FRANK COLBATH, OF DALLAS, TEXAS, ASSIGNOR OF ONE-HALF TO GEORGE KETTLE, OF
' DALLAS, TEXAS.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK COLBATH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Dallas, in the county of Dallas and State of Texas, have invented new and useful Im-- provements vin Reflectors for Spirit-Levels, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to reflectors for spirit levels, and has for an object to provide a level which may be engaged with and securely supported upon the stock of the level at a point above the bubble tubes or at one side thereof so that the position of the bubble can be clearly seen by the operator who may be standing above or below the level, thus obviating the necessity of climbing to a point in order to properly view the bubble.
Other objects of the invention are to provide a reflector arid companion bubble tubes and a support for the tubes and for the reflector and constructed with a view opening whereby one-of the tubes can be readily viewed from above while the companion tube can be viewed from below. a
In the drawing, forming a port-ion of this specification'and in which like numerals of reference indicate similar parts in the several views Figure 1 is a side view of a spirit level showing my improved reflector applied, thereto. Fig. 2 is an edge view of the level. Fig. 3 is an inverted perspective view of the reflector and the support'therefor. Fig. 4 is a section on line 4-4 of Fig.
1. Fig. 5 is a perspective view of the reflector for the transverse bubble tube. 6 is a transverse section through the level showing a slightly modified form of the invention.
The stock 1 herein shown may be of anysuitable well known construction but is provided with a single longitudinal mortise 2 in which the companion parallel bubble tubes 3 and 4 are disposed. In the preferred embodiment of the invention the tubes are supported in the ears 5 which extendinwardly from the supporting plate 6. The tubes 3 and 4 are disposed at different heights with respect to the su porting plane 6, and as illustrated, the tu 3 which is disposed nearest the plane is located beneath the view opening 7 therein whereby the air bubble in the tube 3 can be viewed when the user of the level is looking downwardl' upon the same. inwardly and is constructed to provide a supporting flange or element 8 which is located opposite a similar flange or element 9 on the plate 6. A mirror or surface 10 having a mirrored surface is disposed beneath the plate (3 and held thereto through its engagement with the elements 8 and 9, as shown. This surface is disposed at one side or above the tube 4 so that the bubble in the tube will be reflected upon the mirrored surface to be seen by the user of the level when the latter is positioned at a height above the head of the user. Adjacent to the mortise in the stock of the level the walls of the stock member 6 may be secured in any suitable well known manner to the stock 1 but I preferably employ such fastenings as the screws shown at 12.
The foregoing description fully sets forth the construction of means to be used longit-udinally upon the level and for indicating the position of the bubbles when the level is disposed above or below the user and when the level is used horizontally. The stock is provided with the usual transversely disposed bubble tube 13, the bubble of which may be seen when the level is placed vertically. This tube is mounted in the sight opening 14 in the stock, and as illustrated, the walls of the sight opening at a point above the tube are formed to provide guide rooves 15. A mirror 16 which is mounted 1n a suitable protecting casing 17 is slidably fitted in the grooves 15 and pushed therein so that the bubble in the tube will be reflected in the mirror to be seen when the tube is disposed above or below the head of the' user,
I cla m: The combination in a spirit level, of a bubble tube support comprising a plate provided with a su porting flange, a portion of the other of s aidtubes being disposed be- In testimony whereof I afiix my signature neath a portion of s'aid plate and a1; one side in presence of two witnesses.
