Letters Patent No. 105,676, rdated July 26, 1870.
I IMPROVED SGI-.1:0Oli-SEAT.y
The Schedule referred toIin. these Letters Patent and making part of thefsame.
To whom tt may concern.-` v
Be -it known that we, CHARLES G. HARINGTON `and DAVID MILLS, of"Northville, in the county of Wayne and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement inSchool-Seats; and we do` declare that the following is a true and accurate description thereof, reference being had to the accompanyingrdrawing and Ytothe letters of reference marked thereon, and being apart of this specification, in
' Figure l is an elevation of the inner side of one of e tllie end frames of aseat and desk, with seatarin in p ace. I I I Figure 2-isa `section of the frame with the seatarin removed, showing the box in which the axle of the seat-arm actuates, and the slot, by ineans ofl which said seat-arm is adjusted. AFigure 3 is a plan ofa section of the .seat-arm,
t 4showing the axleA thereof, and `a curved slot, which forms-a stop.
Figure 4 is a section on the line :c :c in figs. 1 and 2, showing the slot, thimble,`bolt, rubber stop,Inut, and stop.
i Figure 5 is'a section showing the manner in which the `top of the desk is secured to the frame. l
t Like letters indicate like parts in each figure.
The nature of this invention relates to the construction of school-seats and desks, so that the seat may be adjusted vertically, and that it will be noiseless in operation; `and f It consist-s in a new and ingenious arrangement of I the various parts, the whole forming a neat, strong,
durable, adjustable, and noiseless in operation, seat and desk for the purposes designed.
. In the accompanying drawing` A represents one of the end frames employed in the construction of our seat, which'frame may he ornamented as desired. t -B represents a seat-arm, to which is secured, in any suitable manner,- any desired seat. I
'lhis arm is provided with au axis, a, which actuates in the seat b, castforthat purpose in the side of the seatframe,.and is secured bythe bolt c.
G is a groove, made by au upper and lower flange,
forms the platform or top of the desk. y
A hole, d,is bored'into the board from the edge, into which is inserted-aproper nut, h, which engages with a screw-bolt, 7c, which passes througlrsuitable holes i in the frame, and by means of which the top is rmly secured to the frame. n
`E is a slot, cast in and through the seat-frame, through which passes the thmble l, which is provided with a shoulder, m. I
Through this thimble, from theoutside of the flame,
a nut, n.
Between the shoulder m of the thimble and the side of the frame, and sleeved upon -said thimble, is placed a thick elastic washer` or buffer, H.
K is a circular slot, cast in the rear end of the seatarm, and, engages with the elastic washer or buffer H in such a manner that, when the seat is thrown down,
eration by impingingagainst said elastic washer.-
Should it be desired to alter the-inclination of the seat, to suit the various heights of scholars, itmay be done by loosening the nut n, raising or loweriugtthe bolt F and thimblel in the slot E, and then tightening the nut again.
forms the back of the seat-is nearly vertical to the tothe form of the sitter.
What we claim as our invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
ingA of the frames A, the arm B, the board D, the bolt' F, and the washer H, when the several parts are constructed, arranged, and secured together as described and shown, as and for the purposes set forth.

` e e, cast on the upper end of the seatfraine, and which t is designed to receive the end of the board D, which passes the bolt F, the inner end of which engages with as in. fig. 1, it will act as a stop and be noiseless in op- I It will be noticed that the front of the flame which I v point p, from 'which point it inclines backward, for the. purpose of accommodating the shape off'the seat-back The school-seat above described and shown, consist-
