To all whom t may concern Be it known that I, HERMAN BECKER, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Marietta, in the county 0f Washington and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Rules, of which the following is a specication, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to rules, and more particularly to that type of folding rule commonly styled a pocket rule The objects of my invention are to provide a rule that can be easily used in connection with a pencil as a compass, and to furnish the rule with a glass cutter.
Other objects of my invention are to provide a rule with an adjustable pencil holder or guide, and to provide a rule of the above type that is simple in construction, durable, inexpensive to manufacture and highly eilicient for the purposes for which it is intended.
I attain the above objects by a mechanical construction that will be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.
In the drawing z-Figure 1 is aside elevation of a portion of a rule in accordance with this invention. Fig. 2 is al similar view of another portion of a rule. Fig. 8 is a similar view of the rule folded. Fig. 4 is an end view of the folded rule. Fig. 5 is an end view of one of the sections of the rule. Fig. 6 is an enlarged plan of a pencil guide. Fig. 7 is a side elevation of the same, and Fig. 8 is an end view of the same.
A rule in accordance with this invention comprises end sections 1 and 2 and intermediate sections 3 and 4. The sections 1 and 3 and 4 and 2 are hinged together in the ordinary manner, as at 5 and the sections 3 and 4 have countersunk hinged members 6 and 7, the latter having a recess 8 in which is revolubly mounted by a transverse pin 9 a glass cutter wheel 10, the periphery of said wheel protruding from the member 7 whereby when the rule is folded the rule will serve functionally as a handle when using the wheel 10 for cutting glass.
The outer end of the section 1 is provided with a recess 11 and pivotally mounted in said recess by a transverse pin 12 is a link 13 having the end thereof provided with an opening 14. The pin, nail or other device can be placed in the opening 14 for holding the end of a rule upon a center while it is swung around the center.
Detachably connected to one of the sections of the rule and adapted to be adjusted upon either section is a U-shaped clamping member 15 having one of the arms 16 thereof provided with lateral extensions 17 having the ends thereof provided with openings 18. The arm 16 has a set screw 19, whereby the member 15 can be easily clamped upon one of the sections of the rule. The extensions 17 serve functionally as pencil guides or holders whereby the link 13 is anchored, the rule can be swung around whereby the pencil point in one of the openings 18 will describe a circle.
From the foregoing it will be observed that I have devised an improvement in connection with a pocket rule that will facilitate the work of carpenters and glaziers, and while in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, it is to be understood that the structural elements thereof are susceptible to such changes as fall within the scope of the appended claim.
Vhat I claim is In combination a foldable implement having a central hinge, said hinge having a recess exposed when the implement is closed, and a cutting wheel mounted in and projecting from said recess, said wheel being pivotally mounted in the hinge independent of the hinge pivot, one of the impl-ement mem` bers having a recess to receive the projecting portion of the wheel when the implement is open.
