EGG-CARRYING CASE.
aosaaoa.
ARD, residing at Belfast, in the county of Allegany and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Egg-Carrying Cases,-of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to, packing cases for the convenient carrying and handling of eggs, and my said invention more especially has reference to the peculiar and novel construction of a cover or lid for carriers of the character stated, and the means for fastening the said cover to the case or bOX. i f
My invention has for its object to provide an improved egg case cover and fastening means therefor of a simple and economical construction in which much time andlexpense is saved in putting on and holding the cover on the case.
With other objects in view, that will hereinafter appear, this invention consists in the novel arrangement and peculiar corribination of parts hereinafter explained, out in the appended claim and illustrated injthe accompanying drawing, in which Figure 1, is a perspective view of an egg carrying case, embodying my improvements. Fig. 2, is a longitudinal sectionpf the same, the top member being shown as swung'back and held in theupright position in full-lines. Fig. 3, is a similarview of the upper art of the case or carrier, the cover being s own down to the locked position. Fig. 4, is a perspective view of one end of the box or case,
removed to the more clearly illustrate one of the swingingor supporting links hereinafter referred to. V
In the practical application of my invention, and as embodied in an egg carrying case, the case or box body 1 has the usual rectangular shape, and is formed of the opposite end boards 10-10, and the .side boards 11 -11, the said end boards being fitted between the sideboards so that the ends of the latter extend beyond the ends 10 to provide-for flush fitting of the upper and'lower cross cleats- 2 and 3 that act as reinforcing means for the box ends, the upper presently explained, the lower cleat 3 at one Specification of Letters Patent. Application filed-August 20,1912. Serial no. 715,980.
cleats 6 on its underside.
one of the cleats when packing the case,
cleats having an additional function,
end also serving as a rest or supporting member, as will presently also appear.
In the practical use of my box for carrymg eggs, the latter are acked in compartments, as indicated in' ig. 2. The top or cover 4 is a plain board having the rectangular shape of and the full length and width of the said box and having cross At one end,
the top 4 has a simple transverse groove .41. and at the other end a similar groove 42 having an undercut edge 43. At that end of the cover having the groove with the undercut edge is secured a wire bail 5 formed of a wire strand bent into a rectangular shape whereby to provide parallel members'51-52 one of which 51 seats against the outer edge of the adjacent box I end and has its ends fulcrumed in notches 53 cut in the ends of the opposite side pieces of the box, and is held to its seat 'by the upper cleat 2, nailed or clenched to'the said box end. The bail 5 is of such width that in swinging it up over the box top'or cover, its member 52 can be sprung into and interlocked with the under cut groove 42.
' Patented hpnLfhil 6 designates a swinging bail-also of rec tangular shape, one member of which seats against the outer upper end of the contiguous end of the box, the side boards at that end having notches 60 to receive the said bail member, which latter is secured to its seat by the upper box cleat 2 at that end.
The other member 61 of the said bail 6, is rockabiymounted in the. groove 41 in the box top and is securely held in the said groove by staples 62. I
By reason of the peculiar constructionand arrangement of the parts, as described,
the cover can be quickly raised by releasing the bail 5 and swinging it back, (see Fig 2) to release that end of the cover, and when thus released, the cover can be swung up OK the casing top and turned-to the vertical position, over the-end of the box to which it is secured. with its cross cleat cross cleat 3at that end of the box, the bail 6 now serving to sustain the said cover in its upright position and from accidental displacement from-that position.
In closing the box or casing, the cover is 46 resting on the lower swung down" and forwardly with its cross.
cleat 45 adjacent-the inner edge of that end sides having opposing notches- :bailsf formed; of
. the nn .7 1ght1y against the said end of the box.
" of the box that has the boil 5 and when thus closed b swinging the bail over to engage ercut groove, the said'bail locks itself in the said groove and by reason. of its spring; it draws the" cleat 45L of the'cover' Whatl claim 1st.
" said bails fitting the notches at their respective-ends ofthe box,reinforcing-cleats secured at'the ends of'thebox 'over the bailportions that pass over such ends, acover havlng a transverse groove In each end of the-toptherof, one of the grooves having an undercut'edge'whereby the free end of the ,bail at that end ofthe box can be sprung into and interlocked with the said undercut groove, the .bail'at the other end of the box ha ving its; free end rockably held in the groove in the cover at that end,-the said end ofthe box including a lower transverse cleat, and the cover of the box having a cleat on its under sideada'pted to rest upon the said lowertransverse box cleat when the said cover is swung to'itsfopenupright position over theend of the box;
