WILHELM "KATZENBERGER, OF HEIDELBERG, GERMANY.
IBEDSTEAD AND MATTRESS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Feb. 24, 1914.
Application filed August 1, 1913. Serial No. 782,408.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, WILHELM Knrznn- BERGER, a subject of the German Emperor, and resident of Heidelberg, Germany, have invented an Improved Bedstead and Mattress, of which the following is a specification.
My invention concerns certain new and useful improvements in bedsteads and mattresses therefor, the object being to so construct same that the mattress can easily and at a moments notice be detached. To this end the mattress is mounted on a series of longitudinally disposed flat iron bars which are in turn bearing on springs and guided in a vertical direction by means of guide plates.
In order that this invention may be more clearly understood, reference is made to the accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1 shows a transverse sectional elevation of the bedstead with mattress mounted therein; Fig. 2 shows a sectional side elevation of one end of the bedstead and mattress, and Fig. 3 shows a plan of Fig. 2 with one half of the mattress removed for the sake of clearness.
1 designates the two sides of a bedstead of ordinary construction, and 2 supporting bars or rests, one such rest being fixed at the inner face of the said sides and at each end and at the lower edge thereof. Each of these rests 2 is provided with a dovetailed recess in such a manner that both of the two sets of oppositely arranged rests are adapted to receive the correspondingly shaped ends of boards 3 which are thus capable of easy detachment. Mounted on each of the said boards are two spiral springs 4: which in turn carry a cross beam 5, the ends of the latter being guided in a vertical direction. For this purpose I make provision of plates 6 which are attached to the inner faces of the sides of the bedstead.
Copies of this patent may be obtained for five cents each, by addressing the These plates have dove-tailed recesses in which the ends of the beams 5 engage and glide according to the strain to which the springs are subjected. The cross beams are moreover provided with a number of grooves for the reception of a series of longitudinally disposed bars 7 each of the latter having an extension or shoulder 8 which is so devised that longitudinal displacement of the bars 7 is prevented.
It will now be readily seen that all the parts described can easily be detached or replaced and that this construction allows of the fitting on the mattress of an upper mattress or cover without causing any damage to it as is so often the case with other devices of this kind.
Having now fully described my said invention what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is In the herein described mattress for bedstcads, the combination with supporting bars having dove-tailed recesses and fixed to the inner face of the sides of the said bedstead and at the ends thereof, of boards fitted in oppositely arranged recesses of the supporting bars, spiral springs mounted on the latter, cross beams, having dove-tailed ends and grooves, carried by said springs, plates provided with dovetailed recesses attached to the sides of the bedstead, these recesses serving to receive and guide the ends of the cross beams, and longitudinally disposed bars mounted in the grooves of the cross beams, all as and for the purpose set forth.
In testimony whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
I/VILHELM KATZENBERGER.
