To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that-I, Armani) FonNANnnn, a subject of the King of Sweden, residing in the borough of Manhattan, in the city, county, and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Locking Devices for Telephones, of which the "following is a specification.

This invention relates to telephones, and particularly to means to lock the telephone to prevent the unauthorized use thereof, and it is the object of the invention to provide a device of this charactefwhich is cheap in construction, readily applicable to and removable from all telepho apparatus, and ctlicient in operation.

\Vith this object in view, 1 provide alocking device to be applied to the transmittersupporting column of the ordinary telephone otally connected or hinged members having semi-circular portions to conform to and engage around the column with parallel arms -projecting from such portions, one of the arms having a hook to engage with the receiver-supporting lever to maintain it in its lower position; one of the arms been key manipulable lock fixed thereto, the bolt of which cooperates with a flange or lip on the other arm to rcleasably maintain the device in operative position on the column.

In the drawing accompanying and forming a part of this specification, Figure 'l is a perspective View of a telephone apparatus with an embodiment of my invention applied thereto. Fig. 9 is a. pers'pective'view of my. improved device, illustrating the same in its opened position; and Fig. 3 is a plan view, partly broken away to illustrate the manner of locking the members together.

In the embodiment of my invention illustrated in the drawing, I have shown the same applied to the ordinary desk set telephone apparatus, comprising a supporting standard or column 4: for the transmitter 5, a receiver-support-ing hook or lever switch (3 projecting through a slot 7 in the column and pivotally supported therein, the slot being of such length as to permit of the raising of the lever in order to make the necessary electrical connection to use the*tclephone. The leverlias the usual tines-8 in apparatus, comprising a pair 'of piv-- which the receiver 18 is supported and having the usual openings 9 and normally maintained in its lower or disconnected position by the weight of the receiver, said lever being raised by the usual spring when the receiver is removed to make the necessary electrical connection.

My improved device relates to means to lock the lever 6 in its lower position and thereby preventing the making of the neces sary electrical connection to use the telephone, and comprises a pair of members 10, ll, pivotally connected or hinged together, as atlQ, the members 10 and 11 being constructed to conform to and adapted to engage around the column 5, as clearly shown in Fig. 1. One of the members, as 10, has a projecting arm 13 to extend parallel with and below the receiver lever 6 and has a laterally projecting hook it at the upper forward edge which is adapted to engage over 'tlfe lever. in the present instancev engagingin an opening in a lever tine 8. Also fixed to the inner taco of the arm 13 is a lock 15 having a spring bolt 16 and operable by a removable key 17. The other member 11 also has an arm 15) to project forward parallel with the arm 13 having flanges 20, 21 at its upper and lower edges to inclose the top and bottom of the lock. The forward end is bent up to form a flange with a lip 22 to inclosc the front. of the lock and in back of the lip of which the bolt 16 engages to lockthe members 10 and l'1 togcthcr. These flanges 20, 21 and when the device is in position on the column 4 preventing any tampering with the look.

When it is desired to place the device in position on the column to lock the telephone apparatus against use. the hook H is placed in. an opening in the lever and the members l0, l1 placed around the column 4. a slight pressure on the arms 1?), 12) causing the spring bolt. to engage in back of the lip 22 locking the device in position on tho column, the hook l-t preventing any upward movementof the lever 6. To remove the device it isonly necessary to insert the key into the lock and release the lock bolt when the arm 19 will be freed to swing on its hinge 12 and'the hook 1% is lifted out of the opening 9.

It will be noted thatthe members, engaging around the column are so constructed as by the connection. of the transinitter to the column preventing an upward movement of the device on the column.
