UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JOHN F. SCHYLANDER, 01? CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
PLUME-HOLDEB. OR THE LIKE.
To all whom. it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN F. SoI-IYLANDER, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Plume-Holders or the Like, of which the following is a description.
My invention belongs to that general class of devices known as plume holders or the like, adapted for securing plumes, feathers, flowers, and other ornaments, or the like, to garments or wearing apparel, and particularly ladies hats. N
My invention has among its objects the production of a device of the kind described that is simple, convenient, durable, ornamental and satisfactory, and which may be manufactured at small cost and used wherever found applicable.
The ornaments or trimming may be changed from one hat to another, without injury to the trimming or hat, in a moments time, no sewing or similar fastening being required.
To this end my invention conslsts 1n the novel construction, arrangement and com bination of parts herein shown and described, and more particularly pointed out in the claims.
In the drawings, wherein like reference characters indicate like or corresponding parts, Figure 1 is a perspective view of my device, and a portion of a hat showing the device applied thereto. F 2 is a plan view of the base of the socket member. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view of my device taken substantially on line 3, 3 of Fig. 4. Fig. f is a. cross sectional view of the same, taken substantially on line a, 4 of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is a sectional view, substantially similar to Fig. 3, showing the securing of the device in position. Fig. 6 is a perspective view of one end of the base, and Fig. 7 is a sectional view, similar to Fig. 3, of a modified construction.
Referring to the drawings, in which the preferred forms of my device are shown, 1 represents a portion of a hat, 3 a plume, feather, or other ornament, having a stem 2. (The plume being shown in dotted lines).
As shown, 1 is a tubular part, which is mounted upon a base 5. The two may be secured together in any suitable manner, preferably so that the tubular part may be removed, so that a number of tubular parts Specification of Letters Patent.

of different sizes may be provided and one of the desired size used. A very convenient way of securing the two parts together is to provide lateral offset portions or flanges 7, 7 on the tubular part, arranged to seat under or be engaged by the flanges 9, 9 on the base. One end of the base may be turned up as at 10, 10 (seeFig. 6) so as to limit the movement of the tubular part in positioning the same. The extensions 10 also prevent the tubular part from working down, in case the holder is positioned vertically, or otherwise inclined.
The base is preferably provided with an engaging member 12, which may be formed integral with the base, if desired, 13 being a lug on part 12 adapted to engage the stem 2 .of the plume or other ornament when the device is positioned. By making the part resilient it springs out of the tubular part when the device is not fixed to the garment, so that the stem may be readily pushed through or inserted.
The base may be provided with any suitable means for securing the same on a hat or other garment, as shown, it is provided with a plurality of lugs 14, which may be pointed, if desired, so as to facilitate forcing the same through the garment or hat. As shown, the lugs 14 are threaded and suitable nuts 15 provided for engaging the same on the interior of the garment. Between the nuts and garment, however, I preferably provide a plate 16, which tends to prevent the holder being pulled from the garment, the area of the plate being greater than the area of the nuts. The plate 16 also reinforces the material opposite the intermediate member 12, so that the member 12 is forced into the tubular part into engagement with the stem 2, when the device ispositioned. (See Fig. 3.)
In the modified construction shown in I Fig. 7, the device is substantially similar except that the base 18 is provided with one lug 20 and one nut 22, 21 representing a plate similar to the plate 16. The base in this form is also provided with extensions or stops 19 at the end, similar to the lugs the two lugs are preferable, as there is no tendency for the device to rotate about the lug, as might be the case with the device shown in Fig. 7.
In operation the stem 2 is inserted in the tubular part, either before or aft-er the tubular part has been positioned on the base, and the lugs 1a then forced through the hat, or whatever theholder is used upon, the plate 16 positioned and the nuts 15 turned down. This locks the holder securely in position on the hat, and also forces the engaging member 12 into a position where the lug 13 will engage the stem.
It will be seen that the device may be readily positioned or removed from a garment, or by partly unscrewing the nuts, the stem of the ornament may be removed from the tubular part without removing the device from the garment.
It is of course understood that the device may be suit-ably finished so that it is ornamental in itself, and may be engraved or otherwise decorated so as to make the same more attractive. WVhere, however, it is covered by other trimming, it may be made more plain and less expensive, the finish depending upon the individual preference of the user.
Having thus described my invention, it is obvious that various immaterial modifications may be made in the same without de-; parting from the spirit of my invent-ion, hence I do not wish to be understood as limiting myself to the exact form, construction or combination of parts herein shown and described, or uses mentioned.
What I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. A device of the character described comprising a socket member adapted to be secured to a garment, a movable engaging member associated with said socket member for securing a plume within the same, and means for securing said socket member to a garment, said movable engaging member being positioned so as to be engaged by the garment when the socket member is secured thereto and projected into the socket.
2. A device of the character described comprising a tubular socket provided with a base adapted to be secured directly against a garment, a yieldable engaging member carried by said base and movable into the tubular socket, said engaging member normally projecting beyond the plane of the base of the socket.
3. A device of the kind described, comprising a base, means for removably securing said base to a suitable garment, a tubular part removably secured to said base, and means carried by the base for securing the article to be held in said tubular part.
4. The combination in a device of the kind described, of a base provided with means for securing the same to a garment, said means comprising a threaded lug thereon arranged to be passed through the garment, and means for engaging said lug at the opposite side of the garment, a tubular socket part, secured to said base, said base being provided with an engaging member movable into the tubular socket to engage an article positioned therein.
5. The combination in a plume holder or the like, of a base, a tubular part engaging said base, a movable engaging member car ried by said base for engaging an article positioned in said tubular part, and means for securing said base and tubular part to a garment, comprising a plurality of lugs extending from the base to the opposite side of the garment, a plate arranged parallel to said base with said lugs extending therethrough, and means for engaging said lugs on the opposite side of said plate.
6. A plume holder, comprising a base and a tubular part removably secured to said base, resilient means for engaging an article in said tubular part, means for removably securing said base to a garment and maintaining said engaging part in operative position, comprising a plurality of lugs extended through the garment, and means for engaging said lugs on the opposite side of the garment;
In testimony whereof, I have hereunto signed my name in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JOHN F. SCHYLANDER.
