' LITE-BOAT RELEASE.
Specification of Letters Patent. Patented Mar. 25, 1913.-
Application filed August 31, 1911, Serial No. 647,073. Renewed February 6, 1913. Serial No. 746,670.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that. I, Josnrn N. Cox, a citizen of the United States, residing at Toledo, Lucas county, Ohio, have invented a new and useful Life-Boat Release, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to a trip device.
This invention has utility when embodied in a trip device for releasing life boats.
Referring to the drawings; Figure 1 is a perspective View of a life boat suspended from davits and having a pair of trip devices connected to constitute boat release mechanism; Fig.- 2 is an enlarged view of the trip device in side elevation, with parts broken away; Fig. 3 side elevation of the device showing connection to boat, and with parts bro-ken away to show tripping position of the elements; and Fig. 1 is a sectin on the line IV-IV, Fig. 3.
Each of the davits 1 is shown as provided with a block 2 connected by line'3 to lower block 4 having book 5 engaging link 6 extending to be heldby the trip device 7 which transmits its load through theclevis 8 to the eye 9 in the end of the boat 10. The device 7 is short connected between hook (land eye 9, readily adapting to present practice without having the boat swing too low. To allow ot' davits 1 is shown as provided with a block 2 proper distribution of the load between link 6 and clevis, 8, the device 7 is freely movable as a link therebetween, being guided by the links 11 mounted by clamps 12, to so swing over the side of the boat as to not interfere with freedom of boat suspension or otherwise cause trouble. The pins holding the links 11, as well as the pin for clevis 8, are held by keys 13 from working loose. The pin 14 mounts the rocking trigger 15 having the seat 16 normally approximating dead center as to pin 14, when engaging the link 6. This trigger 15, in its upper side has way 17 inclined out, so that pin 18 of the bolt 19 as it travels back positively rocks trigger 15 ,farther oft center. Thus as the locking bolt 19 is far enough back to permit of rocking of the seat 16 upward, this rocking is assisted by the .pin 18 upon way 17. I
The action of the load upon link 6 and through seat 16, is just enough ofi' center as to the pin 14 to hold the trigger 15 firmly against the locking bolt 19. The bolt 19 is normally held in locking position by the compression spring 20, shown as disposed in the recess in the bolt 19 and acting against the stop 21 mounted in the frame 7 of the device. Connected to the bolt 19 to 'withdraw it againstthe action of the sprin 20, is the line 22, extending over guide pu leys 23, 24, in the frame 7. This line is shown in the boat, and through guides 26 to be com tinuous from one device to the other, ,so that any grasping and drawing of the line 22 toward the center of the boat 10 will effect a simultaneous withdrawal of bolts 19 in block 7 at each end of the boat and thus insure level dropping of the boat into water even from midair. The links 11 hold the frames 7 alined so that there may be no accidental releasing of the triggers 15 by swinging of the frames 7. As these devices in practice must always be in working order, even though exposed toall atmospheric conditions,'the frame 7 is built up with packing 27 between the side plates and the central block portion thereof, which packing may be of paper or otlier substance such that when the frame is closely assembled by the bolts, water may 'not enter or work into from the top. The openings in the frame 7, are so disposed as not to harbor water or ice,
thus insuring a structure always in condias passing over guide pulleys 25,1nounted 1. A- trip device comprising a. rockable I seat provided with an inclined way and having its normal positionapproximate dead center and a reciprocable locking bolt having a pin coacting with said way to throw the seat off center.
2. A weatherproof trip device comprising a closed top housing, a tripable seat therein having its moving \bearings tected from the weather by said housing, said housing provided with an o eningprotected from the weather, and actuating means for the trip extending upwardly into the housing through said openin 3. A trip device comprising a closed top housing provided with a rockab le seat having its movingbea-rings protected from the weather by said housingand having its normal holding position approximate dead center, reeipi'ocabletripping means therefor yieldahle holding means for the bolt and having a member in the housing coaeting to flexible means connected to actuate the bolt. 10
positively rock the seat. In testimony whereof I aflix my signature 4. A trip deviee comprising a, housing in the presence of two witnesses. 5 provided with a rockable seat having its 1 JOSEPH N. COX.
