CHARLES O. L. GARDELL, F PEARL RIVER, NEW YORK,'ASSIGNOR TO DEXTER FOLDER COMPANY, OF EEARL RIVER, NEW YORK, A CORPORATION OF NEW YORK.
PAPEB.-FEEDI1\TG MACHINE.
To all whom it may concern:
. Be it known that I, CHARLES O. L. Gla- DELL, a citizen of the United States, and a resident of Pearl River, Rockland county, State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Paper-. Feeding Machines, of wh1oh the following is a specification.
, The present invention relates to improve ments in the typeof.paper feeding machines .knowir as-oontinuous feeders, in which inclined supply and feed tables are supported one above the other-with a curved throat or passageway communicating between them at their rear ends. With this type of feeder,
a continuous pile of sheets, supplied from time to time upon the supply. table, is fed by suitable mechanism through said curved throat to the feed table and presented in combed-out condition upon the feed table for the action of any suitable sheet feeding devices which conve the sheets singly to' the roa 1' ends of the supply and feed tables ings, and afterwardpoint so as to form the inner surface of the curved coinn'mnicatmg throat, and an automati (all y controlled pile clamping device mountcd to engage the rear surface of' the curved bank of sheets and clamp the bank of sheets against the feed drum or pulleys and move with the drum or pulleys-while thebank is "clamped against them to positively feed the bank of sheets through said throat. In order that the invention may be fully understood, I will first describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawout the novelty more particularly in the arinexed claims.
-In said drawings Figure 1 is a partial side elevation of a paper feeding machine having my improvements applied thereto, Fig. 2 18 a plan View of the same with the parts broken away, Fig. is an enlargeddetail vertical longitudinal sectional view of the main parts of the improved feeding mechanism, Fig. 4 is a detail sectional plan Specification of Letters IEatent. Application filed August so, 1911'. Serial No. 646,901.-

view of part of the same,'Fig. 5 is a detail plan view of a part of one of the main feedlng levers, Fig. 6 is a view similar to Fig. 3
showing the parts in shifte'd position, and
Fig. 7 is a detail side elevation of one of the U-shaped rocking levers which connect the main operating levers with the rocking frame.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 is a supply table mounted in inclined position upon suit-able side frames indicated at 2, and 3 is a feed table mounted directly beneath the supply table between the side frames 2. The supply table 1 is inclined downwardly toward its rear end, while the feed table 3 is inclined downwardly toward 1ts frontend.
5 1s a transverse shaft journaledat its "opposite ends in the side frames 2 and supporting within the side'frames a cylindrical feed druin o. The drum 6 may beiin tlie.
form of a plurality of feed wheelsgorjpullcys, although the drum formationis' 'pre The feed drum 6 is mounted bet'erred. tween the supply. table 1' and feed table 3 at their lower ends so asto form the inner I curved surface of the usual throat which connnunicates between said tables, the uppersurface of (11111116 being practically a. continuationof the surface of table 1, while the lowed-surface of drum 6 is supported sufliciently above thesurface of the feed table 3 'to allow. for the passage of a bank of sheets from the curved throat to the feed table 1 -Passing longitudinallyover the inclined supply table/1 are they heavyendless feed belts 10, which pass around the supporting pulley'lland driving pulley 12. The supporting pulley 11 is mounted upon a shaft 13 which is journaledin brackets 14 secured beneath the supply-table 1. The driving pulley 12 is mounted upon a shaft 15 journaled in brackets 16 also secured beneath the table 1. A tension and guiding pulley j 17 is mounted upon a transverse shaft 18 journaled in brackets 19 beneath the table 1. Keyed to the shaft 15 is a gear wheel 20 which meshes with an intermediate gear 21 j ournaled upon a bracket arm22 and driven by a large gear 23 secured to one end of the feeding" drum 6. Passing longitudinally over a portion of the lower feed table 3 is a series of heavy feeding belts 25 which are mgunted upon the supporting and driving 'naled in brackets secured beneath the table The belts 25 pass over the tension and guiding pulley 30 journaled in and supported by brackets 31. The shaft 29 has keyed to it a gear wheel 35 which is driven through the intern'iediate gears 36 and 87, the latter of which meshes with the large gear 23 upon the end of drum 6.
From the described mechanisnu it will be observed that the upper carrying portion of the belts 10 and 25 will have "feeding motion imparted to them wheneverthe drum 6 is rotated. Curved guides indicated at 40 are mounted at '40 upon the rear end of the feed table 3 and extend therefrom parallel with the surface of the-feed drum 6 to' a point above the rear end of the supply table 1. These curved guides 40 form with the feed drum 6, the curved throat which communicates between the supply table 1 and feed table 3.
Journaled upon the opposite ends of the shaft 5 are the upwardly presented rock arms 45 connected at their upper ends by a transverse bar 46 which forms with said rock arms a rocking frame. One of the rock arms 45 has journaled upon it at 50 a do or pawl 51 which rests in operative relation to a large ratchet wheel 52 secured to the end of drum 6 opposite to the large gear 23.
The transverse shaft 55 is mounted in, and extends between, the upright rock arms 45 journaled upon. the shaft 55 just outside of the rock arms 1-5 and along curved floatin operating levers 60 which are firmly joined together by a. transverse rod or bar 61 which carries two or more curved clamping plates 62 which are supported in operative relation to the outer surface of the curved portion of a feathered-(mt pile of sheets in its pass. ge from the supply table 1 to the feed table 3. The curved clamps 62 are designed to. engage the curved section of the pile of sheets adjacent'to the stationary curved guides 40 above referred to.
Each of the curved levers (S0 is formed at its upper end with a forwardly projecting 'foot 65 which. rests between the adjustable tappet screws 66 mounted respectively in the upper and an approximately U-shapcd rock arm or lever 70 which is journaled at 71 upon the transverse shaft 55 just inside of one of the upright rockarms45. The arms 70 and 70 extend forwardly and laterally from the. journal. bearing 71 so as to present tappet screwstltl in the same vertical plane as the foot 65. An adjustable stop screw 67 is threaded through a' lug 70 of rock arm to in position to engage the forward face of one ofthe rock arms 45 to limit the m vement. of rock arm 70 with relationton 4k arm 4.5.
The lower (ni of each of the floating levers (30 has piiotcd to it at 75 a pitman 76 formed at its forward end with a guide loop 77 operating over a cam-shaft 78 carrying an operating cam 79 which engages an antifriction roller 80 jo-urnalcd upon the looped end of pitman 76. A tension rod is pivoted to each floating lever 60 'at 86 and extended forwardly from said pivot through a guide bracket. 87 secured to the under face of the feed table 3. .An expansion spring 88 surrounds the rod 85 and is confined against the bracket 87 by an adjustable collar 89 secured upon the rod 85. Each of the connected floating levers 60 may be actuated'by a pitman 76 and tension rod 85 under the control of a cam 79, or if preferred, the operation can be effected by a single pitman and tension rod controlled by a single cam.
One of the pitmen 76 carries a block 90 formed with a stop notch 91 presented directly beneath a controlling dogfl2 pivoted at 93 to a bracket 94- secured to the under face of feed table 3. dog 92 with a rock arm 96 secured to a rock shaft 97 journalcd in bracket arm 98 extending upwardly from the feed table 3. The
cal longitudinal plane of the machine above the sheets upon the feed table 3. The inner end of rock shaft 97 carries a rock arm 96 thrust downwardly by a spring actuated tension rod 99 and carrying in its forward end an anti-friction roller 1 00 which is designed to operate 'upon the surface of the sheets passing forwardly over the feed table 3. When the quantity of sheets upon the feed table 3, at the gaging point of the mechanism just described. is sulliciently close to normal, the position of the rock arm 96" will hold the dog 92 in the path of the shoulder 91 so as to prevent the feeding.
A link connects the i operation of the mechanism above dcscril'icd.
As soon as the sheets pass forwardly from beneath roller 100 to a suflicient extent, the dog 92 will be raised out of the notch 91 to allow the resuma'tion of the feeding operation.
At I have shown more or less dia grammatically one of a plurality of sheet combing wheels which are designed to separate the sheets and feed them forwardly singly from the feed board 3 into convenlent position to we taken by the machine which 1s to operate upon the sheets.
I -operation, it will be understood that. ,theoperalor supplies the-necessary sheets in conibctbout position upon the supply feed table 3 to have become su'llicicnlly extable 1. sleuthing the supply of sheets upon' sageway.
ment of the combed-out blank of sheets, the dog 92 will have released the block 90 so that the cam 79 pulling forward upon the pitman 76 will first rock the levers upon shaft 55 to firmly clamp the curved section of the con'ibed-out bank of sheets between the clamps (32 and the surface of theslrum (i. The continued pulling of pitinan 76 acting through levers 60 will rock theeonnected rock arms 55 rearwardly causing dogs 51, throughratchet wheel 52, to rotate the drum (3 at: the same time that the curved clamps 62 move downwardlv so that the combed-out bank of sheets will be positively .moved through the throat leading from the supply table to the feed table. At the completion of the described feeding strol e,'the
