GEORGE FROST PUTNAM, 0F FLINT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR TO STANDARD RULE COMPANY, OF FLINT, MICHIGAN.
TAPE-CASE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, GEORGE F. PUTNAM, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Flint, in the county of Genesee and State of Michigan, haveinvented a new and Improved Tape-Case, of which the following is a full, clear, and eXact description.
My invention relates generally to cases for tape measures and more particularly it is directed to a new and improved construction whereby the facility with which such cases may be held is enhanced.
The principal object of my invention is to provide anew and improved tape case, the construction of which presents a series of corrugations or roughened portions between the opposite sides thereof whereby the case may be held in the hand more securely.
Other objects and advantages of the invention will appear as the description thereof proceeds, all of which is particularly pointed out and included in the appended claim.
Reference is to be had to the accompany-- ing drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts in all the views, and in which Figure 1 is a perspective view of the case; Fig. 2 is a perspective view of the bottom portion thereof; Fig. 8 is a perspective View of the top portion; Fig. 4 is a partial vertical sectional view showing the method of connecting the portions.
The case is made up preferably of an upper portion 1 and a lower portion 2, there being an integral peripheral flange 3 on the upper portion. This upper port-ion is also provided with a central opening 4 within which the reel for winding the tape is carried, the construction being improved by the provision .of a peripheral flange 5 around the said opening.
The lower portion 2 of the casing is preferably of cup-shaped formation, the bottom 5 being preferably integral with the circular side portion 6, the symmetry of the parts being obtained by bending inwardly Copies of this patent may be obtained for Specification of Letters Patent.
Application'filed February 7, 1912.
Patented Apr. 1,1913.
Serial No. 676,071.
I the said circular side whereby a peripheral flange 7 is provided, similar in appearance to the flange 3 on the upper portion; the formation of the said shoulder or flange provides for increased diameter of the bottom of the said lower portion, as shown particularly in Fig. 4.
In order to enable thecase to be held in the hands securely under different conditions, as when the hands are moist from perspiratio'n, or otherwise, the circular side portion 6 is provided with a continuous series of corrugations or roughened portions 8 so that the-fingers may securely grip the case when held in position for winding the tape or otherwise. The particular form of these corrugations or roughened portions may be such as is suited to the purpose, that shown in Figs. 1 and 2 being typical of the preferred form, it being clear, of course, that other equivalent forms may be used.
Having-thus described my invention, I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent A tape case made up of two portions, one of which is circular in formation and provided with an integral peripheral flange and also provided with a central opening adapted to receive a winding reel, the second of which is cup-shaped in formation, the diameter of the interior of the second portion adjacent the bottom being substantially greater than the interior diameter of the said portion adjacent the top thereof, whereby a peripheral flange adjacent the lower end thereof and on the outer side results, the said first portion being positioned on top of the said cup-shaped second portion, whereby the outside part of the second portion is included between the said peripheral flanges, the said side being corrugated.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
' GEORGE FROST PUTNAM.
