MACHINE FOR APPLYI'NG CAPs To BOTTLES.
To all 'whom t may concern: l'
Be it. known that I, FREDERICK RECHT, a
. for Applying Caps to Bottles,A of which the i: Afollowing is a specification.
This invention is intended particularly for the application 'to t-hemou'tzhs of bott-lcs of metallic sealing caps which are provided with a coijnpre-ssible or elastic sealing medium, as disks of cork` and means for locking the caps to the hotties. Such caps can, I
find', be most satisfactorily applied by means of a capping-head containing. a -chuck constructed to receive the caps and t.ln ough which pressure is applied in the direction of the bottle-axis by relative movement. of the capping-head and the means hy which the bottle is held during theclosire. Such a chuck is set forth` in Letters Patent of the United States granted to me July 2T,
1909, No. 929.248. The requisite axial pressure is considerable, `and as the power expendedv is proportionate .to the distance through which the.Y moving parts fare 11i:- quired to tra-vel while the pressure is sus; tained. it is desirable that such movement he reduced as much as possible by proper zuliustment. CloseA positive adjustment to reduce such movement has not been possible in bottle-cappingr machines as they have heretofore heen constructed owing to variations in the heights of bottles. But in such machines the bottles have been supported by their bases during the capping operation. B v my present invention the hotties are suspended by means engaging with the necks of the. bottles, and this meai'is is constructed in proper adjustment with the cap ping: mechanism. This is possihlesince that portion ot thevhottle between its neck and the lips against. .which sealing contactv 'is made consists ordinarily of. a double head which is molded and is quite uniform, whereas the body of the bottle is subject to variations which it has notI heen found possible to eliminate in manufacture.
A further object. of t-hc invention is to relieve the body of the bottle. 'from the strains imposed in capping. and thereby eliminate the danger of breakage or weakening of the bottles thereby.
Further objects are to produce a capping- Specification of Letters Patent. Application med Augst its, isos. serial No. 512,956.

machine of simple construction, adapted for continuous ruiming, having a large output, and which will cap, Without read'iustment, bottles which vary greatly in l'ieight. and ca acity.
ings which form a part of this application- Figurel is side elevation with parts at lthe side Where ,the closing is effected in vertical section, showing a capping machine embodying my invention. Fig. 2 is a'pla'n view of the same with parts broken away.
The framework of the machine comprises an axial column 1 and a second column 2 adjoining the side where the sealing.r is effected. These columns may be comparatively short and may have their bases supported on a table since no mechanism is 'required below t-he level at. which the bottles from the machine. The axial column car; ries a rotary member 4t with a rim which carries a serieslof guides 5, 5, which are tn hes parallel with and-equidistan't from the axis of lthe rotary member. These carry capping-heads 6, 6. The Capping headsl have Vcap ing-chucks, Y, set intheir lower ends. Tie capping-headscarr'y below .the
.and carry them to the positionirhere they are closed u pon the bottles. The guards have holes in them through which the caps willpass readily wlienreduced in'diamet'er hy the operation of capping topermit their withdrawal with the hot-ties. The cappingheads havev a short vertical movement and are normally heldat -the upper limit-s of their movements by springs 9, 9. i
A fiat ring- 10 is bolted to projections ex- 'tending from the lower side of the rim of the rotary member and is carried hy and forms a part of the rotary' member. The ring has holes opposite the capping-.heads through which the bottle-necks can be passed and the hottle-lips presented to the action of the .rapping-heads. A pair of jaws` one ofiwhich l1 is made fast. to the flat ring. and the other of which 12 is movable. is located over cach of thehoies and serves as a bottle-suspending means for en` `raging the necks of bottles. The jaws are drawn together by springs 13, 13. These springs permit the' jaws to be pushed apart by the act of inserting a bottle and snap together under the bea-ds `which surround tt\e neck at the mouth. At the position are convenient-ly brought "to Vand removed chucks guards 8, 8, which' support the capsA n the accompanying two sheets of draw- I released.
where the caps' are closed un the bottle the movableI jaws come opposite a roller 14 carried one-of the columns of the machine which locks thejaws. On lea-ving the side where the closing is effected the movable Ajaw is pushed away from'the fixed ja'w by o n the column and the bottle is Therotary member carries a` bevel gear 16 by which it is driven in the direction indicated byan arrow.- This gear isvengaged by 'api'nion 17.0na'shaft 18 through which vpower is applied'to the'machine and which 1s' carriedby bearing'slf) ,and 20 on the tops of the:columns. The' capping heads are def pressed towardthe bottle-suspending means to' eectl thef-sealinget the' side where the closigfisl-'efected by being broughtv under -a cam 21 which is conveniently -a roller mounted VVon the driving shaft. Rollers Z2 23'larri'ed by the two A.columns support the' fiatI ring and the bottle-suspendingmeans on Ctherside where.l the closing 'is effected.
What I claim as new, andi-desire to secure by Letters Patent of the United States7 1.
