Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Apr. 1, 1913.
Application filed August 6, 1912. Serial No. 713,638.
To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, ERNEST G. FIELD, a citizen of the United States, residing at Providence, in the county of Providence and State of Rhode Island, have invented new' and useful Improvements in Bottles, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to the class of nonreiillable bottles andI aims to provide a device of this character which is simple in construction and one which can be cheaply manufactured.
I am well aware of the fact that the maj ority of non-reiillable bottles heretofore devised have proven too expensive to manufact-ure or else inefficient in operation. rIhe bottle which I have devised has been used in actual practice and it is thought that it overcomes the difficulties which have heretofore existed as it is thoroughly efficient in operation and can be manufactured and placed upon the market at a very low cost.
lith the above and other objects in view, my invention relates to such details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of the several parts as will be hereinafter fully described and specifically pointed out in the appended claims.
In describing my invention in detail reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like characters denote like or corresponding parts throughout the several views and in which,
Figure l is a vertical sectional view of my invention showing parts in elevation. Fig. 2 is a fragmentary view of a bottle showing my invention in vertical section therein. Fig. 3 is a plan view of a washer used. Fig. el is a detail view. Fig. 5 is a vertical sectional view of a washer used. Fig. 6 is a plan view of another washer.
In the accompanying drawings wherein is illustrated the preferred form of my invention, the numeral 1 designates the body portion of a bottle which has a neck 2 projecting therefrom, the neck having provided therein annular projecting portionsl 3, said projecting portions being spaced apart one above the other andadapted to serve the purpose hereinafter set forth.
lIhe washer shown in Fig. 6 and designated by the numeral l is preferably constructed of rubber and provided with a center opening 5 and adapted to be seated upon the lower of the projecting portions 3 as clearly illustrated in Fig. l. This washer is adapted also to limit the downward movement of the other washer which will presently be disclosed. A second washer 6 is provided which is normally elliptical in shape and which has an opening 7 formed therein, which opening terminates in the out out portion 8. This washer is also constructed preferably of some springy or elastic material such as rubber. It is disposed in the manner shown in Fig. l engaging the upper of the projecting portions and being pressed into a circular form. Here it is obvious that a compartment is formed between the two washers. this compartment serves a purpose that will be hereinafter set forth.
A valve seat member 9 is provided which is substantially circular in shape and which has an opening 10 formed through the center j thereof for passage of the material contained in the bottle, the opening being reinforced at its lower side through the medium of the substantially lL- shaped collar 11. Raised portions 12 are provided at dialnetrically opposite points upon the valve seat member 9 and adapted to revolubly support a pintle 13. the pintle in turn pivotally supporting a flap valve 14, the flap valve being adapted to close the opening 10 at certain times.
For purpose of raising and lowering the valve seat member 9 within the construction shown, arms 15 are provided therein which are connected at their upper ends by a rod 16, the rod 16 terminating in the eyelet 17. It has been found that in actual practice that means have to be formed for preventing or limiting the upper movement of the flap valve and with this in view a spider 18 is provided upon each of the arms 15 in the manner shown and operating as is obvious.
`When the stopper of my invention is in its uppermost position in the bottle, the latter may be laid upon its side or in any position without allowing the contents thereof to run out and it is also apparent that the bottle may be readily closed by lifting the stopper so that only a part of the contents may be used at one time. By the provision of these two features it is obvious that the efficiency of my invention is greatly added to.
The operation of my invention may be as follows The first two washers are secured in place as is clearly shown while the member is forced through the washer 6 at an angle, the arms 15 engaging the cut out porvalve will open and allow the contents thereof to escape.
advantages and novel featuresof my invention will be readily appreciated.
I desire it to be understoodtthat I may make slight changes in the construction and in the arrangement and combination of the several parts, provided such changes fall` within the scope of the subjoined claims.
-I-Iaving vthus fully described my invention, what -I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
1. 'In a device of the character described, a y bottle having a neck projecting from the upper extremity thereof, said neck having spaced apart annular grooves formed therein whereby said spaced apart offset portions are formed in the interior bore of said neck, r a washer in said neck and engaging the upj per of said offset portions, a second washer engaging the lower of said offset portions,
formed said washers having openings through the centers thereof, a slidable member mounted between said first and second washers, said member carrying a pair of flap valves, the pivot point of said fiap valves j being near the center of said mem-ber whereby when said member is in engagement with said first mentioned washer, said flap valves will be held closed for the purpose described. 2. In combination with a bottlehaving a neck projecting from the upper side thereof, said neck having annular offset portions projecting into the interior bore thereof, a washer in engagement with the lower of said offset portions, a second washer in engage- 1 ment with the upper of said offset portions,
both of said washers having openinds formed i through the centers thereof, a slidable meinber mounted within said neck and between said first and second mentioned washers, a pair of flap valves carried by said member, the pivot point of said flap valves being near the center of said member whereby when said member is in engagement with said first mentioned washer, said valves will be held in a closed position, and means for effecting the vertical movement of said member for the purpose described.
3. In a device of the character described, a bottlehaving a neck projecting from the upper side thereof, said neck having a pair of annular offset portions projecting into the member and extending through said cut-out It is thought that from the foregoing the:
portions, a pair of flap valves carried by said member, the pivot point of said flap valves being near the center thereof whereby when said member is in engagement with the upper of said washers, said valves will be held in a closed position, means for limiting the upper movement o-f said valves and means having connection with said arms for operating said member for the .purpose described.
t. In a device of the class described,a bottle having a neck, lthe latter being provided in spaced apart exteriorly disposed recesses, whereby spaced apart grooves and odset portions are formed upon the inner face of said neck, washers disposed within said neck and in contact with said odset portions, a member slidably mounted between said washers, said member carrying flap valves and means for raising and lowering said member as and for the purpose set forth and described.
5'. In a device of the class described, a bottle having a neck projecting upwardly therefrom, the inner face of said neck provided with a pair of spaced apart circular offset portions, washers dispo-sed in engagement with said offset portions, said washers having central openings provided therein, a member slidably mounted between said washers, flap valves carried upon said inember, means for raising and lowering said member and means for limiting the upward movement of said flap valves as and for the purpose set forth and described. l
6. In a device of the class described, a bottle having a neck therein, circular offset portions projecting inwardly upon the inner face of said neck, washers .disposed in engagement with said oset portions, each of said washers having central openings formed therethrough, a member slidably mounted between said washers and said offset portions, said memberl also having a central opening and recesses lformed therein, said recesses being of greater diameter' than said means for limiting the upward movement of last mentioned central opening, a pintle said flap Valves as and for the purpose set jonrnaled transversely of said member, a forth and described. pair of flap valves pivoted upon said pintle ERNEST G. FIELD.
5 and being normally seated in said recesses, Witnesses:
means for raising and lowering said mem- P. L. PENDLETON, ber7 means carried upon said last mentioned L. W. FIELD.
