with the result of forming a frame which is open at one side.
To provide for properly handling and manipulating the frame 1, the latter has arranged therein a pair of spaced brace strips 44: having the incllned terminal legs 5 whose feet 6 are screwed, bolted or otherwise fastened to the opposite frame members 2, thus providing a substantial interior brace for the frame to give it the necessary rigidity and strength. In addition to the terminal legs 5, the spaced brace strips 4 are provided with central flat clamp portions 7 between which is bolted or otherwise secured a handle block 8, having a socket 9 that receives an end of the handle 10 which is grasped by the paper hanger in using the appliance.
In the use of the device, the paper is first cut and supplied with paste in the ordinary way and is then laid over the frame 1 in the position indicated by the dotted lines in Fig. 2 of the drawings, the matching edge of the strip of paper being arranged even with the open side of the frame in order that the workman may readily observe the proper register or matching of the paper.
The paper strip would, of course, hang down over one of the sides or ends of the frame as it is moved along in carrying the strip to place upon the ceiling, and this operation is supplemented by the use of a long handled brush as may be necessary or required. It will thus be seen that the whole operation of hanging the ceiling paper may be readily accomplished entirely from the floor of the room, thereby avoiding the use of a step ladder or scaffold.
I claim:
A paper hanging device comprising an open frame consisting of a pair of opposite parallel frame members, and a single frame handle block fitted to the braces, and a hanlnember rigidly connecting the said parallel dle fitted in the block. 10 members at one end thereof only, the other In testimony whereof I hereunto aifix my ends of said parallel members being unconsignature in the presence of two Witnesses.
" nected to leave a side opening for the frame WILLIAM H. DECKER.
wherein an edge of the paper may be eX- Witnesses: posed for matching purposes, interior braces AGNES A. JOHNSTON, connecting the parallel frame members a ALFRED LIEBMAN.
