HEATER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 25, 1 913.
Application filed August 24, 1912. Serial No. 716,907.
To all whom, 'it may concern Be it known that I, JoHN S. l'nn'noins'r, a Vcitizen ot the United States, ot' the city of Lincoln, county ot' Lancaster, and State of Nebraska, have invented certain new7 and useful Improvements in Heaters, and have described the same in the following specification, illustrated by the accompanying drawings.
My invention relates to that class of heaters which are applicable to stoves, boilers, 'furnaces and the like, have two or more separate burners, and are adapted to use liquid fuel, or both solid and liquid fuels simultaneously, and to consume their own smoke.
lt is the object of the invention to sim! plify and improvetlie construction, to make sure the normal operation, to intensity the heat, and in general to increase the efciency, of heaters ot' this class. To accom-1 plish this object, I incorporate in my ini-g proved heater two combustion chambers, one above ythe other. a transverse diaphragm,`
or deck, between these chambers` a vertical pi e /connect-ing the chambers througi a, ho
.co-axially in a cylindrical hot-air furnace.
Fig the line of Fig. 1.
This illustrative heater, which is made wholly of castiron, comprises the hollow eylindrical irehoX 1. having near the top a plurality ot inwardly projecting nibs Q, and having at the bottom the grate 3 on which coal may be burned. The otherwise open top of this irebox is occupied bythe deck 1. which is a concavo-convex annular battleplate, diaphragm or cover..supported by the nibs Q in a. general horizontal position between the upper and the lower combustion chambers 5 and t3. This dome-shaped deck has an annular flange 7, co-axially encircling the central deck-opening. or hole, 8,
U. 2 is a partial horizontal section on Vand upstanding uniformly to somewhat.
higher leve-l than the inner and upper circular margin of that apical perforation. This flange forms the outer wall. while the inner margin of the deck forms the bottom and inner wall, of the intermediate horizontal annular. ,hanneh liquid-fuel receptacle and burner S). The deck has also a sliding door l0, whereby coal may be introduced to the grate 3. ln the middle of the lirebox, and loosely7 Iitted into the hole S. the vertical heat-pipe 11, having at the top a 'number of radially projecting teeth l2, is suspended thereby from the deck l. This pipe has at the bottom the encircling and upturned flange 13, forming therewith the annular horizontal fuel reeeptacl:` and burner denoted by the same numeral 13. 'This is located directly under the fuel receptacle and burner 9 and in a position to receive through the hole 8 the overflow therefrom.
Standing on the 4convex top of the deck l, and contiguously encircling the llange 7, is the outer burner cylinder :14, perfo 'ated with numerous small holes 15 for the pasot gases; While the inner burner cylin der, 1G, similanto cylinder 14; and similarly perforated, but smaller and .a little tfaller, and separated therefrom by the annular chamber 17, stands upright inthe fuel re ceptacle 2'). Across the top of the burner cylinder 16 and over the.1 top of the burner cylinderI 14, rests the circular battle-plate 1S, in the top of the upper combustion chamber` Down through the middle of this plate is inserted the supply pipe ot air or steam, 19, having a flaring nozzle 20, whose numerous discharge orifices 21 are directed angularly upward and outward toward the' encircling burner cylinders 14 and 16. The supply pipe 22, which enters the chamber 1T through a hole in the cylinder 14, discharges liquid fuel into the annular burner 9; while the chimney pipe 24 ultimately carries the gaseous products ot' the combustion outI from within the furnace or 'furnace casing Q3.
ln the operation of theinvention, the
lower burner l?) is supplied with liquid fuelA vao dition of air or steam, as'niay be desired, from the pipe 19 and nozzle 20. The augmented mixture seeks to escape from the inner cylinder 16 through the holes 15. At the saine time liquid fuel supplied to the burner 9 and heated therein from the lirebox below, is rapidly volatilized in the chainber 17. There it commingles with the niiX- ture just mentioned, already hot, entering that chamberin Iiets through the holes 15 of, cylinder 1G. In that chamber, as well as at all the holes 15 and in the space between the cylinder 14. and the bathe-plate 18, the entire resulting mixture and the uniningled vapor, if any, from the fuel in the burner 9, burn furiously and completely, producing intense heat without smoke. m
claim as my invention* 1,1. A heater of t-lie specified class, comy pi'ising two combustion chambers, one above the other, an annular deck, common to'bot-h chaiiibei's and forming between them a partition having a hole or' intercoininunication from chamber to cli-amber, an upstanding Harige formed integrally on the A top'oi the deck and forming with the inner margin of t-he deck an annular burner encircling the hole, an open pipe dependent from the margin of the hole, and an annular burner integrally formed around the end of the pipe in the low-er chamber.
2. A heater of the specified class, coinprising two combustion chambers, one/over the other, a transverse deck, co-innio-n to both chambers and forming between them a partitionhaving an inter-communicating hole, an upstanding tlangeforining part of the deck and forming with the inner margin of the deck an annular burner encircling the" hole, an open vertical pipe connecting t-he chambers through the hole and having periplieral teeth to engage the margin ofthe hole, anda burner formed upon the free endl of the pipe in the lower chamber.
3. A heater ot' the speciied class, coniy prising two combustion chainbers, one over the other, a deck, common to both chambers and forming between them a partition having an int'ercoinmunicating hole, an upstanding annular flange forming part of the deck and forming with the inner margin of the deck an annular burner encircling the hole',
a vertical heat pipe dependent from the 'i margin of thehole, a burner formed on the free end of thepipe in the lower chamber, a perforated cylindrical wall stand iig in the annular burner, and a batltleplate upon `the perforated wall.
4. heater of Athe specied class, com prising two combustion chambers, one oiter the other, a deck, common to both chambers and forming between them a partition having 'a central hole, a Harige formed on the top oi the deckand forming with the inner margin of the deck an annular burner encircling tlie hole, a vertical pipe, open from end to end and of the hole, a burner loriiied around the pipe in the lower chamber, two perforated cylindrical'walls, coaxial with the hole, standing ne within the `other battle-plate upon the inner perforatedwall.
A heater of the specilied class, coinpi'ising two combustion chambers, one over the other, a transverse deck, common to hoth chambers and forming between the chambers 'a partition having a central hole, an
,annular channel formed in the top of the deck and encircling the hole, an open cylindrical pipe, dependent from the margin of the hole, coaxial with the hole, the other onthe deck, the top o1 the walls.
6. A heaterof the speciied class, coinaiid a baille-plate at prisi'ng two combustion chanibers, one over-1v the other, an annular coneavoconvex deck, common to bothl chambers and formlng between them a partition having a central apical hole, an opstandingv annular flange .formed on the deck and forming with ,thev
inner margin .of the deck an annular burner encircling the hole, a vertical pipe, 'open frontend to end, and dependent romthe margin of the holeinto the lower chamher, and an annular' formed around the lower end of the pipe.
In testimony whereof I hereto subscribe my naine in the presence of two Witnesses.
