To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, HAROLD H. HALLooK, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Macedon, in the county of Wayne and State of New York, have invented a new and Improved Adjustable Supporting and Looking Mechanism for Drawing-Tables, &c., of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to means for adjustably supporting and locking in adjusted position a drawing board or the top of a table or like article; the object being to provide an improved adjusting, supporting and locking mechanism in which only two operating members are required to release and clamp the drawing board and on which, also, the locking mechanism is adapted to support the parts in adjusted position by a combined clamping and gripping action.
The accompanying drawings illustrating a drawing board of well known pattern equipped with my adjustable supporting and locking mechanism are as follows:
Figure 1 is an end view of the table and Fig. 2 a view from the right with reference to Fig. 1. Fig. 3 is an enlarged end View of the drawing board, with a part of its support, showing the drawing board in a position somewhat elevated above that seen in Fig. 1 and with the parts of the supporting mechanism in correspondingly different relative positions. Fig. 4: is a view from the right of the parts seen in Fig. 3 showing, however, only the cleat on the under side of the drawing board, the left hand ends of the clamping rods and the inclosing tubes together with the left hand end frame member of the table. Fig. 5 is an inside face view of one of the locking elements with a part of the supporting standard therein. Fig. 6 shows, in a horizontal sectional view, a part of one of the upper ends of one of the end frame members of the table and with the supporting standard also shown in section while the clamping and gripping or clutching element, seen in rear view in Fig. 5 is shown in plan View. The threaded end of the clamping rod is shown as engaging through the clamping element in Fig. 6. Fig. 7 is a view similar to Fig. 6 of'the clamping element at the other end of the rod and shows a part of the rod and the engaging head thereon.

Referring to the drawings,a drawing table equipped with my invention may have end standards or frame members T provided with legs between which spacing and locking rods 75 are secured in the usual way, as seen. Between these standards T at their upper ends there may be supported in the usual way a case H for a cabinet. The end standards T are each provided with upwardly extending arms t having bosses e at the upper ends thereof, slotted as seen in Fig. 4, and through these bosses there are bored holes to receive the clamping rods O and 0 These rods are provided, at the ends thereof away from the observer with reference to Figs. 1 and 3, and as seen in Figs. 2 and 7, with suitable heads w, which may be either integrally formed or such heads may be secured thereon by means of pins. On the rod 0 extending through the bosses e on the rear arms t, being the right hand ones with reference to Figs. 1 and 2, there are pivotally secured within the slots, in such bosses, the swinging links B. Through the bosses e on the end pieces t, under the front edge of the drawing board, there extends the rod 0 similar to the rod 0 Under the heads to on the ends of the rods 0 and O away from the observer, with reference to Figs. 1 and 3, there are pivotally supported, one on each rod, clamping or gripping elements V each provided with a channel 0 therein for receiving the corresponding standard P or P pivotally connected, one to each end of the cleat C on the under side of the end of the drawing board D away from the observer, and adapted to be clamped in adjusted position; while similar clamping and gripping elements V are pivotally supported on the ends of these rods 0 and O nearest the observer, to similarly engage and hold the standards P and P pivotally connected, one to each end of the clea-t C on the under side of the end of the drawing board D nearest the observer, and held in place by means of hand nuts N. By the operation of the nuts N all the clamping and gripping elements V may be looked to hold all of thevstandards P and P in adjusted position. Tubes 0 may be inserted over these rods 0 and 0 between the end standards T.
On the under side of the drawing board D there are secured channeled cleats C and the supporting standards P are pivotally connected thereto near their rigl'it hand ends, with reference to Figs. 1 and 3, by means of bolts '1' extending therethrough. Swinging l'n'acing links B are pivotally connected to the left hand. ends of the cleats C by means, preferably, of a rod 0 extending lengthwise of the drawing board and tthrough both of such cleats -C and also tl'lrough the bosses b at the ends of the swinging braces which are inserted within the channels formed in the cleats C. These swinging braces B are notched at their left hand ends, as indicated at 5 in order that they may receive the rod 0 extending between the arms 23 of the standards T and under the front edge of the drawing board. Each link B is also provided with a notch, as seen at 7), to receive the bolt 1" at the upper end. of the standard P when the drawing board is in its lowermost position. The swinging links B operate to brace the drawing board D against any swinging movement to the front or the rear on the standards P and P while such standards P and P are held in adjusted position by screwing up the hand nuts N.
By reference to Figs. 6 and 7 it will be noticed that there is a slight clearance between the clamping elements V and the bosses c on the upwardly extending arms 6, formed on the standards T, in order that the clamping and gripping elements V may be free to swing upon the rods 0 and O It will at once be noticed that the conformation and proportion of the parts is such that, with the maximum clamping action which can be secured by screwing up the hand nuts N, the clamping and gripping elements V do not engage against the bosses and that any sliding tendency of the standards P or P through the elements V tends to turn such gripping and clamping elements V upon the supporting rods 0 and O and such swinging results in causing ing the elements V to grip the standards P and P the action being after the manner of a clutch; and for this purpose the channels 4), through the elements V, are conformed at their outer edges to provide comparatively narrow and sharp gripping edges.
In using a drawing board equipped with my adjustable supporting and locking mechanism it will be seen that there are only two members to be operated; that is, the two nuts N, and that the drawing board naturally tends to stay in adjusted position regardless of any clamping action which may be effected by the nuts N and that, too, even when the gripping elements V are comparatively free to swing uponthe rods 0 and It will also be noticed that it is only necessary to operate one of such nuts N at a time and to raise the corresponding edge of the drawing board to adjusted position. In lowering one edge of the drawing board the elements V on the rods 0 and may be turned slightly to permit the correspond :ing standards P or P to slide more freely therethrough.
To prevent the gripping action, hereinbefore referred to, taking place while the supporting standards are being raised to any desired position of adjustment, the gripping elements V may be provided with lugs o as shown only in Figs. 5 and 6, adapted to engage the supporting standards in a way to preventthe gripping action while such standards are being moved upwardly therethrough.
It is believed from the foregoing description of my invention and the cooperation of the several features thereof that the application and use thereof to a drawing table or like article is sufficiently clear to call for no further explanation herein.
Any suitable means such as a set screw, one for each rod 0 and and as shown at e in Fig. 7, may be used to prevent the rotation of the rods.
WVhat I claim is:
1. In a device for the purpose described and in combination with the frame, a. supporting standard pivotally connected to the table bed proper and a. gripping and clutching element pivoted to the frame and provided with a channel located eccentrically of the pivot for receiving the supporting standard and means permitting the swinging of the gripping and clutching element on the pivot, for releasably forcing the grip ping and clutching element against the standard in the channel therein, the gripping and clutching element adapted to swing upon its pivot angularly relative to and independently of the frame and with the channel therein conformed to permit a comparatively slight angular movement thereof relative to the standard when clamped against the same and with the parts in looking positions.
2. In a device for the purpose described and in combination with the end members of the frame, supporting standards pivotally connected to the table bed proper and a separate gripping and clutching element for each standard pivoted to the frame members and provided with a channel located eccentrically of the pivot for receiving the supporting standards and means permitting the swinging of the gripping and clutching elements on their pivots, for releasably forcing each gripping and clutching element against the standard in the channel therein and a single operating means for such forcing means, each gripping and clutching element adapted to swing upon its pivot angularly re ative to and independently of the frame and with the channel therein conformed to permit a comparatively slight angular movement thereof relative to the corresponding standard when clamped against the same.
3. In a device for the purpose described and in combination with the frame, a supporting standard pivotally connected to the table bed proper and a gripping and clutching element pivoted to the frame and provided with a channel located eccentrically of the pivot for receiving the supporting standard and means, permitting the swing ing of the gripping and clutching element on the pivot, for releasably forcing the gripping and clutching element against the standard in the channel therein, the gripping and clutching element adapted to swing upon its pivot angularly relatively to and independently of the frame and with the channel therein conformed to permit a comparatively slight angular movement thereof relative to the standard when clamped against the same and with the parts in locking positions, the parts being conformed and adapted when in looking position upon a sliding movement of the standard in the channel in the gripping element to effect a relative angular movement between the .gripping element and the stand ard and the gripping element conformed and adapted upon such angular movement to operate as a. clutch and grip the standard to prevent any such further relative movement between the gripping element and the standard.
4. In a device for the purpose described and in combination with the frame, sup porting standards pivotally connected to the table bed proper and a separate gripping and clutching element for each standard pivoted to the frame members and provided with a channel located eccentrically of the pivot for receiving the supporting standards and means, permitting the swinging of the gripping and clutching elements on the pivots, for releasably forcing each gripping and clutching element against the standard in the channel therein and a single operat ing means for such forcing means, each gripping and clutching element adapted to swing upon its pivot angularly relatively to and independently of the frame and with the channel therein conformed to permit a comparatively slight angular movement thereof relative to the corresponding standard when clamped against the same and with the parts in locking posit-ions, the parts being conformed and adapted when in locking positions upon a sliding movement of either standard in the channel in the corre sponding element to effect a relative angular movement between the gripping elementand the standard and each gripping element conformed and adapted upon such angular movement to operate as a clutch and grip the corresponding standard to prevent any such further relative movement between the gripping element and the standard.
5. In a device for the purpose described and in combination with the end members of the frame, supporting standards pivotally connected to the table bed proper and a separate gripping and clutching element for each standard pivoted to the frame members and provided with a channel located eccentrically of the pivot for receiving the supporting standards and means permitting the swinging of the gripping and clutching elements on their pivots, for releasably forcing the gripping and clutching elements against the standards in the channels therein, each gripping and clutching element adapted to swing upon its pivot angularly relative to and independently of the frame and with the channel therein conformed to permit a comparatively slight angular movement thereof relative to the corresponding standard when clamped against the same the parts being also conformed and adapted upon movement in one direction only of the standard from adjusted position to effect a slight angular movement between the standard and the gripping and clutching element causing the same to operate as a clutch preventing any such further movement.
6. In a device for the purpose described and in combination with the frame, a supporting standard pivotally connected to the table bed proper and a gripping and clutching element pivoted to the frame and provided with a channel located eccentrically of the pivot for receiving the supporting standard and means permitting the swinging of the gripping and clutching element on the pivot, for releasably forcing the gripping and clutching element against the standard in the channel therein, the gripping and clutching element adapted to swing upon its pivot angularly relative to and independently of the frame.
