Description

0. M'. KING. BASE BALL GLOVE AND MITT. APPLICATION FILED JULY 19, 1912.
attozum UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
CHARLES M. KING, OF WASHINGTON, DISTRICT OF COLUMBIA, ASSIGNOR TO A. G. SPALDING & BROS, ACORPORATION OF NEW JERSEY.
BASE-BALL GLOVE AND MITT.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 25, 1913.
Application filed iTuly 19, 1912. Serial No. 710,342.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, CHARLES M. KING, a citizen of the United States, residing at lVashiugton, in the Districtof Columbia, have invented new and useful Improvements in Base-Ball Gloves and Mitts, of which the following is a specification.
Myinvention relates to base ball gloves or mitts.
The object of my invention is to produce a base ball glove or mitt in which the palm portion is constructed to present a more adherent surface in catching a base ball.
A further object of my invention is to produce a base ball glove or mitt having a multiplicity of indentations or small pockets in the face of the palm portion adapted to render same less slippery.
Another object thereof is to produce a glove or mitt of said character in which the face ofthe palm portion is provided with a plurality of perforations or transverse slots and a reinforcing layer beneath same by which a base ball is retained and prevented from slipping from the grasp, and'a still further object of my invention is to provide a more simple, cheap and efficient article of said class than has heretofore been produced.
To these ends, my invention includes the combinations and arrangement of component parts to be hereinafter described and more particularly pointed out in the claim.
In the accompanying drawings, in which like reference characters indicate similar parts, Figure 1 is a perspective View of a base ball mitt of my invention; Fig. 2 is a longitudinal sectional View of the same taken on the line 1--l of Fig. l, and Fig. 3 is a perspective View of a modified form of my invention.
Referring to said drawings, 1 indicates the front or palm portion of a base ball mitt, and 2 designates the back portion thereof which portions are preferably of flexible leather and may be laced together around their edges as shown.
Suitable padding 3 is secured between the front and back portions to cushion the hand, and the back is provided with a glove piece 4: by which the glove is secured upon the hand of the wearer.
For the purpose of rendering the palm portion 1 of the mitt more adherent and to prevent base balls caught therein from slipping from the grasp, the face of the palm portion is provided with a multiplicity of perforations 5 and upon the under face thereof is secured a thickness or strip of flexible material as a reinforcing backing for the perforated face which forms the closure for said perforations. The backing 6 may be secured upon the face portion by adhesive cement or by stitches 7 or by both.
In the modified forn'i of my invention shown in Fig. 3 of the drawings, transverse slots 8 are provided in the face of the palm portion 1 instead of the perforations as above described.
It will be appreciated that my invention may be applied to both fingerless mitts and to finger gloves with equal value.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to be secured by Letters Patent, is-
A base ball mitt or glove, comprising flexible palm and back portions and suitable padding, the palm portion being provided with a plurality of perforations, and a reinforcing layer of flexible material secured upon the back of said palm portion, substantially as described.
CHARLES M. KING.
