MINNIE S. FARNSWORTH, OF PASADENA, CALIFORNIA.
ADJUSTABLE BEI).
Application filed June 29, 1912.
To all whom t may concern.'
Be it known that I, MINNIE S. FAENS- wonTH, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pasadena, in the county of Los Angeles and State of California, have invented Certain new and useful Improvements in Adjustable Beds, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to beds, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a bed the side rails of which may be tilted at varying angles so that when' a person is lying upon the bed, the feet or head may be raised or lowered according to the requirements of the disease which the person has. It very often happens, of course, that in the treatment of some diseases it is required to have the feet raised above the level of the head or to have the body inclined with the head above the level of the feet. This construction has, therefore, been 4provided so that the side rails of the-bed may be tilted from a horizontal position to any desired angle.
This invention is illust-rated in the accompanying drawings, wherein Figure 1 is a top plan view of the bed with one portion of the spring broken away. Fig. 2 isa vertical sectional view through the bed in the horizontal position. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view through the bed in the horizontal position. Fig. 4 is a view similar to Fig. 2 with the side rails tilted to cause the feet of the patient to be higher than the head. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of one of the side rails. Fig. 6 is a sectional view along the line 6 6 in Fig. 4.
Referring to the accompanying drawings, it will be seen that this invention comprises the head 10, foot 11, and side rails 12. The head and foot are provided with the usual side posts 13 which are provided with vertically extending sets of pockets 14 and 15 which have their entrances in the form ot key hole slots. These pocket-s are formed in alinement as shown in Fig. 3, and support the ends of the side rails as shown in Figs. 2 and 4. The ends of the side rails are provided with the tapering heads 1G which pass into the key hole slots and are securely held in place.
From an inspection of Fig. 4 it will be readily seen that after the side rails have been inserted in the pockets that they are Specification of Letters Patent.

wedged in place thereby holding the bed in the tilted position. From a comparison of Figs. 2 and 4 it will also be seen that the pockets 14 are provided with inclined inner walls so that the side rails may be moved to the horizontal position, and that the inner walls of the pockets 15 are straight to assist in holding the side rails in the inclined position. If desired, braces 17 may be pivotally connected with the foot post and removably connected with the side rails by means of set screws 1S passing thro-ugh the ends of the braces and through the openings 19 formed in the side rails. Plates 20 extend inwardly from the side rails and support the slats 21 upon which the spring 22 rests. Blocks 23 are formed upon the inner faces of the side rails to each side of the plates 20 so that the slats will be prevented from slipping oli of the plates when the side rails are tilted. Under normal conditions the side rails are placed in the horizontal position at any side desired, the side rails being mounted in the pockets 14. When it is desired to tilt the rails, they are remo-ved and the desired end raised and the rails then inserted in the pockets 15 instead of 14. It will, therefore, be seen that there has been provided two sets of pockets 14 and 15, the pockets 14 used when t-he side rails are horizontal, and the pockets 15 when the side rails are tilted. After the rails have been tilted, the braces 17 can be connected with the rails, and the bed is then ready to have the slats and springs put in place.
It will thus be seen that there has been provided a bed which may be tilted at any angle desired and which will be firmly and removably held in the tilted position.
I claim- 1. A bed comprising a head, ay toot, the
end posts of said head and foot being each provided with alined sets of vertically eX- tending pockets provided with reduced entrance openings, and side rails having their ends adapted to fit into pockets of said head and foot, said side rails being placed in one set of pockets when in the horizontal position and in the remaining set of pockets when in a tilted position.
2. A bed comprising a head, a foot, said head and foot being provided with end posts each having a plurality of sets of vertically extending pockets formed therein and having key-hole entrances, the inner walls of one set of openings being inclined, and the inner Walls of the other set being vertical, and side rails having their' end portions formed into Wedge-shaped attaching heads passing into said pockets and fitting into said irst mentioned set of pockets when said rails are horizontal, and into said second mentioned set When said rails are tilted.
3. A bed comprising a head, a foot, the end posts of said head and foot being provided with alined vertically extending sets of pockets, side rails fitting into the inner sets When in the horizontal position, and in the outer sets when in the tilted position, slatsupporting plates extending inwardly 115 from said nside rails, and means carried by said side rails for holding said slats in place when said side rails are in the tilted position.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my 20 signature in presence of two witnesses.
